Jimmie Vaughan belongs nowhere near srv or a guitar for that matter.

I remember when this was on TV, back in the mid 80's. I think it was a show about the jazz festival in New Orleans, if I recall correctly.

I remember my Mom really thinking it was funny, those two guys wailing away at that guitar.

Very cool...

But look at Stevie's hands next to Jimmy's... you can see the power in them.

It looks like Terrell Owens standing next to Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Except for the fact that Jimmie gave Stevie his first guitar lessons.

And always said that Jimmie was his biggest inspiration while playing.

the beatles were inspired by elvis. i fail to see yalls point here.

Greatness. The best album either ever did was the Brothers album that ended with the instrumental where they took turns trading & playing the same guitar. Jimmy has the rockabilly style - don't knock him. Remember, you are what you are & you is what you is.

Also, Beatles inspired as much by Buddy Holly as Elvis, Elvis just hit the charts first.

Jimmie is a phenomenal blues guitar player. He does a lot of complex stuff in a minimalist, clean approach that not everyone appreciates, whereas Stevie was all about theatrics and showmanship.

"(Jimmie's) unbeatable when it comes to the blues. He just plays it like it's supposed to be played." - Buddy Guy

Uhm, yeah, I'm going to go with that guy's opinion when it comes to blues guitar.

Jimmie is a good guitar player.

He's not as his brother was, but he's still a very good player.

Ok, ANY CD you released that sold ANY copies that I could find without an electron microscope.

Happy?

I agree with ya. One of the best shows I saw was a few years back when Jimmy opened up for Bonnie Raitt.

I love SRV, but I tend to like his acoustics better than his electric or studio performances. I love how he plays a bass and melody at the same time while muting a mock percussion. He is great, there is no denying.
Here is my favorite performance (new window)

Jimmie is really good as well, there is no doubt. That double necked performance wasnt really much. You can tell it's improvised as he just walks the blues scale at the 1-4th frets but it's nice either way. You think AMAZING guitarists just bust out amazing solo's without rehersal? No. If there is a on-the-spot solo, it is always scales/licks they already know tossed together with a little theory.
And before you say it, yes I am a professional blues guitarist with albums.

Justin king, is just getting by because of youtube stardom with other guitarists. There are many better tapping guitarists out there and in my opinion the like-named kaki-king (new window) is even better. Lets not even mention the god-like Stanley Jordan (new window)

Seems like the newer tappers out there just get by because they either use a strange tuning or their music just has no feel or order. Or a repeating bassline. If the bass repeats then I'm sorry, they arent playing with both hands, muscle memory in one hand and playing with the other is not an excuse.

I grew up with him playing at the family get-togethers. It hurt hard when he was killed because I was young and did not bother to pay attention when he was playing. We have recordings and they are treasured. I try to remind my kids to pay attention to things that happen around them in life because you never know.

Have you ever picked up a guitar? (it was the whole playing bass and melody, that outed you. If SRV blows you away, then, wow, this will reset time for you. KELLY JOE PHELPS (new window))
After being around the instrument for going on 25 years, I have never heard a less musical description in my life.

Albums of what?

mahavishnunj: Jimmie Vaughan belongs nowhere near srv or a guitar for that matter.

This. Jimmy is a no-talent hack riding on his brother's coattails, who plays one lick over and over again, and badly, at that.

MFL 2008-12-17 05:03:15 PM
Anybody knocking Jimmy really doesn't "get it".

His blues style was completely different that Stevie's. He was famous before Stevie with the Fabulous T-birds. Stevie probably would have never been who he was without Jimmy. He probably would have ended up being been a small town drunk with an enormous amount of talent that would never be discovered. (they are all over the place)

Jimmy helped get his foot in the door, not the other way around. The Fabulous T-Birds were hugely popular in Texas and Stevie made his living opening up for them when they toured the state. Jimmy got SRV's foot in the door, which he blew open and completely revitalized the blues. SRV was amazing and IMHO the best there ever was. But Jimmy was no slouch.

The tone he gets from his finger picking style is as much of a signature as BB Kings vibrato. Yes it's simpler, yes its not "show" that SRV did with every solo that blew your mind, but it fits his music. That's what makes a blues guitar player. Any idiot can learn the scales. Only a few can make the scales talk to you.

He's not a guitar hero, he's just a very good Texas Blues musician.
