The Grinch: Merry Pagan Christmas!

Whoo-hoo back. We had a great feast tonight (though, as I'm on the other side of the planet, it was summer solstice) and I'm the only one left standing .. well sitting. In fact, probably falling asleep here in the next 30 mintes ;-P

And I get another feast with my Christian family on Thursday. Awesome food week, FTW!

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where hydrogen is built into helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees

Yo ho, it's hot, the sun is not
A place where we could live
But here on earth there'd be no life
Without the light it gives

We need it's light
We need it's heat
We need it's energy
Without the sun, without a doubt
There'd be no you and me

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where hydrogen is built into helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees

The sun is hot

It is so hot that everything on it is a gas: iron, copper, aluminum, and many others.

The sun is large

If the sun were hollow, a million earths could fit inside. and yet, the sun is only a middle-sized star.

The sun is far away

About 93 million miles away, and that's why it looks so small.

And even when it's out of sight
The sun shines night and day

The sun gives heat
The sun gives light
The sunlight that we see
The sunlight comes from our own sun's
Atomic energy

Scientists have found that the sun is a huge atom-smashing machine. the heat and light of the sun come from the nuclear reactions of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and helium. (*)

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where hydrogen is built into helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees

\thank you they might be giants

This is the day, you pasty-white basement dwelling brethren! Go out into the scary outdoors. That thing we call the sun won't be there long for you farkers in the Northern hemisphere anyway. You won't be burned. Use sunscreen in any case. Enjoy the shortest day!

This.
The interpretive tours and museum displays at Newgrange (among other places) are pretty incredible. I'd be fine if I never heard, "it's ceremonial" to describe a site or artifact again.

Oh, and for fun sometime you should go on a tour of Mesa Verde. The guides there are amazingly creative and imaginative.

We'll be having a yule log, too, since it's finally getting a bit cold here in NC/USA. Family dinner is at a nice steak house; no cooking chores; it's good to be a few days off from the majority's holiday ;-)

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that evolving
and revolving at 900 miles an hour
That's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned
the sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me, and all the stars that we can see
are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
of the galaxy that we call the Milky Way...

Merry Solstice, everyone. Winter's definately here. We got pounded Friday with 12 inches and getting another 6 today with the gusting winds. Mother Nature is making it very hard to finish the mandatory last minute xmas shopping.

The woman in that picture is wearing a cross on a chain around her neck. I'd wager she's probably just looking for intel on where to build the next fire.

I'm guessing there is a large scale and a duck sitting off camera.

Dude, it's not a 'Yule' fire. You're just 'destroying classified waste'. Honest. That's your story, and stick to it.

That's what we did in Saudi. Even roasted marshmallows over the fire. Of course it really WAS classified waste, but 'tis the season, y'know?
