It is outrageous to suggest that Hillary is in any way trying to control who takes her senate seat. We all know the when a senator vacates their seat they no longer have any say in who replaces them.

in all of this "deafening roar" for kennedy's nomination, would it be wrong for me to ask what, exactly, her qualifications for senate are?

The same as Hillary's was. She deserves it because of her last name. Some families are special and are appointed as leaders based on their blood line.

At least the people of New York got to decide they wanted that, instead of one guy at the top.

As brownsox from dailykos (I know, I know) put it: ...the son of a former State Senator and Secretary of State (Paterson) is picking between the daughter of a former president and the son of a former governor and frequently touted presidential candidate, to succeed the wife of a former president in the U.S. Senate.

What chance do mere mortals have?

The only qualifications for Senator are:

"1) each senator must be at least 30 years old, 2) must have been a citizen of the United States for at least the past nine years, and 3) must be (at the time of the election) an inhabitant of the state they seek to represent."

She meets all those to the best of my knowledge.

Kennedy is an attorney, writer, editor and serves on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations.

[edit] Law and politics
Kennedy is a member of the New York and Washington, D.C. bar associations. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Commission on Presidential Debates and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

[edit] Kennedy family legacy
Kennedy and other members of her family created the Profiles in Courage Award in 1989. The award is given to a public official or officials at the federal, state or local level whose actions best demonstrate the qualities of politically courageous leadership in the spirit of John F. Kennedy's book, Profiles in Courage.[6] In addition, Kennedy is currently president of the Kennedy Library Foundation.[5] She is also an adviser to the Harvard Institute of Politics.

[edit] Education
From 2002 through 2004 Kennedy worked as director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships for the the New York City Department of Education. The three-day-a week job paid her a salary of $1 and had the goal of raising private money for the New York City public schools.[7] In her capacity, she helped raise more than $65 million for the city's public schools.[8][5] She currently serves as one of two vice chairs of the board of directors of The Fund for Public Schools, a public-private partnership founded in 2002 to attract private funding for public schools in New York City.[9]

She can afford to bankroll her own campaign, has name recognition, can afford to bankroll her own campaign, has an ok resume, has money to afford the seat, knows the players to ask for donations from, and can afford to bankroll her own campaign.

i certainly hope her argument is not that she meets the bare minimum requirements for the job.

That is because you didn't join the local Stapler Mechanics Union 146. If you had you would be in D.C. right now looking for a place to live. Instead you chose to be an independent Stapler Contractor, so you will have to wait for the Stapler Wars to make your millions.

yeah i don't really see anything stellar in that resume, aside from the position with the DOE, but even that kind of reads like a typical socialite fundraising position.
i'm not saying she wouldn't make a good senator, i think she probably would. i'm just saying that she doesn't have much to hang her hat on from an experience standpoint.

Tom_Slick [TotalFark] 2008-12-17 10:13:46 AM
People, people, it is so simple. Ted knows he won't be around much longer, therefore he forced Obama to make Hillary his Sec. State, so he could install Caroline in her Senate seat. This was done to assure that the Frank Sinatra's involvement in JFK's assassination as a revenge killing for the CIA's assassination of Marylin Monroe will never be revealed.

thomps: i'm just saying that she doesn't have much to hang her hat on from an experience standpoint.

Look at the current senators from Utah and the Republican from Nebraska. You don't have to have experience to be elected so I don't see why you would need experience to be appointed. Especially when the person you're appointed to replace also had zero experience.

thomps [TotalFark] 2008-12-17 10:21:24 AM
7of7: and the Republican from Nebraska

chuck hagel? that guy has a resume a mile long (my home district growing up).

i agree that experience isn't necessarily a pre-requisite. but given how retarded the electorate is, wouldn't you want to take this rare opportunity to appoint someone who is eminently qualified rather than someone who is just famous?

Well look at the new senator from Virginia. Former governor and wildly popular with the voters in our state, and a known commodity. Sure, experience at elected office is not a requirement, but it does give voters something to help base their decision on. I believe someone recently said that the choice to fill a senate seat should belong to the people. I know that is not the way the laws read, but he said it anyway. I just hope that any governor facing that choice acts in the best interest of the state voters.

There's just a bit of a sour taste about these appointments with the Chicago stuff. It's good to have scrutiny, don't you think? Or would you just blindly accept whatever the governor does?

Scrutiny is fine but questioning her credentials after they've been shown to be greater than those of the person she'd be replacing has no purpose. The people who are doing it are the same people who still claim nobody can prove Obama is an American. They're just doing it because they're partisan assholes trying to stir up trouble where none exists.

And the infighting and purges have begun. It's always fun to watch the intramural bloodletting when one or the other of these leech political factions sweeps to power. Last time it was the neocons against the paleocons against the East Coast bankercons. Now it's the Chicago union mafia thugocrats against the effete Massatwosh*ts bankerlibs against the patchuli antiwar unicorns.

But first, a simple execution.

this is my point. you have a rare opportunity here to put someone in the senate who wasn't selected by a popularity contest. caroline kennedy has the political capital and financial resources to run on her own. use this opportunity to select someone who is decidedly qualified that doesn't necessarily have those resources.
