It was the economy stupid (and Sarah Palin who scared anybody who thought it would be nice to have a VP who could actually be President).

I can't think of anything they might have done differently. Although I heard somewhere there was this Ayers guy... if they had brought that up and tried to tie it to Obama it might have been the game breaker.

1) Sarah Palin. Horrible, horrible choice. Really scared the bejezus out of a lot of rationally-thinking people. Lord knows I donated a good deal of money to Obama because of her.
2) You guys are a bunch of anti-intellectual dicks and you revel in being anti-intellectual dicks. I will always vote against your kind.

I guess the GOP is simply going to have to come to terms with the fact that they may have to learn to go negative if they want to win elections. They were horribly victimized by the press this time around and yet they restrained themselves from any kind of attack ads whatsoever. While being so incredibly noble might be personally satisfying and make Jesus smile, it's just not going to work in librul America.

I was absolutely floored by Palin. The only thing she had going for her was her ambition. I got branded as a troll because I just couldn't help posting the most sarcastic comments possible about her "qualifications." And people used my arguments as justification for why she was a good pick.

I'm still floored that right-wing forum tards actually think she is the future of the Republican party.

Those morons were actually saying that if they lost, the liberals and the liberal media would "attack" her because they are afraid of her.

Nah, what they should have done was point out how Obama's popularity - a charismatic, (relatively) young politician calling for a massive change in government - and ability to deliver excellent speeches is not necessarily a good thing, as Adolf Hitler was also good in those categories.

Dear GOP,

Please continue blaming this election on "the liberals", "the Mexicans", "the vast left-wing conspiracy", "the media", and any other group you can think of. By continuing to lash out like an angry two-year-old whose favorite toy has just been taken away, instead of looking inward and getting your party back to its roots, you're all but ensuring another few terms of Democratic majority control. Now more than ever we desperately need a party to represent reduced government, fiscal thriftiness, and a true patriotic desire to make America #1 in everything we do. I'm not sure what that party is or where they are, but you're not them. So please, please keep this up.

Please.

The absolute best thing that could happen to the Democratic party would be for the GOP to run Palin in 2012. And 2016. And 2020. And 2024. And 2030.

In fairness, anyone with half a brain in their head was afraid of her. The thought of her being in power was terrifying, and I really think she is the reason the election wasn't ultimately closer.

That, and McCain not realizing that every stupid, contradictory, or malicious thing he/his camp said/did would be picked up on. Obama/Biden and their camps had the same hurdle, mind you, but they didn't do it nearly as frequently.

But really, it comes down to Palin, and yes, I think she scared a lot of people. But not in the way they think, more in a "holy crap, there's a knock at the door and Leatherface is out there" sort of terroristic way.

xalres 2008-12-18 04:59:10 PM
Yeah, a vast left-wing conspiracy. A group of left leaning people working to sow in the public skepticism and apprehension of McCain and his policies. I think they called themselves "The Obama Campaign".

The immigrants thing is actually correct.

Problem is Bush got 45% of Latinos in 2004 and McCain was only able to get 33% of them. Republicans lost them in a big way during the past four years.

Peter von Nostrand 2008-12-18 05:10:38 PM
Without a compelling reason to vote for a candidate, the nebulous "swing" voter will generally vote for the other candidate. A campaign based around "I'm not Bush" or "I'm not Obama" won't win. I would think that McCain would have realized that but then again I'm pretty sure that right wing bloggers were really running the McCain Campaign.

Rapmaster2000 2008-12-18 05:11:26 PM
McInturff, who was McCain's pollster

A McCain campaign employee has found a reason why the bad campaign wasn't his fault. Shocking.

One thing I was struck by, and which few mentioned, was that Obama's absolute crushing fundraising advantage came about as a result of some huge number of million ordinary people each giving a few hundred.

Obama having more money was not inevitable. It was not a result of corruption, or playing the system. It was a result of lots of people liking him a whole lot. McCain could have matched that, if he'd run a more appealing campaign.

In short, the causality of "McCain couldn't run a better campaign because he was financially outclassed" runs backward. McCain was financially outclassed because his opponent ran a super campaign.

FTFA: had the Republican National Committee been able to raise more than $200 million in the final two months, without any restrictions on how the McCain campaign could use it appeal to more than just racist, wealthy white people, or have millions of grassroots supporters wo sent donations in increments of $5, $10, and $20's...

Exactly. I can't think of a more terrifying candidate. I think I'd want Bush over her. No, wait. I think I would prefer her over Fred Phelps. But that's about it.

Just to reiterate, conservatives, because I know that the only thing that you guys think of is the winning of elections and anything beyond that is of no consequence to you...

Terrified, in this sense, is not: "I am terrified of her because she is a strong GOP candidate that could really win them an election."

This is terrified as in, "My Lord, she could damage America in ways that even George Bush wouldn't allow. And she'd think that God is on her side while she did it."

It also helped that McCain's campaign was completely tone deaf to the crisis even as it was unfolding. Having your chief economic advisor calling it a "mental recession" and those affected "a nation of whiners" was just hammering one nail after another into the coffin.
