(Idolator) Cool While music fans swear by Pet Sounds-era Brian Wilson, little known fact is brother Dennis Wilson had a solo album, 1977's "Pacific Ocean Blue." A more stripped-down, soulful album which just got a deluxe re-issue. Surf's up   (idolator.com) divider line 13

anyone here ever heard the whole thing? How good is it?

His gravelly, wrecked-by-alcohol voice on the link sounds damaged, yet really, really soulful. Im suspecting I could really get into this album

For those who dont know, interesting fact is that he hung out with Charlie Manson and his "family" for a while, until he got creeped out. At that point it was too late, he had to abandon his own house, which was overtaken by the family at this point.

There is even a song that Manson wrote "cease to exist" that the Beach Boys retitled, recorded and included in one of their albums (20/20 if my memory serves)

rumours goes that Manson was very pissed at not being credited for it. Hence why Dennis was terrified of them

I still have the copy I liberated from the radio station I was working at when it was released. Like "Smile" it's one of those albums that critics and would-be critics like to praise endlessly and yet it really doesn't stand up to repeated listening.

Look at the Idolator review: "and he plays such beautiful chords on the piano." Geebus. Was this written by a third-grader?

Dennis and his GF at the time, Karen Lamm, were the "it" couple of the day and it was hard to pick up a copy of Rolling Stone or Creem without stumbling over a photo of them. I've always thought this album was released more for his fame and her looks than the music within. I mean, may the FSM bless them, but it's not that great of an album.

The album is fantastic, and the bonus tracks make it even better. I was really skeptical about the Taylor Hawkins version of Holy Man, but it's just as good as the rest of them. I bought Smile and listened to it once during an acid trip, but never really had the urge to play it much after that. Pacific Ocean Blue is one of the best summer albums ever. Won't do you much good now, but in 6 months you'll be glad you have it.

Just?

As others have said, it's been out for nearly a year--since March or so. I pre-ordered it on Amazon and I remember there was such a run on it that it was more than a month before I finally got a copy.

As for how it is? I was unimpressed. I mean, it's good, but the comparisons to Pet Sounds are absurd (though, yes, they're certainly different kinds of records). But then, Pet Sounds is one of my favourite albums ever, so there's all kinds of biases here.

It is better than Brian Wilson's new one, though. But that also may or may not be saying much.

/Really likes That Lucky Old Sun.
//Suspects anyone without a Brian Wilson obsession won't.
///You wanna fight about it?

I downloaded this when it started popping up on best-of-2008 lists, it didn't hold my interest.

I tried a year ago several times to get some version of this story submitted. You know, when the reissue actually came out?

Have had this album for years on vinyl, and turned several people onto it. Best solo album by a Beach Boy? Could very well be.
