"Christ also was censored for having said 'love thy neighbour as you love yourself'," said Kulik, 47, in an interview. "They took his life away. In my case, they took only my photos."

There is, I think, a fundamental difference between someone who saying "Love thy neighbour" and someone trying to gnaw your ankles off. It's subtle, I know, but it's a difference all the same.

Dear FSM, what a loony. He should live in America where people like him can get elected to high office pretending to be something they are not.

"America, meanwhile, will never forget I Bite America, America Bites Me... "

I'm American, and even though the author just reminded me, I still have no recollection of it. If I did, I'd be ashamed of myself.

I also came in to say the nut trifecta is in play.

Then I shall promptly leave before someone posts a furry picture.

Let's not get too hasty with that "fully-functioning" thing.

TheCrimsonKing 2008-12-21 09:42:58 AM
Performance art sucks! Performance "artists" are a bunch of no talent hacks who ruin art for everyone else involved. I am an artist. I spend more time painting every week than most people spend at their day jobs. It is my job! It's what I do! It's the action that most defines me! Then some retard with a camera gets a quirky idea, gets in the media and ruins it for the rest of us. Non-artists see this kind of sensationalistic crap and instantly assume that we're all this useless, trying to 'pull the wool' over the eyes of the public; get something for nothing. What a 'tard. I'm going to get a crucifix, stuff it up my backside, take a picture of it and hang it in a gallery. Maybe then I'll get some media coverage too!

'Fully functional' is a relative term.

/I vote for the neuter thing

What does he mean "till" something thinks he's a nut. Doesn't he get that he's well past that day?

...a "great intellectual" whose art was rooted in the downfall of communism.

Because nothing says intelligentsia like a naked man pretending he's a dog, comparing himself to Christ.

Awesome. From my favorite game too.

Performance art is what you do if you are devoid of actual artistic talent.

Bulf 2008-12-21 10:55:00 AM
I'll think about this guy the next time i'm on the 90th hour of a drawing.

And this guy copied Joseph Beuys except that guy was a real artist. "I like America and America Likes Me" was the only performance piece that I ever really liked. But Beuys was a nazi who during WWII crash landed into a village of ethnic minority people who rather than let him die chose to nurse him back to health. This action deeply affected him and made him see the error of his ways. You have to kind of know suffering of some sort and to have everything you believe in brought to question to be a performance artist of any merit (which is probably why there is so little good art of this nature).

"I Bite America and America Bites Me?"- never heard of it. I have a strange theory that a large percentage of so called artists are just crazy people with money who are too lazy to do anything else.

I have been formally trained as a painter and illustrator. There's a difference between talent and competent execution. This is why I don't paint any more. There's little joy in craftsmanship for it's own sake.

Is acting art? How about dance? Is there any artistic talent to be observed at a performance of Cirque de Soliel?

I maintain that there is artistic value to be found in performance art just as there is art in photography and motion film.

Not that I'd use that brush to paint Mr Man-Biting-Dogman, mind you.

I don't think he has the former, but I'd be in favor of him receiving the latter.

In consideration of your handle, well played sir.

TheCrimsonKing 2008-12-21 11:30:19 AM
I agree that photography, film and even performance art can be considered artistic, but I don't consider any of them to be ART. The first two things remove the human body from the production of the work. Yes, your finger has to push the button but ultimately the image is made by the machine in use, not your hands. Film and Photography are methods of documentation, nothing more. As for the latter, well you know my opinion there. Performance "artists" are hacks and rank right up there with subway sandwich 'artists' who can make me a scrumptious Chicken Santa Fe wrap or gardening 'artists' who can plant shrubs in a aesthetically pleasing manner.

Dance and theater and the mixture of the two are artistic but what is called performance art... I don't know.

A lot of time the performance artists are torturing themselves like that woman who ate the large block of lard in the museum. And who can ever forget the man who as part of his piece, allowed someone to shoot him in the arm?

There's something about Russians that makes folks (even the French!) want to break out the handcuffs and start flinging shrill accusations of wrongdoing.

DaVinci was an artist. Rembrandt was an artist. So was Norman Rockwell. This guy is not an artist. If people pay him big money, he is a con artist, that is all.
