You would think that they would've added the words "barack" and "obama" to their spell-checker dictionary by now.

Or come up with something funnier than Burka Abeam if it's meant to be funny. I bet they had a spellchecker, but someone misspelled so badly that all the spellchecker could make of it was Burka Abeam. Spelling that painful reminds me of some of our headlines...

Maybe writer has him confused with Abe Beame who was NYC mayor in the 1970's : Link (new window)

I tried typing "barack obama" in MS Word (Office 2007 version), and both words showed up as misspellings. "Abeam" was one of the options offered for "obama," but I couldn't come up with any misspelling of "barack" for which "burka" was given as an option (with autocorrect turned on, it automatically changes it to "barrack"), so whoever wrote that caption must've really farked up "Barack."

abeam
Pronunciation:
\ə-ˈbēm\
Function:
adverb or adjective
Date:
circa 1836

: off to the side of a ship or plane especially at a right angle to the middle of the ship or plane's length

Obviously more of the "Obama needs to govern from the center-right" editorializing.

"Barack Obama" IS hard to spell. Give them abreak.

Britney Spear's Speculum 2008-12-17 12:08:54 AM
If it was some southern news paper, I'd say it was probably some freeper that was so use to seeing Obama as a Muslin (sic) that they didn't think there was a mistake.

Britney Spear's Speculum 2008-12-17 12:11:43 AM
They probably typed Barack Obama, spell checked the article and since Barack and Obama aren't words, it came up with the closest match "Burka" and "Abeam"

Try Burak or phonetic spellings when phrases or names have been burgled by spellcheck.

On a related note spellcheck seems to be the thing to blame for so many typographical mistakes. Whatever happened to the whole editor/human spellchecker anyways?

Doublek111 2008-12-17 12:16:00 AM
How is this headline fascist? It is simply pointing out the flub. It would be fascist if the article was insinuating anything beyond the typo. Fake fascism on fark.

Burka Abeam was the Fiscally Incautious Goth Jedi party's candidate this year. He only received one vote, which was disqualified when election officials discovered it was made by a trained chicken. Obviously the L.A. Daily News just enjoys rubbing his face in his failure. It's a bit cruel, really.

Is "burka" in the spell checker's dictionary?

Well there ARE only 11 letters in the hawaiin alphabet. True story. Arabic has like 64 counting all the dongles and crap.

I tried typing in Barack Obama in QuarkXPress (which a lot of newspapers use for doing their layouts) and Barack was suggested to be Barrack and Obama didn't have any suggestions.

/Burka wasn't even in the spellcheck either.
//Someone should try this with InDesign.

I just tried it. "Barack" corrects to "barrack" and "Obama" corrects to "abeam". "Burka" isn't even in InDesign's dictionary. I don't know how the hell they managed to do that to his first name.

Britney Spear's Speculum: If it was some southern news paper, I'd say it was probably some freeper that was so use to seeing Obama as a Muslin (sic) that they didn't think there was a mistake.

If it helps any, the newspaper (if I remember correctly, it's the one I'm thinking of that comes from the San Fernando Vallen and it hasn't changed) leaned pretty far to the right. I think it used to be called the "green sheet" because way back when the front page was printed on green paper (not that there's anything wrong with that).

This is the first time I've ever seen spellchecker blamed for getting something RIGHT and it being wrong. Usually it's the other way around. I guess next time it will be Boris Abadunov.

They've probably added "burka" to their spell checker manually; being a news outlet and all, they've probably had to use the word before.

Sometimes, I don't think they exist anymore. Or its been outsourced. Or something.

/bought too many different fiction books with atrocious editing.
//there is no way 'oic' should have made it past human editing
///read one author (not the 'oic' novel) apologies, p.o.'d because even after humans checked and rechecked, novels still came back with errors which weren't there when it went off for printing
///re, outsourcing, the phillippines are worse than India
