Heard of most of them, own half, off to listen to the others and decide if I want them, too.

Own one of them, would listen to two others, heard of a 4th. And that's it. Am I really out of touch with current music, or are those a bunch of unknowns?

I've heard of most of 'em. Put the Rush albums away for a month, subby. There's a lot of great music out there.

yet another reason i prefer "sound opinions" to "all songs considered:" all songs considered put the new my morning jacket album as one of the years best, while sound opinions rightfully called it one of the year's biggest turkeys (one they were highly anticipating but ended up hating).

I've listened to zero of those songs and heard of a view of them, but then I'm not old, very out-of-touch, and listen to about 10 artists so who cares?

Here are some of my faves from 2008, in no particular order.

I don't feel very original because most of them are on other peoples lists, too:

TV On The Radio - "Dear Science"
Calexico - "Carried To Dust"
Beck - "Modern Guilt"
Elbow - "The Seldom Seen Kid"
Supergrass - "Diamond Hoo Ha"
The Kooks - "Konk"
MGMT - "Oracular Spectacular"
Dr. Dog - "Fate"
The Breeders - "Mountain Battles"
Oasis - "Dig Out Your Soul" (I know, I know, but I like the record, OK?)
She & Him - "Volume One"

--And these guys I wouldn't normally mention with the above, but they have some catchy songs, and I have to give credit to Local Band that Made it (somewhat) Big in '08:
Cloud Cult - "Feel Good Ghosts" (Minneapolis)

The Onanist [TotalFark] 2008-12-16 12:24:00 AM
big_pth: Heard of most of them. Listened to several of them today alone.

This.

Of course I listen to The Current which just happens to be the local Minnesota Public Radio station and they play all of these artists on a daily basis.

TV on the Radio is awesome. Beck never disappoints (IMO). Portishead is still around? Going to have to get Conor Oberst's cd, loves Bright Eyes

I have 20 of the 25.

This Fleet Foxes stuff seems really bland. Am I missing something? I mean it's cool that it sounds sort of like Simon & Garfunkel records, but ... ?

Let's be honest... Simon & Garfunkel are kinda bland too. They're just farking awesome musicians. (Well, Paul is.) I think it's the same thing with Fleet Foxes - you don't have to spit blood and play power chords at 200 bpm. They're a little boring, sure, but they write good songs, and it takes all kinds.

On a different topic, I've heard of 15 of the 25, but only because I started listening to my local indie rock station this year. I know this is an NPR list, but damn, that is some wussy music. Good every now and then, but you've got to temper it with some hard rock.

Professor Fate 2008-12-16 01:54:06 AM
The list needs Raphael Saadiq.

Pesky_Humans [TotalFark] 2008-12-16 01:57:56 AM
This list, like most top whatever lists, ignores a lot of where the real fresh sounds are coming from. This is to be expected, sadly, even from NPR listeners, who by and large are a lot more adventurous than the average Farker. Sure I'm talking shiat but it's true.

This isn't trolling for you guys that want to discuss GNR, Metallica, and AC/DC ad nauseum. But for those of you interested in challenging yourselves with some great non-mainstream shiat, check out the following artists who released true heat in '08:

Squarepusher
Flying Lotus
Hudson Mohawke
Blu & Exile
Vibe Squad
Neil Landstrumm
Tipper
Prefuse 73
Del the Funkee Homosapien
Ting Tings
Kelly Polar
Daedelus
Samiam
Edit
Cool Kids

I hate to say it, but the new Bloc Party record is hot too.

If you like what Girl Talk is doing, check out Ludachrist and Kill the Noise, both of whom are doing that crazy mash-up shiat way better and not so gimmicky.

This all, of course, in my not so humble opinion. So much great music dropped in 2008 that I can't wait for 2009.

Disgod 2008-12-16 01:59:23 AM
I'm glad Portishead's new album got on the list. It's a great album, and an excellent comeback album after not releasing anything for a decade.

Bah! I'm so sick of look-how-adorable-I-am Jenny Lewis and Kimya Dawson is-so-cool-because-her-music-was-in-Juno.

Okkervil River is fantastic.

But Pop Lie is totally not the best song on the album.

Lost Coastlines blows it away. Twice. With both hands tied behind its back.

I need to listen to the new Portishead. List is lacking Amanda Palmer, The Presets, and the US releases (finally) of IAMX.

DemonEater 2008-12-16 03:48:59 AM
Haven't heard of most of them, and after listening to them, I decided it was for a reason.

I can forgive the boring slow ballad-y ones because I just prefer stuff that's more up-tempo, but as for the rest, damn, what happened to coherent songs?

You know the ones, where the lyrics were set to a catchy melody, and it was backed up by instruments all playing along with each other. I just don't get this "everyone kind of does their own thing" sort of music.

All I can say is, NPR's listeners have terrible taste.

MikoSquiz 2008-12-16 03:51:37 AM
Yeah, I suggest you click on those little 'play' links there for the ones you haven't heard. Most of that's some pretty good music, if you like melodies and stuff.

If you're all about the brutal blasting metal noise or fat funky beats, not so much.

1. 'When I Was Cruel' Elvis Costello
2. 'Very Best Of' J.J. Cale

4. 'Essential Steve Earle' Steve Earle
5. 'Psyence Fiction' U.N.K.L.E.
