I'm still trying to "get" U2. I know what makes blues good for me - the guitar howling. I know what makes metal good - riffs, guitar play, esoteric drumbeats..

U2 never seems to "go" anywhere, and the lyrics seem incredibly trite. Bono also emotes ALOT, which doesn't go very well with the extremely laid back style of music for me.

U2 hasn't done anything near interesting since the '80s, but that won't stop every radio station (and now, almost every SiriXM rock station, too!) and media outlet in general from cramming this new album into my ears for four years or however long it takes until their next album.

Yup.

My guess is it will sound like All the Atomic Bombs You Can't Leave Behind, Part 3.

Nut-uh! Achtung Baby-Zooropa-Passengers-Pop was brilliant to me. Eno brings out the experimental in everyone. He and Bryne's recent collaboration was very enjoyable.

I burned out on U2 and Bono's whining/etc by Shake, Rattle and Hum. With Achtung Baby (and the subsequent albums), they reached further and further out - not always successfully, of course. Eno I think coaxes some great things.

Some of my favorite cuts include Lemon, Mofo, Miami... I could go on. Their last 3 albums have been boring to me - it doesn't seem like they've grown at all.

Greatly looking forward to it.....

/yes, I know I'm weird

Last 3 seem to have all been remakes of One and She Moves in Mysterious Ways.

That said, I've never understood the hate for U2. Bono, I can understand, maybe.

Anyone hear his version of Cohen's Hallelujah?

Wow. That was horrid. Even for him. Bon Jovi's version of that song was better. Bon farking Jovi.

U2 was Jimi Hendrix's favorite band. This is well documented.

Do you like U2? I've been a big U2 fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Boy. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Boy where Bono's presence became more apparent. I think Achtung Baby was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Bono, Clayton and Mullen. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to "Acrobat". In this song, Bono addresses the problems of abusive political authority. "Mysterious Ways" is the most moving pop song of the 1990s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole.

I still like October, Boy, War and The Unforgettable Fire. And the live one, Under a Blood Red Sky. The band hasn't appealed to me as much since those days, but I still respect them. Same as I feel about REM...god, I loved them.

seveword 2008-12-19 01:25:53 AM
It's a waste of time to even bother insulting U2. I'd much rather spend the time typing out this comment than bother saying anything (de)constructive about this 'band'. I'd rather sit here, listening to the music that I enjoy, and revel in the fact that I don't listen to U2.

Meh, $band has been crap since $early_record. I actually started listening to them in $year_before_you_were_born when they were called $band_old_name but after that they became popular and started to stink.

I prefer listening to $band_you_never_heard_of or $another_band_you_never_heard_of, but don't even try to check them out or I will start listening to something that doesn't even exist yet!

Subby shows complete ignorance of a band's 30-year course of evolution! News at 11.

But seriously, if you can't hear the difference between War, Achtung Baby, The Joshua Tree and their recent stuff, you should really keep your idiot trap shut, subby.

/not a hardcore fan, just someone who appreciates good music

Brilliant album. The subsequent stuff is a bit, I dunno...uninspired? All I know is that I worship this album at the same time as I can barely care less about anything that's popped out of that clown car since.

Stay Cool: But you have to remember the hordes of hipsters who have some kind of automatic 'since the 80s' or 'everything sounds the same' button that gets pushed every time someone says 'U2', facts be damned.

This. Anyway it's a collaboration between Eno and U2. A bit of ambient rock lite if you will.

Sweet! When are the dates? I'm hoping to hit Chicago, Atlanta, and St. Louis this time around!
Also, oh no, the band changes. The stuff they put out in their 40's sounds different from the stuff they put out in their 30's which sounds different from the stuff they put out in their 20's. Personally, I don't even like their first few albums and my favorite stuff is what they put out in the 90's so suck it.

I'm not a big U2 fan, but I enjoy many of their singles.

I also like watching Adam Duritz stumble all over the stage.

I'm hoping I can make a Chicago show again. I saw them at the United Center back in '05 during the Vertigo tour; it was one of the nights they recorded the DVD. Awesome show, but I came for the music, not the politics--given it was Bono, however, I was none too surprised.
But this time...lay off the human rights crap. We came to hear your music, not your pontifications.

AspectRatio: Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina,

Salome, and I think it's an oblique reference to the daughter of Herod's wife, who danced so hot and sexy that Herod's all "I'll give you whatever you want -- up to half my kingdom." And then her mom/his wife is all, I hate John the Baptist because he says I'm an adulterer, so, tell Herod "I want John the Baptist's head on a platter." So, she asked for John the Baptist's head on a platter." So, while he was sad, because he'd go down and shoot the breeze with John now and then, he complied. And so John was beheaded and his head put on a platter. Because Salome shaked, shaked, shaked. Shake shake shake did Salome.

Must have been quite the dancer.

Anyway, Bono's version of Hallelujah is pretty bad.

Having said that, one of my favorite remakes of the song is by a guy named Michael Knott.

The song is on his myspace page, can't find it anywhere else.

Go here: http://www.myspace.com/michaelgerardknott then go down to "hallelujah"

I own it, but I can't sit through it. And I really like U2. But, hands down, Rattle and Hum pretty is their worst album. It has, maybe, 4 or 5 decent songs, maybe 2 good ones - tops.

They should have just released Heartland as a single. Hallelujah here she comes, a B-side from I dunno what is, I think, the best tune from that era. This mix sucks --- bass heavy, but you can get the idea .. and some funky video .. Hallelujah Here She Comes

WOW I ALWAYS WANTED TO WATCH U2 TRY ON BOOTS WOW

Also, the last three albums, grow on you. Some tunes are really good, others are dumb, but they're well executed. They do have some very good arrangements and production, and some nice parts.

And am I weird for listing "Wake Up Dead Man" as my absolute favorite U2 song? Maybe.

I don't have too many 90's and up records by Eno...
just "another day..." that one from 2004/05.

Three stages of U2

1. Punk pop sorta-Christian band
Boy,October, War
2. Alternative acoustic sorta-Americanesque band
Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum
3. Adult contemporary alternative band
Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop, All You Can't Leave Behind, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

Last great CD/Album: Zooropa
Last compelling song: If God Will Send His Angels/Mofo

what's passengers?

The band and Eno got together and created a side project involving soundtracks to imaginary films. Obviously it was Eno's concept, but they managed to have a minor hit with Ms Sarajevo, which featured Luciano Pavarotti. For the most part it's U2 doing ambient music. My favorite track is "Slug."
The liner notes for the CD included brief descriptions of the films each song was allegedly attached to. Kinda cool and fruity in a way only Eno could pull off. Sonically nice too.
