(Think Progress) Interesting Newsweek asks "cultural critics" what one work of culture this decade most exemplifies what it is like to be alive in the age of George Bush. If you guess the fracking answer, then you're a toaster and should be airlocked   (yglesias.thinkprogress.org) divider line 79

Idiocracy, with all its flaws, is, sadly, the answer. This administration, its supporters, and the demographics to which it has catered, represent the absolute lowest common denominator of this country's population, and exemplify the celebration and exaltation of ignorance that are satirized in the movie.

Not bad analysis by TFA, but for one teeny, tiny, teeeeeny little point: Adama is competent to lead humanity through a crisis.

co-conspirator [TotalFark] 2008-12-17 07:09:56 PM
Here's a "for instance": after the Cylons attacked, Adama didn't go to war against the Belcerebron people of Kakrafoon Kappa.

Other examples may apply.

I agree. After the end of Season 3 I thought, "OK, this is it. One season left. Get ready for nonstop ass-kicking." Instead it's been more soap opera. I still have hope.

Anyway, for a song I'd say its TV on the Radio's 'DLZ', hands down:
Congratulations on the mess you made of things;
On trying to reconstruct the air and all that brings.
And oxidation is the compromise you own
But this is beginning to feel like the dog wants her bones saved

You force your fire then you falsify your deeds
Your methods dot the disconnect from all your creeds
And fortune strives to fill the vacuum that it feeds
But this is beginning to feel like the dog's lost her lead

This is beginning to feel like the long
winded blues of the never
This is beginning to feel like it's curling up slowly
and finding a throat to choke

This is beginning to feel like the long
winded blues of the never
Barely controlled locomotive consuming the picture
and blowing the crows, the smoke

This is beginning to feel like the long
winded blues of the never
Static eplosion devoted to crushing the broken
and shoving their souls to ghost

Eternalised. Objectified.
You set your sights so high.
But this is beginning to feel like
the bolt busted loose from the lever

Never you mind
Death professor
Your structure's fine
My dust is better
Your victim flies so high
All to catch a bird's eye view of who's next

Never you mind
Death professor.
Love is life,
My love is better.
Eyes could be the diamonds
Confused with who's next

Never you mind
Death professor.
Your shocks are fine,
My struts are better.
Your fiction flies so high,
Y'all could use a doctor
Who's sick, who's next?

Never you mind
Death professor.
Electrified, my love is better
It's crystallized, so'm I.
All could be the diamond
Fused with who's next

This is beginning to feel like the dawn of a loser forever
This is beginning to feel like the dawn of a loser forever
This is beginning to feel like the dawn of a loser forever

Well.. if democrats didn't support the some of the culture defined in Idiocracy through welfare and such, maybe some of those people would die off.

I should clarify by pointing out that I'm not just talking about welfare - the corporate welfare symbolized by Brawndo fits in that category too.

JerseyTim: I disagree with Idiocracy's basic premise that society is becoming dumber.

Not really. If anything, our growing understanding of nutritional requirements and basic education are making us smarter.

Every culture has bemoaned that the newest generation is dumber, less civilized, and worse. Maybe the American Empire is in decline. Maybe. But Humanity is not, and preaching that we're going towards a future where stupid people will reign supreme is, well, stupid.

Really? Every major, and reasonable, metric of education and general knowledge says otherwise. Of course, we are quickly moving the goalposts to cover up our failures.
