Yes, because the situation in 18602 and 1942, when the very survival of the United States was at stake, is so very similar to the 'war' we are in now with a rag tag bunch of criminal religious fanatics.

Not to mention - social acceptance of what's necessary and proper shift. We don't judge ourselves against the Romans when we evaluate our torture methods.

I'm much more concerned by his Nixon-esque assertion that if the President does it to protect the country, it's not illegal.

I can't believe this power crazed asshole has been our VP for 8 years.

Umm...some of the people in this country do. Actually, by the lack of outrage over this whole issue, a lot of people do.

That's 'cuz all of Bush's abuses of civil rights happened during peacetime.

/Show me a declaration of war and I might change my mind...

Thrag 2008-12-21 03:31:26 PM
Funny, I don't recall Lincoln giving orders to illegally torture people. Lincoln did legally suspend habeas corpus, but that does not compare to illegally having people tortured, or illegally suspending habeas corpus, illegally violating the fourth amendment with warrantless wiretaps, etc.

Cheney needs to be reminded that there has been no official declaration of war on anyone. You can't say "in a time of war" as your legal argument when according to the letter of the law we are not in a time of war.

Everything you or I have done on the internet in the last few years has been spied on without a warrant by the government.

If you are accused of being a "terrorist" all the protections of our legal system are stripped from you, simply on the accusation. Our entire system of civil liberties surrounding search and trials as outlined in the bill of rights does not apply if the government simply decides they don't apply. You can be arrested, not charged with a crime, hidden away with no access to a lawyer, tortured, and never see trial, all at the whim of government.

But don't worry, that government that the right wing thinks can't be trusted with anything at all, can in fact be trusted to only kidnap and torture bad people.

I just love the right wing cognitive dissonance. The government can't be trusted with our tax dollars, but they can be trusted to not abuse absolute unchecked police powers. Wheeeee!

massive warrant less eavesdropping on American citizens by the NSA, in violation of the FISA act of 1978, from 2002 until early 2008, when it was made "legal" by presidential order. originally authorized by the Prez in secret, organized by Cheney.

/waves hi to the NSA search bots.

Hey, I'm white, male, and rural. You think Bush would take any of my civil rights away, even if I advocate his impeachment?

Just 'cuz your white-collar suburban subdivision hasn't been raided by the CIA on bogus charges doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

I don't care if my rights have been abused. The government putting themselves in a position of power to deny anyone their Constitutionally guaranteed rights or civil liberties is enough to call foul.

Don't excuse these coonts. They work for us. Remember?

"War time" doesn't count when we're the ones who initiate it.

Unless, of course, you think that 9/11 was a declaration of war. Which is a stupid thing to think.

No one is forgetting 9/11. Its usefulness in acting as leverage to usurp the Constitution has expired.

Warrantless wiretaps anf Gitmo have been great tools in catching Bin Laden, haven't they?

Yes, well, indeed, Mr. Cheney. No doubt. Thing is though, history tends to be a lot more forgiving to those who actually obtain good results.

doyner: Warrantless wiretaps

You get my full support on warrantless wiretaps, they are BS. Not on Gitmo though.

We have not been attacked since, while other countries have seen plenty of terror.

I think you will find Obama does not abolish Gitmo like he said he would, now that he is in the know about it. No one really have a good idea what to do with the animals in that cage.

Prosecute them. If they are found not guilty, release them back to their home countries. If they don't want them, drop them off in Afghanistan. If they rejoin terrorist forces, kill them.

Pretty simple, really.
