critical acclaim for 'third'? am i the only one that thought the album was sub-par compared to all their other releases?

Sub-par? It was terrible in comparison.

Though "Dummy" was really trip-hoppy,
The self-titled disc was just sloppy.
The aptly-named "Third"
Was an audio turd.
The fourth will be number three's copy.

They should really consult My Bloody Valentine for advice on how to get something recorded and released in a timely manner.

Yes; it was much better than the self-titled disc. I really like a lot of the tracks off Third.

/I also like the band Broadcast and their electro-psych-rock style, so that may have something to do with it.

Is it acceptable to seriously dislike Portishead? I'm already not hip, if that helps the analysis.

Nope. It wasn't that great, not bad, but definitely not their best.

Roseland NYC Live is my personal favorite.

This is why I still haven't listened to it. I don't want my memories tainted.

i personally liked the album Third a lot. very haunting. i was glad that is was not a repeat of previous stuff. i also have very eclectic tastes and am happy when a band goes in a new territory and makes something pleasing to my audio palette.

Pretty much this. One of the main reason I stop listening to bands is when every one of their albums start to sound pretty much the same. Experimentation is key, it may not always work out, but it's always appreciated.

I've never liked Portishead, and think Third is amazing. I listen to it more than my partner who was the one who bought it.

sonicfluid 2008-12-16 05:15:43 PM
I liked PNYC best. I have it on DVD and CD and both versions are great. Third was okay, but to me anyway it just doesn't rate in comparison to PNYC. Beth's voice was bang on (and she actually sounds better than she does on the studio versions of the tracks off the self titled), the live drumming went perfectly with the sampled bits, and somehow they actually managed to make both symphonic instruments and turn tableism work together.

That's the only one I've heard. I'm afraid to listen to anything else.

Roseland was damn near a perfect live album. I liked Third and will wait around for the next 10 years for the next one.

/Out of Season w/ Rustin Man was good too.

I'd be careful about taunting the Fark massive. You never know who will pop out of the woodwork.

/Just sayin'.

Quiet. They're listening.

Dear Portishead,
Nobody loves you.
It's true.

Stonerface 2008-12-16 09:08:00 PM
Third definitely isn't the same as their last albums so its hard to say which is actually better. I didn't like it at first but that's because I was hoping for more of what Beth has already been writing, but any band that doesn't evolve their sound over time sucks horribly, end of story. Its hard to compare something new and experimental with music you've been listening to for over 10 years. Third really grows on you if you give it a chance, there is a lot of variety. That being said, the song machine gun is definitely the diarrhea of the album. I can't listen to it all the way through without getting a headache. I'm excited to see what the next album brings, I'm sure it won't disappoint.

If musicians didn't push boundaries and experiment with their sound, everyone's favourite music wouldn't exist.

I can't stand them. I'm a huge fan of most of the mid-late 90's wave of trip-hop, et al. But Portishead is way too farking sonically irritating, IMO. But hey, I also have an asshole.

I'd actually be curious to know what Portishead fans and haters think of Cinematic Orchestra. I consider them the finest in the genre.

There are a lot of female vocal/downtempo acts that are far more compelling than Portishead. They make me yawn.

Third gets my vote for most over-rated album of the year.

Don't get me wrong, I like it and I give the band credit for not making yet another copy of Dummy (who really needs another version of this 15 years later?), but in some spots it definitely sounded way too much like a band trying a bit too hard to distances themselves from their past work.

And even though I like the track, We Carry On is basically a remake of Silver Apples' "Gypsy Love".

I'm also a big Broadcast fan. That's two of us, I guess.

Portishead's first two were both great, atmospheric records. Third is OK. Better than "meh", but not awesome, either. I fully encourage them to retreat and regroup for Fourth.

/Hooverphonic and Zero7 are also two in my hot rotation right now.

Eshy 2008-12-17 10:59:57 AM
Third is a serious sit down, put on the headphones, and listen to all the way through record. It demands to be paid attention to. If you don't, you lose out on the nuances and you lose out on one of the greatest records this year.

/owns two of the collector's edition

Walt_Jizzney: Make is sound like Dummy, or GTFO.

Yes, bands should just constantly put out the same song over and over again. I heard a great band I think you would like. I think they were called Nickelback.

/Thinks Third is an incredible album
//hates bands that become stagnant

Learn to appreciate other people's opinions. I love Portishead, got into Dummy when it came out, got the self titled when it came out, same thing with PNYC and Third. Of the 4 releases I think PNYC was the best, followed by Dummy, then the self titled and then Third. It's not that I can't or won't 'appreciate good music' it's that I have an opinion which is not that same as yours, boo hoo.

Without stepping up and saying who any of these 'more compelling' acts are no less. Well done. Maybe reverbblue and Boogaloo Shrimp can hang out and hate on everything together this weekend or something.

No, my wife caught one of their songs from this album tonight on Sirius / XM / whatever the station is now (old 'left of center' channel) and made me change the channel. "This is awful," she said. This coming from a person that liked their previous stuff.

I absolutely love 'Third'. If I wanted to listen to something that sounded just like 'Dummy'...well, I'd just listen to 'Dummy'.

I bought "Third" on vinyl and wasn't impressed. Nothing compares to "strangers" and "music to fark to".

ZombieStreetCred 2008-12-18 10:57:00 PM
Yo man, their next album better not be titled "Fourth". PLEASE come up with a more inspired title. I liked their latest album and my favourite song was "Machine Gun".
/Don't care if you disagree with my opinion.
