you know i thought that bush was asking for shoes man cause i saw the clip with no sound. i mean if the leader of the free world is asking for shoes i would throw mine at him too. if this happened in America, he would disappear labeled as a terrorist, deported to gitmo, have a "fair" trial, and live the rest of his life as a made man in gitmo cause they get better treatment than most people do here in america get.

I've noticed on CNN they'll say something like "So why is everyone obsessed with people like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears?" I sit there and almost yell back at the TV "I DUNNO, YOU HAVEN'T TOLD ME YET"

Navel-gazers. STFU and GBTW.

This is why I read the Economist. It's pretty clearly a conservative magazine but at least it's open about it and because its broken up into geographical sections, you know you're definitely going to get news about Latin America and Africa, two regions you barely hear about in the US media.

Notice how sneaky CNN is? By and large, they are the driving force behind the Caylee Anthony murder story.

They've slowly built up the moral outrage, via Headline News and Nancy Grace, behind what should be another run of the mill "Mom kills daughter" story, that shouldn't even escape local coverage into a must-see 'What happens next???' national soap opera.

Some people I work with can't talk about anything else but this shiat.

And oh, MAN....Is CNN raking in the coin because of them.

I'm pretty liberal, so I'll take a shot at this:

First, a little cultural lesson: In the Arab world, showing the soles of ones shoes to someone is considered an insult, on the same level as flipping someone the bird here in 'Murica. Throwing your shoes would be akin to biatch slapping someone- it isn't meant to injure the person, but rather insult them.

So, if Obama managed to convince the rest of America to attack, say, California, based on false pretenses, cooked intelligence reports, and half-truths; killing several tens of thousands of Californians in the process, then occupied California for 7 more years, killing another couple hundred thousand people, and someone were to biatch slap "St. Obama," I'd be pretty okay with it.

That said, your comparison is f*cking retarded.

Wait two years, and you will eat your words. Obama is going to have to make hard decisions, most of them short term aren't going to please his base, and opinion will turn for some people.

His comparison isn't retarded. You will question why people disrespect our new President at some point.

Don't get me wrong, there will ALWAYS be people who dislike the President- I'm sure there will be PLENTY of people wanting to throw shoes at Obama in two years- hell there are plenty that want to now. The point, however is that this Iraqi guy has a pretty good reason to be pissed off at Bush, and to make the comparison as is right now is ridiculous at best. The point I was responding to was the original poster's nonequivalent partisan comparison.

I find this prescient:

coco ebert: We're just hoping that's all that will get thrown at him.

I do, too. Given the left's giddiness for wishing GW Bush death over the last 8 years, I can't say any of you deserve kid glove treatment.

Look, if Obama tramples all over the Constitution, disregards the rights of American citizens, and international law the same way Bush has, I'll be right there with you throwing metaphorical shoes. But until then, to use the left's treatment of Bush as an excuse to go full froth after Obama is absurd.

But conservatives are usually a lot more polite on average.

Put down the big brush, buddy. Each side has their fringe- and I don't think either side can claim the high ground here.

Throwing your shoes would be akin to biatch slapping spitting on someone- it isn't meant to injure the person, but rather insult them.

FTFY

biatch-slapping someone is more about establishing/reasserting control or dominance; throwing shoes is more about showing gross contempt/disrespect (hence the more apropos spitting analogy). Might seem pedantic to some, but there is a pretty serious difference in intention between slapping someone and spitting on them. To better put it into perspective: when Saddam was ousted, people gathered in the streets to "shoe-slap" images/likenesses of him; if a similar event were to happen "in the West," the shoe slapping would be replaced with spitting and carry the exact same meaning/intent.

Actually, I do read an assortment of media outlets. If you look above, I wrote that I read the Economist on a weekly basis. McClatchy were the only guys to not fall in line with the administration line on the Iraq War when most newspapers did, including your "slighty liberal" New York Times and Wash Post. I don't look at newspapers in terms of ideology but in terms of who is willing to search for truth even when the official government line states otherwise.

Btw, the Wall Street Journal's news articles are not liberal or conservative but their editorial page is extremely conservative, not slightly so.

There is no high ground. That's my point.

There. Is. No. High. Ground.

People have been racing for the low ground since before Nixon - but he gave everybody an excuse to get up in their business.

No heroes will ever exist, ever again. It's all a farce. There will be no Woodward and Bernstein, there will be no Watergate, and there will be no 'expose'. Everyone is tied so closely to someone else that to call bullshiat is simply to announce you quit your job.

Obama will be exceptional at dealing with a destroyed economy. He's probably the smartest President we've had since Teddy Roosevelt.

Circumstances will not work in his favor. I'm glad we have a smart man leading us through this, but we're all farked regardless.

Why? Because you and I are talking about impending doom on a farking web site. This doesn't feed us, this doesn't get us to work, and this doesn't do shiat. We are all an exercise in worthless expended energy.
