You're right. We should just scrap this whole voting thing and go to something simpler, like a constitutional monarchy.

/also, this country isn't democratic

Thorndyke Barnhard 2008-12-19 11:23:59 AM
Should have greenlit the other one. Better headline and more factual.

Franken is leading by hundreds of votes with the contested votes that will be counted.

Franken's gonna be your senator, and that's...ok.

Taking his own advice, Coleman should drop out and accept his defeat rather than dragging this out any further.

Well, I do and I'm proud of voting for him. There needs to be one Wellstone-esque liberal firebrand in the Senate and it might as well stay in the same seat. He doesn't really match my politics, but I believe in a diverse Congress. It's the same reason I'm also proud of voting for the real Muslin.

I don't think that's entirely accurate. While I agree that Franken is a douchebag, it should be pointed out that Coleman is both a slime ball and a douchebag.

I think the states should institute the idea of a mathematical tie. Not an exact tie but if the separation of votes falls within some mathematical tolerance then it is a tie and they need a runoff. The idea that with any hand counting going on that being up by 200 out of hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of votes is a win and not a tie is ridiculous.

The Why Not Guy [TotalFark] 2008-12-19 12:50:39 PM

See, we have this thing called "numbers." With "numbers" when you have two that are different, one is bigger. We also have this thing called "voting." With "voting" you compare the "number" of votes and the one with the bigger "number" wins.

So then they vote again and again it's suuuper close and there's a hand recount and....? I know you're going to say that "no hand count of hundreds of thousands of votes could ever be 100% accurate," but if there's never a possibility of winning by a single vote, then every vote REALLY does not count.

You see we have these things called mistakes. Mistakes happen and the bigger the number of things being counted the larger the number of mistakes. If the threshold is lower than the normal error rate times the number of votes it is really a tie even if someone has more because we don't know the true will of the people we only know the will is close enough to be mistaken. Awarding seats on such slim margins only encourages stupid lawsuits and endless recounts.

I think the real point is if you win by a single vote then the votes aren't what counted it was the counters that counted.

America is a democratic republic. It is therefore both a democracy AND a republic. The two are not mutually exclusive.
