What about From Montreal?

You can't compare Arcade Fire and Radiohead. Although subby would know that if he wasn't busy listening to his Daughtry CD's.

HulkHands: From Montreal

They're from Atlanta.

What I got from Neon Bible; "Hey, check this out, we have this really big organ to play with! No really, it's an actual church organ, and we're going to fill a bunch or tracks with it. Did we mention about the organ?"

Kind of reminded me of Rush and their mid-80's obsession with the synth.

that's all well and good, but when is it going to be available in stores nationwide?

/ loves "funeral"
// likes "neon bible". most of the songs are good/great, tho i still hate "windowsill" and maybe one other...
/// btw, does anybody have that EP they put out a while ago? if so, how is it?
//// man, i wish i went to that concert they had in my city in, on the "Funeral" tour, sometime in 2004...

How the hell can you compare Arcade Fire with Radiohead? Even if Arcade Fire had the same talent level, their songs sound in no way similar.

/not hating on Arcade Fire

I dislike Radiohead, but think Arcade Fire is good.
Doesn't mean I'm insane.

"Getting" music is totally bullshiat. Some songs resonate with people that don't with others. There is nothing to "get".

Get over your complex that anyone who doesn't share your taste in melodic sound wave arrangements is a moron.

Sorry, I was just being snarky. I actually love OK Computer because it isnt like the rest of Radioheads discography, but I would definately classify both bands as an overall "meh" to my tastes.

Montrose 2008-12-16 07:06:44 PM
of Montreal was so named because the lead singer had a failed romance with a girl from Montreal. Or at least, that's one version of it. Being from Montreal myself, and knowing a little about the local French-Canadian girls, I can see how one of them could mess up a guy enough to name his band after the incident.

Arcade Fire deserves respect just for their elevator performance of Neon Bible:

Normally I wouldn't drop in on a music thread just to hate on a band... but goddamn the Arcade Fire is crappy.

I saw them at Coachella a couple years ago and couldn't believe I was watching such a shiatty band on such a large stage.

Ugly Baby Judges You 2008-12-16 08:10:37 PM
I really dug "Funeral", partly because a girl I was dating at the time put one of their songs on a mix cd for me...I know, I know...

I like sad-sounding music though, and Funeral was pretty sad. Never got into them other than that.

I'll admit, I tried to listen to it. Turned off 2 songs in. It really is unrepentant garbage.

submitter sounds like a fag.

canada sucks and their collective musical output ranges from embarrasing to meh. arcade fire are like every other canadian band - good at ripping off american music. I'll take The farking Boss over some trifling indie posturing and dramatic yelping anyday.

uPTheme 2008-12-16 09:05:15 PM
I used to really like Arcade Fire, until I realized they're just a ripoff of Echo and the Bunnymen. Still good music, though, as evidenced by this (new window) cover of "The Guns of Brixton." Bad. Ass.

Stay Cool Babylon 2008-12-16 09:05:18 PM
Hey, I like both Neon Bible and Funeral. But then again, I'm not cool. I think. I dunno. Something like that. But yeah, I like Arcade Fire. And I generally dislike bands that the so-called 'indie' music press fellates so brazenly, especially when they're still, like, unknown, man. Not sure how it is now, but for a month or so there you couldn't bludgeon a hipster without him trying to tell you about Arcade Fire.

Oh, and add another post to the "wtf, comparing them to Radiohead?" crowd.

I like 'em, even though I keep thinking "Eddie and the Cruisers","On The Dark Side" when I hear them. Must be the slap back echo or something.

As for being compared to Radiohead, really? How so?

"Neon Bible" is as different from "In Rainbows" as different can be.

They are both good in their own ways, IMHO.

"No Cars Go" is really catchy and sticks with you more than "Weird Fishes" for instance, but they both are good songs and impressive--at least to me.

You like Springsteen, huh? Man. I was reading something he was saying the other day. He had this band open for him, he loves them, they're his favorite modern band. He's even covered a few of their songs and played duets with them, and ...

Oh, shiat. Nevermind. They're the Arcade Fire.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were mid-concert, when unbeknownst to the audience, on walked Canadian rockers Arcade Fire to play a few tunes with the Boss and his Band. According to Springsteen's website, the Arcade Fire joined the Boss in performing "State Troopers", and the E Street boys returned the favor by chiming in on Arcade's smash hit "Keep the Car Running."

OH SNAP!
OUCH!

Everything you've heard about their live show is absolutely true. The whole atmosphere of it is just incredible, and its helped by how anthemic (I'm fairly sure that's not a real word, but you know what I mean) many of their songs are. It's great being there with 10,000 other people singing right along with them. It's just an amazing communal experience because its not like seeing a bigger band and everyone singing along to their big chart topping hit, it feels like their songs were written to be this big, cathartic group experience. And I love the fact that they have (or had, not sure if they still do it) a guy or two whose basic job is to run around banging the shiat out of his drum/tambourine/the helmet on another member's head/anything else he can find (new window). When I saw them at the Greek in Berkeley he climbed the scaffolding on the side and did it from there for a bit. I've seen them twice and both were by far the best live shows I've ever been to. Also, LCD Soundsystem was boring as fark live, but a lot of that was probably because the crowd was pretty indifferent to them through most of their set.

One of my biggest regrets was being too late to buy tickets back when Funeral first came out and they were touring smaller venues with Wolf Parade opening for them. That would've been incredible.

Agreed. The first time I saw them was at Lollapolooza in 2005, when my friends dragged me to their stage. I was in awe.
