Is Illinois good at weeding out corrupt politicians or does Illinois breed corruption?

I know what the likely correct answer is, but it could be both.

Alternatively, Illinois politicians could just be dumb enough to get caught, while many corrupt politicians in the rest of the country are never caught.

I suspect that all politicians are naturally corrupt, its just the ones who get caught in their corruption are stupid, and for some reason stupid politicians flock to Illinois.

Man. Obama's really spinning this one incident into a huge big deal. So this is how he will avoid saving the economy. He will argue that the US is too corrupt to do anything about the recession, and go about arresting third rate political personalities to clean up the government (and divert taxpayer attention from his policies).

That upside being that with his new controll he can maybe shut own the DHS.

Kerry voters in 2004: "You Bush voters are soooo dumb! You're too easily fooled by Fauxnews!"

McCain/Libertarian voters in 2008: "You Obama voters are soooo dumb! You're too easily fooled by a smooth talking, corrupt, empty suit!"

Pooh. Illinois got it's start back in 1855 when Mayor Levi Boone had cops firing on German beer drinkers in the Lager Beer Riot. It's been nothing but corrupt mayors, organized crime and "vote early and vote often" ever since.

moothemagiccow 2008-12-17 11:17:33 PM
It's the 4th most populous state in the nation. Are you trying to imply there's something specifically terrible about Illinois, or that corruption in government is common? I doubt you'll find different figures in NY, TX or CA.

And it's not 27 a year, it's a mean of 27 a year. And why 1971? Was it all peaches and cream in 1970?

You guys are wrong. It's clear that Obama saw how slimy Rezko and Blago were and managed to use them while staying away from their corruption. The man won in Chicago fighting against the Daley machine. He legitimately beat out opponent after opponent. No dirty tricks, no lies, nothing but good old-fashioned honest door-to-door campaigning.

Emil has to be clean. Why else would Obama pick him to be chief of staff?

We like our politicians corrupt around here. It keeps our otherwise boring lives of drinking to excess, banging hot chicks, and eating thick pizzas interesting. I don't think it's the state senators who end up getting corrupted; they don't have enough power. It's usually executives; mayors and governors are the ones with the most pull and get offered the most for their services.

If you're looking for B.Hussein corruption, look no farther than his dealings immediately after becoming a US Senator -

Less than two months after ascending to the United States Senate, Barack Obama bought more than $50,000 worth of stock in two speculative companies whose major investors included some of his biggest political donors.

One of the companies was a biotech concern that was starting to develop a drug to treat avian flu. In March 2005, two weeks after buying about $5,000 of its shares, Mr. Obama took the lead in a legislative push for more federal spending to battle the disease.

The most recent financial disclosure form for Mr. Obama, an Illinois Democrat, also shows that he bought more than $50,000 in stock in a satellite communications business whose principal backers include four friends and donors who had raised more than $150,000 for his political committees.

But that has very little to do with being from Illinois; it's much more related to being a US Senator, where the stakes (and the bribery payouts) are much higher. But we knew all of this before we elected him, so it's not really a surprise to anyone...right?

Besides, Obama's potential corruption looks like nothing compared to his former opposition's... They're politicians, folks, none of them are worth a damn.

As someone who works in Illinois, Illinois breeds corruption. The sad part is that the people of Illinois excuse and accept the fact that their elected officials and public workers are all in on the graft. "Its just the way things are done.". Its sad on so many levels.

How convenient of you to leave out the next three paragraphs:

A spokesman for Mr. Obama, who is seeking his party's presidential nomination in 2008, said yesterday that the senator did not know that he had invested in either company until fall 2005, when he learned of it and decided to sell the stocks. He sold them at a net loss of $13,000.

The spokesman, Bill Burton, said Mr. Obama's broker bought the stocks without consulting the senator, under the terms of a blind trust that was being set up for the senator at that time but was not finalized until several months after the investments were made.

"He went about this process to avoid an actual or apparent conflict of interest, and he had no knowledge of the stocks he owned," Mr. Burton said. "And when he realized that he didn't have the level of blindness that he expected, he moved to terminate the trust."

Christ you're an intellectually dishonest tool.

The RIchest Man in Babylon 2008-12-18 02:12:33 AM
And the fourth paragraph:

Mr. Obama has made ethics a signature issue, and his quest for the presidency has benefited from the perception that he is unlike politicians who blend public and private interests. There is no evidence that any of his actions ended up benefiting either company during the roughly eight months that he owned the stocks.

If he's as corrupt as the neocons seem to think he is, he must be VERY good at it, if the Clinton Machine and the McCain campaign couldn't dig it up.

What we need is a clean politician without ties to a corrupt state. Like that up and coming Bobby Jindal. Or Sarah Palin.

There's no way this "he's from a corrupt state so he's corrupt" line will blow back on Republicans with winners like those.

What scandal? The scandal is in YOUR head and isn't real. Oh, BTW, it would be nice if Republicans actually started proposing policy rather than just being reactionary partisan biatches when they don't like something. We don't care what Republicans don't like, we want to know what they plan on doing to push this country forward.
