come on rusty, you misread the headline. it is trying to say that now that johnny cash is dead, columbia records can finally reveal itself to be none-other dumping-expensive hippie producer, rick rubin.

/i for one was not surprised by the unmasking

Seems Columbia may be a tad miffed at his penchant for producing hit albums for other record companies, and failing to produce hits for Columbia.

Shocking.

Recent example of an album produced by Rubin for a record company other than Columbia (in this case, Warner Bros. Records):

i haven't heard the album, but from what i've read, the production is supposed to be the only really bad thing about it.

Yeah, but you can... you know... "find" remixed copies, and that's what you ought to be doing to obtain Metallica albums.

I must be the only one who likes the production (it may be optimized for iPod play; have not listened to it anywhere else) except for a tuning down of the bass tracks. Tru don't deserve that!

/ilstened it again for the 1st time in a few weeks. Still like it & like dude ^^ above, their best since JUSTICE

Rick Rubin is OVER RATED. One good Chili Peppers record out of five doesn't make him a god. He's also helped weezer put out some craptastic records in the past few years.

Yeah that's pretty well how I feel about it. The songs are pretty good, the mix, not so much. I do still enjoy it.

I'll always hate Rick Rubin for suggesting to Chris/Rich Robinson and Steve Gorman that The Black Crowes original name should be Kobb Kounty Krowes.

That's right, a white southern band with the initials KKK. Perfect. Great work Rick Rubin.

Hey, I'm not saying the Black album wasn't good - it was, but Justice was just a smidgen better.

Kinda like asking, "Who's better, Bill Brasky or Mike Ditka?" Let it simply be said that both kick lots of ass, and the decision would probably have to be decided on a coin toss anyway.

The producer doesn't do the mastering, sheesh. His job is to basically crack the whip and tell the band when they're not performing up to scratch.

In other words, you can blame Rick Rubin for Death Magnetic not being another Load or St.Anger. But I doubt he had time to stick around and hear the final mix.

Rick Rubin is one of the greatest music producers of all time. They are fools for letting him go.

YonderScott 2008-12-18 08:06:14 AM
He has been working on a new project with The Avett Brothers. They are a great little acoustic band from right down the road from me. I hope to heck he doesn't mess up their sound.

Derwood 2008-12-18 08:40:09 AM
Rubin has saved more than one career in his time. His work with Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond was fantastic. He's also the most diverse producer out there in terms of who he works with. Who else can claim Run DMC, Slayer, Justin Timberlake, Johnny Cash, Danzig and Dixie Chicks on their resume?

Dan Swanö (new window) and Peter Tägtgren (new window) are the best producers these days anyhow.

/yes, they mostly produce metal albums.
//said albums they produce sound amazing however.

No, it's the mastering that's bad. All the dynamics were crushed by overcompression, and it sounds unnatural to the ear.

Once you've lived through/tried-your-damnedest-to-listen-to St. Anger, everything else pales in comparison as far as production techniques goes.

Death Magnetic is a damn great Metallica album. And that's something I was sure I would never say. I still refuse to see them in concert again (they might play something off St. Anger and just ruin the night for me).

Overcompression that was already in place when it got to the mastering stage. Do a little reading, and you'll find out this is all Rick Rubin's fault.

He didn't seem to bother during Stadium Arcadium.

"I'll always hate Rick Rubin for suggesting to Chris/Rich Robinson and Steve Gorman that The Black Crowes original name should be Kobb Kounty Krowes."

You may recall Rick Rubin got his start by forming a the first rap label, which was titled "Def Jam" and introducing rap into main stream culture.
To accuse him of racism is some bouffant bullshiat

Yeah, riiiiiight. He's spending money Columbia doesn't have on new offices, and working for other companies. Even Detroit automakers aren't stupid enough to put up with that kind of BS.
