This could get very ugly. I hope Maliki is using a Coup as an excuse to do away with political rivals.

Jail anyone who disagrees with you.

Democracy in the Middle East, you say? After all, it's a well known fact that Democracy can always be spread at the barrel of a gun.

You hope?

Id this how you see a stable democracy being deployed in the Middle East?

Random Reality Check: Democracy in the Middle East, you say? After all, it's a well known fact that Democracy can always be spread at the barrel of a gun.

It worked in our case, but I think it works a lot better when the ones wielding the guns are the people, not a 3rd party.

Seemed to work okay with Germany and Japan.

/but that required a long term military presence.

Just like Christianity.

Also, I wonder how many people just learned how to pronounce coup.

PapermonkeyExpress: Seemed to work okay with Germany and Japan.

Germany already had a democracy that was corrupted and overrun by the Nazis, no? I thought we just put them back on track more or less. And Japan was a homogeneous culture, so it was easier to point all in one direction. Less likelihood of civil war.

Plus the long occupation that you mentioned.

Uhh, I'm not sure a pro-Iranian Prime Minister having his own secret police force and using them to do away with his political rivals is really a positive scenario here.

RemyDuron 2008-12-18 06:00:07 AM
Yeah, Germany and Japan are not comparisons you want to make here. Japan attacked us, was against us as an entire nation, and chose to surrender without us invading their main homeland. It also had began a series of France-emulating progressive reforms before being a German-style militaristic state after the Germans kicked the crap out of the French in the Franco-Prussian war. Had Japan not surrendered, and forced us to invade them to end the war, things would not have gone so well.

Maliki can be bought. And when he is, you have a strong leader again, in the pocket of the US, repressing his people efficiently. In other words, it'll be like the stupid war never happened. Mission accomplished.

hate to pull a cliche' here, but -

step 1. invade country
step 2. accuse interior ministers of plotting coup, switch out for more favorable ones (be it on the US or Iraqi sides)
step 3. enjoy more political power.

I think the better question is "who cares?". They could all do a Kool-Aid thing, and I doubt the pity party would include more the number of people it would take to scavenge the leftovers.

Just because they have oil.... yah, that makes them more important then those in worst off places.

Jail is for rookies.

I might have to pay up on a bet with one of my Egyptian friends.

He said the Iraqi were insects and neede a ruthless dictator to keep them in line. I expressed naive optimism that they could make a good run at democracy if given stability.

/he didn't like it when I asked when was the last time he voted against Mubarak.

Well, either you're closing your eyes
To a situation you do now wish to acknowledge
Or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated
By the presence of a shoe thrower in your community.

Ya Got Trouble, I tell ya
Right here in the Confluence of Two Rivers City!
Trouble with a capital "T" that Rhymes with "C"
"C" that stands for Coup, started by a man throwing a shoe

and that's Trouble
