Decriminalization? I didn't know gayness was a crime. Ya know the gays are going to get their equal rights sooner or later, so why not sooner?

TeddyRooseveltsMustache: Decriminalization? I didn't know gayness was a crime.

As stated in TFA: "More than 70 U.N. members outlaw homosexuality, and in several of them homosexual acts can be punished by execution."

And, Subby, by using the "change" thing in the headline, are you somehow trying to associate this with Obama? Because he's not, you know, actually President yet, and doesn't have any control over how the U.S. votes on a U.N. resolution.

That depends on where you live.

If you're anywhere east of Europe - The Americas and Europe are considered the Western Nations.

Before 2003 there were quite a few laws still on the books, after that all state laws were invalidated by Lawrence v. Texas; however, the US military decided that that decision doesn't fully apply to them.

I came in to discuss this too. Not only does this have nothing to do with Obama or his campaign, TFA states:

According to some of the declaration's backers, U.S. officials expressed concern in private talks that some parts of the declaration might be problematic in committing the federal government on matters that fall under state jurisdiction. In numerous states, landlords and private employers are allowed to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation; on the federal level, gays are not allowed to serve openly in the military.

Carolyn Vadino, a spokeswoman for the U.S. mission to the U.N., stressed that the United States - despite its unwillingness to sign - condemned any human rights violations related to sexual orientation.

While almost everyone would agree that hate crimes against homosexuals should be punishable by law, we enter a gray area when trying to make laws about who landlords can rent to and who employers can hire. If we allow every slight against homosexuals to be punishable by law, how many people are going to take advantage of this? How much easier are we making it to use the adage, "You won't hire me because I'm gay" (or black or a woman, etc.) People in this country should be free to be gay, and people who have a problem with it should be free not to have any part in it.

Anyway, this country is still reeling from white guilt and affirmative action. Let's do one thing at a time.

I'm a Christian. Not only do I support gay marriage so does my church. So does Obama's, if he is still part of a church that belongs to the United Church of Christ.

If someone gives an invocation at an event, does that mean that everyone must subscribe to all of that person's beliefs?

Give it a farking break.

He's against gay marriage (fought for Prop 8 in CA) anti-abortion and anti-embryonic stem cell research.

Seems like a stupid choice to me. Rick Warren's got more in common with Bush 41 than Obama.

ExJerseyGirl: If someone gives an invocation at an event, does that mean that everyone must subscribe to all of that person's beliefs?

Well, no...but the dude has said some pretty bad things. I mean, imagine it were 40 years ago, and the Pres-Elect invited an opponent of civil rights/supporter of Jim Crow to speak.

In a way, I don't like it, in a way I do (it's passing the torch from a truly hate-filled ultra-right wing evangelical leadership to one that appears to be genuinely concerned about things like poverty, peace, and all that, even if I think he's still behind on some issues)...but mostly I wish preacher-men weren't so front and center in the inauguration at all.

Not even remotely the same thing. Comparing being gay to being a certain race is causing some backlash, IMHO.

The arguments against gay marriage, pretty much the last thing they're fighting for, are pretty similar to the old arguments against interracial marriage.

It's a valid comparison.

Well, I am by no means going to try to change your mind, but I think it's quite comparable. And it may be causing some backlash against some people, I don't know, but it is also creating passion and intensity on the other side of the debate, as well.

I don't know about you, but I never chose to be straight. At one point, girls stopped being icky and started being very appealing. I was no more able to direct my libido at men than I was to change the color of my skin.

Dread Pirate Slasher 2008-12-18 08:36:27 PM
jbuist: It's a valid comparison.

Perhaps, but I still feel that a lot of the black community are pissed off about the comparison and voted accordingly on Prop 8.

Nothing is going to change the mind of those against it. I feel like the focus should be on the legal aspect of marriage in general. It's too bad some have felt like taking their protests into the churches, it's causing even more hate. Plus, it's asinine and sets a poor example.

Rest of the world, we'll get there. We're huge fans of drama, though. Especially our gays (wooka-wooka-wooka...f*ck you, it worked for Fozzie Bear.) But don't lose sight of us.

We're a relatively young nation when all things are considered. But even you have to agree that we've done some pretty good things up to this point. Don't write us off. We're cool, lame, chav, loco, offensive, infidels, 1980's-style-awesome, right-on-the-money, eh...doughnuts-n-hockey...(well, our more civil brothers to the north),chiseling twatters, WTF, lol, zomfg, nice and...just there. We're also the sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads. In the end, c'mon. You all adore us. We're righteous dudes.

We make mistakes. Everyone does. The best I can say is that we wear our mistakes on our sleeves. We're Americans. You get what you see...except for the fat chicks
