I can't think of a Hootie and the Blowfish song. None. I'm not even sure what sort of music they play.

I have seen Hootie & the Blowfish live four times. I am 23 years old. Take from that what you will.

DrowningLessons 2008-12-17 08:56:51 PM
Hey, the 1995-1998 period was a good time to be a live, and is probably where my main taste in music will be, you know? In 10 years we'll hear Hootie and the Blowfish hits (and they did have like three) on the oldies stations, when we're remembering how awesome the 90s was (we won't have any more success explaining bell-bottoms than those from the 60s).

Hootie and the Blowfish is the easy listening side of the Nirvana generation. I don't like any of the rest of their music, but I'll still pop in Cracked Rear View if I'm cleaning the garage or something, you know?

I don't mind Hootie on occasion, but I might actually be more of a fan of Darius' solo work, Back To Then in particular. The new country stuff is different, probably an acquired taste since I'm more partial to 70s-80s country, but its alright.

/so what

I just want to know when Dave and Hootie switched traded bands.

I quite liked their first album. It wasn't exactly deep, but it had a bunch of catchy, hummable tunes.

I don't get all the hate for mind candy. There's nothing wrong with Hootie, Survivor and John Grisham books, so long as you accept them for what they are: light entertainment.

deevo 2008-12-17 09:59:50 PM
Ah dammit, I wrote in my column for wrapping up 2008 that they had broken up and so it would now be even more rude than ever to call Darius "Hootie."

The 90's---the decade that gave us artists who produced one overplayed/overhyped (though not necessarily without merit) album and then found themselves on the road to relative obscurity, making way for the next "big thing". Live, Alanis Morrisette, and Blues Traveller come to mind.

My friends and I call it "Frampton Comes Alive" syndrome.

Don't forget Matchbox 20

Hootie and The Blowfish isn't really bad as much as they are just extremely bland, yet extremely popular for some inexplicable reason. Putting them on par with creed, Nickelback, Matchbox 20, though, is more than a bit unfair.

A few years ago I went to see Django Walker play, and he opened for Hootie. It was the first time I'd seen them in about 15 years and they were still good. Darius played a few country songs and I was really impressed. I hear his country album is good but haven't checked it out yet.

shivashakti : You're either very young, or you were somewhere outside of America during the mid-90s.

I'm turning 31, I was in the US in the 90s, and I can't remember a hootie and the blowfish song.

/I remember what their music sounds like, and I know I would recognize a particular song of theirs if I heard it. But I can't remember the title of the song or any of the lyrics off the top of my head.

/edit, looked at their discography, nope. Turns out the song I thought was theirs was Dave Matthews.

//Was listening to Snoop Dogg, Iron Maiden, Enigma, Depeche mode, Cypress Hill, Outkast etc in the 90s

I was in high school from 93-97, and had a graduating class of 972. I can honestly say one thing: In this time frame, not a single person I knew of was listening to anything even remotely popular at the time.

The hipster kids were listening to Fugazi, PJ Harvey and Liz Phair. I was listening to Pantera (sort of mainstream at the time), Slayer and other thrash bands. Everyone I knew owned both the Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump soundtracks, and those were both classic rock collections.

I don't know who in the hell was listening to Hootie back in the day b/c that should have been in my age group's wheelhouse at the time.

Same goes for Alanis too.
