His brother must have been going way too fast while he was back there on that tube. If I remember correctly, the top speed you are to tow someone on a tube is 25 to 30 mph. I am sure that would not cut his arm off at that speed.

A shark omnommed it.

that is unfortunate...

come on... how many people here have tried to pull something witha rope and have wrapped it around their hand/arm so your hands wouldnt slip off??

that had to be one hell of a wave... of that guys arm was a little too small

i would usually say this was a dumbass or FL tag... but more "Sad" in my mind

Never, ever, wrap a rope around your arm or wrist. It's stronger than your skin, or in this case, your entire arm.

Much better to "hip belay" it, running it around your upper butt, and using the friction to control the rope. If the force gets too high you can fight back with all your leg power. If the situation gets out of control and you want to bail out, just let go. The rope will just fly away.

Never, ever, wrap a rope around you!

Not without an onion. It wouldn't be fashionable.

A hip belay:

www.rescuedynamics.ca

Note how the rope goes behind the hips, but is never wrapped around a body part.

This is a rock climbing example. In non-climbing situations, you don't need to be anchored and you can let go with the brake hand if you must.

I didn't know about that -thank you... but what i am saying is.. a lot... the majority of people will just wrap the rope around their arm or hand to be able to hold on better.

tug o war... pulling car from a ditch... all i know that is in order for a rope to cut your farking arm off.. that is way more than expected force... like attaching one end of the rope to a damn cannon

Authorities, including a Broward Sheriff's Office helicopter, scanned the waters in and around the inlet for the man's arm but could not find it, King said.

In an unrelated story, a severed arm washed up on a beach front in British Columbia this afternoon, Canadian sources reported.

You wouldn't really have to be going that fast, if the person towing you takes off too quickly it will flip your over ass backwards outta the tube so fast. The big problem is that this guy was dumb enough to wrap a tow rope around his arm, while being pulled by a vehicle. I don't even understand why, most tubes just have a place to secure the tow rope right to the tube.

That being said, when we were kids (like 13) we pulled each other on the tubes behind jetskis and we had them up to 50 mph regularly and we all managed to not get hurt. Fun fact: if you lean forward and tuck your head when you are going that fast, the tube will dive under water and then pop back up really fast. Probably hands down the coolest thing ever.

/.1 miles from Lake Huron

That rental is only half paid for.

studebaker hoch 2008-12-21 01:04:20 PM
No tug of war or stuck car is worth a major injury.

Wrapping the rope around your wrist makes your body part of the system. Now you can't let go if you want to!

If the system is going to fail, it will fail at the weakest point...guess what that is?

Best to at least give yourself the option of letting go.

/sounds like the guy in TFA was trying to get pulled by the jetski by tying the rope to himself, then sitting in the tube. Incorrect, that will cost you 1 (one) limb. Correct answer is tie the rope to the tube and then hang on to the tube.

The wind is blowing at least 30 mph in this picture. The tarp is acting like a big sail. Rope wrapped around a hand or wrist would be a guaranteed friction burn. Nasty!

Doing it hip-style, we were able to handle the tarp no problem at all.

My left hand is guiding the rope, not applying power.
My right hand is providing braking but is relying mainly on friction across my hips
My legs are doing all the work.

Piece of cake, I'm doing essentially no work here but walking backwards, getting yanked a bit by the sail.

/This is the kind of scenario where n00bs get hurt all the time.
