Damn. I paid $.99 to get Jeff Buckley's version on my iPod.

As awesome as Buckley's version is, Rufus Wainwrights version just became my favorite.

/thank you, Simon... thank you so bloody much

You can't get that one on iTunes. I was rather disappointed because I had it on my old gen 1 iPod and my kids have lost it somewhere. *sigh*

I just downloaded it from the newsgroups. I have to agree, Rufus does this wonderfully.

Am I the only one who absolutely despises this song? Everything about it makes me cringe.

/only heard Buckley's version

Hiymenator [TotalFark] 2008-12-21 09:48:27 AM
I prefer Cohen's, as that's the only one I've heard and I love Cohen. I heard a cover version in Starbucks yesterday, I just don't know which one (Wainwright or Buckley). Off to the Youtubes to see who it was. It sounded pretty good.

And yet record industries wonder why people download - er steal - from unpaid sources.

How can anyone possibly rationalize paying that doofus making that much money off of a song he never wrote, one of which was performed by a guy who's been dead for ten years?

Despite the fact that they didn't use it in the movie (they used the John Cale version), the Rufus Wainwright cover is on the soundtrack for the first Shrek.

I still listen to the album from time to time. Smash Mouth tracks aside, any soundtrack that includes Self and the Eels is doing something right.

In any case, the actual disc shouldn't be too hard to find now, if trawling the internet to find the MP3 isn't your thing.

Hearing people talk about paying for music on the internet makes me feel really guilty about downloading games, music, programs, etc for free. I feel especially bad for not respecting the artist by contributing to someone who had the foresight to buy the rights to another person's creation.

Isnt he broke? Only coming out every so often for concerts to make enough money to get by for a few more years?

Of course thats just something I read somewhere, its probably bullshiat but it took me till my late 20s to recognize how great he was, my GF still hates him, its a music you have to feel to understand.

Steven Colbert is rubbing his hands together with an evil grin. In a global market, it's all about the residuals, baby.

Dont, most of the artists make more money by you going to their concerts, especially during the beginning of their career, the first contracts pays them virtually nothing. I remember Q tip from a tribe called quest talking about how their album Low End Theory, which is regarded as one of the best rap albums of all time netted the whole band something like $300,000. This from a record that sold millions, download all you want but just go to their concerts and buy merchandise, its where they make most of their money.

F*ck the record companies.

Every single cover of this song is really only a cover of Leonard Cohen in name. Artists like Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright are essentially covering John Cale's cover (which is brilliant). They use the verses that he picked and similar pacing and melodic choices.

And I'll be damned if I don't know why Mr. Cohen isn't touring in the United States.

let's all shiat on Cowell for making a wise business investment!!!

mfaby 2008-12-21 01:18:24 PM
I have doubts about him making $300K A DAY on this song.

Even if the versions TOGETHER were selling 300,000 copies a day he wouldnt be getting $1 per sale.

Nor would the residuals from it being played added up to that much.

And I can't see any combination of sales/plays adding up to $300k a day.

This version will A) Never be sold to Cowell, and B) will be included on a major movie soundtrack in '09. It's still under wraps, though, so no other information is being released at this time, unfortunately.

Crowe has also covered Joan of Arc, which was recently included on a MOJO Magazine special compilation CD insert thingie alongside Nick Cave and Martha Wainwright.

Buckleys sounds more like cohens than cale's, its also the best version IMO, its a sound you can feel coming through that you cant get from cales version, its ok but only because buckley seemed to nail it.

THANK YOU! I thought I was the only one that appreciated Allison Crowe's version. I have heard the others, and prefer hers.

John Cale's version is the best.

THIS!!!!

Cohen's is allright... too much 80's production/minimalist synths.

I just don't like Buckley's version too much... matter of fact, i think he's ok... i don't get the whole big whoo-ha about him anyway [i can't be just because he died early.... right?] i listened to his famous album [forget the name] and it was alright... i guess... nothing too special IMHO...
anywho
that one on that British show performed by some chick made me want to stab my ears out with a rusty fork [from the clip i heard on the radio, anyway]

the best ones, IMHO anyway, are
3. Cohen's original.

2. Rufus Wainwright's [i couldn't care less about his sexual orientation.... he's a great singer, and a good songwriter --- from the few songs i've heard --- and an interesting arranger]

1. John Cale's. [i didn't hear his "fragments...." version tho...
i saw that in the cd store years ago but i stupidly didn't pick it up....

/ p.s. my favourite Cohen albums are:
"I'm Your Man" --- one of the singer/songwriter albums i grew up with, my first musical experience of Cohen.
"Commander Cohen: Live" a great live album... good renditions... he's actually in pretty darn good voice this time around... and the sound quality is outstanding for 1979. Neat song choices too.
"Live" [1972] [black and white cover]
stark, minimalist, very sombre, a little bit depressing, and even a little bit difficult listen. a good listen on a cold winter's night. Great song selection, great lyrics as always. With the infamous "Please Don't Pass Me By".
