Me either, but I think it's pretty cool that he takes the time to sit down and answer questions the fans ask him.

Because People in power are Stupid: Axl who?

The guy who put out a record that in it's second week was down 78% in sales, barely selling a third of a million copies. Seeing as it cost (according to some reports) $13 million to make, looks like Axl will have to get a real job to pay for someone to keep up those cracker-ass-dreadlocks.

Not surprising. Both of his remaining fans had already bought it by then.

Might as well start here... You're a little coont and since you've been posting you've pretty much always been a little coont. Blind accusations and insults by an anonymous coward and whiny shiat stirrer aren't impressive or needed by anyone. Everyone else...talk with your administrator. Who wants to chat?!!

lots of well thought out responses, and it's interesting to see some perspective from his side of the fence, but I'm still not gonna buy your CD, Axl.

Not a GnR fan, but I have no ax to grind with them - I enjoyed the read.

By "enjoy the read", I was referring to the original "rant" not the story the headline was linked to.

I think it'd be pretty funny (although, not smart in the long run), to email a fansite of some famous musician, spoof the addy, and pass yourself off as said celebrity.

"When you said, "Lucy in the sky with diamonds", what were you referencing?"
"Well, you see, John actually murdered someone by throwing her out of his bedroom window. I happened to be passing underneath the window when she became airborne, her diamonds glittering across her neck. Having recently taken a handful of shrooms, the scene immediately inspired me to write the song."
*crickets*

"Kerry, how are you so metal?"
"I indulge in the finer things from life, such as pink Hello Kitty candies."
"WTF?!"

Yes. No it isn't.

if it were a no-name band it would be appropriately ridiculed as middling crap.

jake_lex [TotalFark] 2008-12-16 05:17:04 PM
This whole thing pretty much explains why it took so long to make this album. Axl Rose seems to be absolutely obsessed with his image and what others think of him. From what I've seen, the record's been ready to go several times, but got pulled after tracks leaked and were ripped. He can't abide the thought that someone out there doesn't think he's the God of Rock.

And the album we got reflects that too. Axl is so obsessed with making The Best Farking Rock Record ever that all the tracks are far too overstuffed. It tries way too hard.

I don't feel any reason whatsoever I should have to throw what I've not only worked for but fought and suffered for away because some hurt, angry, betrayed, misguided and lied to people with a lynch mob mentality, joined by others who could care less (especially in the media), enjoying the controversy and hate, choose one over the other regardless of what's right because they want what they want.

Great_Milenko 2008-12-16 05:42:39 PM
TFA makes it sound like it's some sort of unibomber-manifesto type of rambling screed, but it's really just the answers to a bunch of questions the fans asked. Taken out of context, it's a little hard to follow, but when you realize he was probably just going down the list and answering questions as they were listed, it's not that bad.

So, FAIL to EW. There are plenty of reasons to slam Axl (some of these answers are a good jumping off point), but to paint this out of context for the clueless readers of your magazine is a disservice.

Not the first time he's done something like this. Granted, the previous instance was before the age of highly populated internet discussion boards.

zvoidx 2008-12-16 06:28:27 PM
I asked this in another Chinese Democracy thread...

I was wondering, does anyone know the deal with what Guns 'N Roses and Geffen Records got from Best Buy exclusivity?

How much they did they get up front/were guaranteed? (Or maybe what a deal like that typically entails with other bands?)

So, this holiday shopping season, someone is at Circuit City won't be able to pick up a copy of the CD.. that's got to a million sales right there across the country. All of the other major stores/record chains; Walmart, etc.. all of the Mom&Pop stores can't either..

Man, that seems like alot of sales to be missing out on... Would also seem to, if sold anywhere to keep it up on the Billboard charts and perpetuate itself as something to be desired from other buyers...

All this, and the music is really decent. They would have hit it out of the park if sold everywhere, it seems...

Listen to him - he apparently knows WTF he's talking about! =)

It's just stupid - that NPR thread indicates that as a group, we aren't nearly as musically retarded as a group as to limit the green threads to shiat that has been discussed to death.

The deal must have been enough to recoup most of the cash. Best buy bought like 3 million copies of it so at around $3 a pop thats very close to the production costs. Probably paid more than that.

Best buy's terrible marketing is what killed CD before it even came out. Had it been released everywhere and properly marketed it would have killed it.
there are still tons of people (GNR fans or not) who didn't know there was a new GNR album!

Thanks for explaining that...

Makes sense..bad marketing. I see you're saying to cover the costs so that there is no risk involved. And, for all that the record company knew..the CD could have been a dud.

Still...it was "Guns 'N Roses" and it was a highly anticipated album.
Off the top of my head, other stores it could have been sold at (during the holiday season and after): Walmart, Circuit City, Virgin, Meijer, Walgreen, Target, KMart, independently owned record stores...

Plus all of the online retailers like Amazon, Tower Records, et al..

Even if the album did suck, which it doesn't, there would have been a bunch of people buying it as a present just because it's the new Guns 'N Roses.

/Easy to for me to say these things since I'm not investing x millions of dollars

It's not selling well because:

1. You can only get it at one store (how STUPID can he be?)
2. It's not Guns N' Roses

Well they did get a lot of money for that exclusive but it was stupid, they should have allowed it at other stores where no BB were around.

Every song I hear I almost instantly wonder what slash would have done, this album would have been a lot better if slash had played on it, quite possibly the best album of the decade. There are flashes of what could have been but then the shiatty players fall back into that farking industrial sound and kills any cohesiveness of the songs. Get over it axl, that style was popular 15 years ago and is long gone, hell trent cant even get a hit with it and he made it popular!

Suck up to slash, izzy, and the rest of the band to make a good version of those songs, GnR was a blues rock band and a damn fine one.

You've obviously not listened to it, considering there is only one song that could remotely be considered vaguely industrial sounding.

Geffen is a farking idiot for doing this.

That's the biggest farking problem here. I'd buy the farking CD but there isn't a best buy within 75 miles of where I live. Most of Axl's biggest fans are small town dirt rockers. Best Buy is basically for the suburbs and college towns.

If he wanted to do an exclusive deal he should have done WalMart like ACDC did. Best Buy is too farking small.
