"It would be a sad, sad day" if Mr. Obama scrapped the bowling lane, says Jim Sturm, president of the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America and owner of two bowling centers in Charleston, W.Va. "I think his political analysts ought to take a long look at removing [it]. It could have a long-term impact on his political prospects."

Aha. Haha. Hahahahahaha...

That's so pathetic it's cute.

If that projection is accurate, it doesn't look big (not enough ceiling space) enough for a basketball court.

Really? Are the bowling demographic and accompanying "bowling lobbyists" groups really that powerful and influential?

Back home, bowling was fun, but something usually best done when drunk. Somehow, I don't think it's the type of activity that will make or break a political career.

I'm tired of Obama wanting to rip historic value out of the White House. First, it's the bowling alley. Next thing you know, he'll want to install "electric lighting" and "remove asbestos" because it's somehow more "modern." It's like fishing on the USS Sequoia isn't good enough for him.

59 million people out of 300 million (or out of approximately 185 million registered voters) isn't "pretty much half". I know you BushBots aren't very good with math, or anything else that requires actual thought.

I hope he puts solar panels back on the White House roof. It was a real asshole move by that Reagan crook after Jim Carter had put them up there and then Reagan tore them off. Looks like Carter may have the last laugh after all.

Not everyone is excited about basketball's arrival as the semiofficial sport of the White House. The bowling lobby is concerned that talk of removing the White House lane -- which was built under the north driveway -- will have a negative impact on their sport. In an effort to change the president's mind, top bowling associations have offered to refurbish the lane with a state-of-the-art scoring system, high-tech bowling balls designed to grip the lane and a digital surround-sound system.

I hope Obama doesn't give in to Big Bowling.

Not just believable - true.

You can be a ranked bowler in the USBC if you're blind, in a wheelchair, and so on. It's the only sport that's co-ed AND open to the handicap. With the addition of PBA-Experience leagues (I'm in the only one in the eastern half of New England, you also can bowl on the same lane conditioning as the pros do.

At the K-12 level, it's the only co-ed sport where everyone on the team plays. No benching, etc. Because the teams are small (3-5 people on a team), you have to work with everyone's skill set.

To REALLY get good at it, you have to understand a fair amount of math and physics - at least conceptually.

BTW the cross-section for a 7-10 split is 0.02"... at 60 feet,
that's an angle of only 5.7 arcseconds. That's the diffraction limit of 1.25-inch telescope.

No - I never got a 7-10 - only at this for 6 years...

PBA average: 170 (that's about 190 on a normal bowling house pattern). I still have "release issues"... :-) but I'm working on them.

What you're saying is a bit misleading as well. Might a person assume from your statement then that 241 million out of 300 million did? 126 million out of 185 million registered voters?

Please, put away the smugness; you know what Scott Thrust was getting at. Even with a solid electoral win, Obama still only pulled in a little more than half of the popular vote. Historically, the percentage margin between these two candidates is not unusual (17 presidential elections had bigger electoral tallies for the winning candidate, and 4 percent at the polls is also relatively small). Yet, as Scott says, you would think that Barack Obama were the second coming of Christ considering the way some people are acting.

True, the ironic part is that people like you and scott are the one's perpetuating it more than anyone else.

Weird, almost as if you're trying to manufacture something to be mad about...

Why is it OK for Nixon to install a bowling alley without outrage? I'd bet all that equipment is expensive to maintain and run.

As a Republican, I find your remarks representative of the asshattery that got us kicked out of office. When I read tripe like this, I realize that we have sewn the seeds of our own failure.

Obama is the President-elect. When he moves into the White House, he can do whatever the hell he wants with it. More power to him for turning it into something more interesting than a bowling alley.

I have to agree. Especially since they almost never allow you to pull a .45 to pick off that last remaining pin.

I mean, really. Wasn't Nixon the last president to use the bowling alley? Or at least the last president who had ever bowled -- as an adult -- before reaching the White House?

Personally, I would favor replacing it with FDR's swimming pool. Not everyone can shoot a basketball, but anyone can swim. Or should be able to. Excellent exercise.
