While I'm happy for both Tina Fey and Sarah Palin for topping the list, I find this particular quotation needs an addendum:

"There are no atheists in foxholes and there are no libertarians in financial crises." - Krugman, in an interview with Bill Maher on HBO's "Real Time," broadcast Sept. 19.

...except on Fark.com

DamnYankees: Really? "Yes we can" doesn't make it?

yeah but that's not as much a quote as it is a slogan.

"Anyone who says we're in a recession, or heading into one - especially the worst one since the Great Depression - is making up his own private definition of "`recession.'" - commentator Donald Luskin, the day before Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy, The Washington Post, Sept. 14.

sage advice from the NRO's resident financial expert

I dunno. Seems like an odd distinction. It made its fame during his NH primary loss as part of his concession speech.

You actually appear to be a dichotomous pair of lovely pussies.

But then again, you did say you were from Southeast Asia, so both descriptions could be accurate.

i agree that it was a really important phrase this year, especially considering the deafening pitch the "yes we can" chant got to by november. i'm just assuming that the editors had to use a lot of focused rules to cull away the mountains of stupid quotes that pile up in an election year.

5. "The fundamentals of America's economy are strong." - McCain, in an interview with Bloomberg TV, April 17.

I think I'd put this at #1...I am glad this whopper got recognition:

4. "It's not based on any particular data point, we just wanted to choose a really large number." - a Treasury Department spokeswoman explaining how the $700 billion number was chosen for the initial bailout, quoted on Forbes.com Sept. 23.

Headline: Palin tops memorable quotes in 2008

"I can see Russia from my house" Tina Fey.

Though it should come to no surprise that many well informed and intelligent Obama voters thought Palin actually did say that, but I'm sure Saturday Night Live never considered that, oh no, definately not.

Considering he's piggybacking on a much older, much better quote I don't think that's a particularly worthy one :/.

She's nothing that special, so far as I've seen. Wouldn't kick her out of bed, but she's not that great.

/7 out of 10 on the attractiveness scale.

bassett: "No libertarians during a financial crisis"?

BULL

My dad's a strong libertarian his whole life, gone in and out of "crises" all his life, to some degree. It's a lifelong philosophy, and most people smart enough to consider libertarianism one way or the other are smart enough to rely on themselves through a bad financial situation. Doesn't exactly mesh with "OH GOD DON'T LET THEM FARKING KILL ME OH GODOHGODOHGOD"

That actually upsets me.

I thought that they actually did some number crunching to get that number, not this bullshiat.

Christ. They should be at least trying to get a reasonable estimate, try to make the bailout as small as possible or something.

I dunno, maybe I just suck at economics
