Their embarrassing first album was full of half-hearted attempts at love songs and teenage angst.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, summarized in 30 words:

"Puerto Rican kid in NYC drops acid, vandalizes subway station, gets arrested, gets bailed out by his brother, solicits three prostitutes, gets arrested, never recovers from acid. Or something."

And prog lyrics only get worse from there.

But the music?

Yes - Relayer.
Probably the most insane album I have ever heard, and I have heard many things you really do not want to hear.

and/but... prog is back, wrapped up in post-ironic IDM but all the same it is back - see Squarepusher and the Just A Souvenir album.

I'll do you a few words better:
"Half-breed kid deals with sexuality and the role of masturbation in his life as he slowly comes to grips with his own individuality and mortality over the span of a day."
Gabriel even claimed it had a lot to do with masturbation and fantasizing.

"The Carpet Crawlers" FTW

I remember reading in The Book Of Genesis [a great book, btw] that the band suffered from writer's block during the writing sessions for "Selling England by the Pound". The were holed up in some old house for months and months trying to write.
And lo-and-behold, they wrote some of the very best stuff [music, and lyrics wise] of the Gabriel-Genesis years [except for "more fool me". i hate that song, i think it does not belong].

Ignorant McNugget
AH HA!
I always had an inkling that The Lamia were prostitutes!

Here's my take on parts of the story:
- The Lamia are prostitutes [props to Ignorant]
- The Slippermen are what becomes of the poor guys who have sex with the Lamia. ['his skin's all covered in slimy lumps', etc. .... possibly contracted STD's?]
- brother John doesn't actually "exist". he is a split personality of Rael.
- it's all a dream.
- it's all a drug trip. [props to Ignorant...]

interesting note: on the vinyl version of TTLDB, on the inside of the cover, the right side, after the credits, the text of the story begins again. and it ends, at the bottom of the page, with the line "each time he dares". Maybe this is a clue that Rael is doomed to repeat his journey or "trip" [or different variations of the journey itself] over and over again [anywhere from a few times --- until he gets stuff right? until he chooses the right things and paths and decisions? --- to infinity]

["Two roads diverged in a wood...."]

p.s. "Trespass" is rather underrated. It's a great album.
It's still one of my very favourites. possibly because it was one of my very first PG era Genesis albums.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-12-14 10:48:37 PM
oh
also
"Trick of the Tail" is a very strong album as well. Every song is great.
Phil used to be a freakin great drummer in the early to late 70's.
Nursery Cryme thru to Wind and Wuthering.
His drumming for brand x was unbelievable, their debut album.
Hacket should've gotten more songs in on "Wind and Wuthering".
Too much Banks on it.
anybody have " a curious feeling" ?
but then again... maybe not... lol i HATE his solo album "Please don't touch" which came out just after "wind".
His first solo album is very good tho... almost [musically] like a lost PG or PC era genesis album...

Forget all that and see Peter Gabriel's solo stuff, 1-4 and Up. Yea Up- his most recent record. Amazing lyrical content. I Grieve and No Way Out off Up are proof that there is good rock music available for adults.

Now that I think about it, Nick Cave and Tom Waits do it too. Music for adults. Just because people get older does not mean we don't want to listen to decent music. And you don't have to look back 25+ years to see that all these guys are still relevant.

'Genesis: Chapter & Verse' is a good book too. Lots of pictures and mini-interviews with band members and associates.

There's a 'bootleg' out there called 'Selling England By The Session' which is basically a bunch of audio recorded during the sessions of Selling England By The Pound. Has a lot of instrumental and alternate takes of songs, and includes some 'discussion' of the arrangements.

Definitely worth searching for on a torrent search engine, since none of the material has been officially released.

he was good on more than the first brand x. hes on alot more of their great shiat than that, especially the live one 'livestock'.

even though i think hackett always was and will be a sh*tty guitarist, he could write some rad stuff. 'voyage of the acolyte' is as good as any genesis record.

Remember that Collins at one point was in Genesis, Brand X, playing with Los Fabulous Jacuzzis, and playing on Another Green World.

Pretty impressive, truly, despite how self-deprecating/self-loathing he's become now. When he climbs behind the drum kit, I wonder if he thinks, "Finally. I'm talented."

"spot the pigeon"
i remember that EP... saw it once in a record shop... coloured vinyl... $10=$15 or so...
i didn't know it was at 45 rpm, so i put it on 33.3
phil sounded a bit like a deep voiced Peter lol
i thought "that's funny, i thought Phil was on this one!"
but yeah i quickly found out my mistake. lol boy was my face red! lol
so i put it to 45rpm... and it was ok/good... not worth $10 - $15 bucks tho...
were they out-takes from an album or two?
wait... didn't it have "paperlate" on it? that's a catchy song!
"paper late, paper late.... there's no-one on the line.... cuz no news is good news, etc."
dammit now it's in my head!

mahavishnunj
yeah... i have "morroccan roll" [clever title, eh?] which is ok/good... not as good as the debut... and i have "livestock" tho, if you look at the credits, Phil doesn't play on all the tracks... only some. Some other guy plays on the rest of the tracks.

i'm curious to why you think Hackett is a "sh*tty" guitarist?
i personally liked him, his 70's stuff [haven't heard any 80's to present stuff, tho]
he had speed AND emotion in his playing. he did tapping.
[and lots of bending lol]

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-12-15 01:05:44 AM

1977 was much the same lol
Phil played on "before and after science" by Eno, and with Brand X [or wait, was he still with them in 1977?]
and Genesis.

who's Los Fabulous... ?

Nicely done sir. I even made the extra effort and went to the UK for his Warm Up Summer tour in the EU last year. What a great experience! So good to know he still sounds as great as he ever did.

Oh, and mahavishnunj- iirc this is not the first time you have been wrong about something around here- what's your damage anyway? Even if you did not like Peter's latest endeavors musically, there is no denying the genius that is Tony Levin and what he has done for all of PGs solo efforts. Whatever dude.

absolutely no natural feel, no technique, and i dont like tapping even when someones good at it-which he wasnt. he was a hell of a writer though, at least in the 70s.

i never said a word about PGs latest. ive not heard them and dont care to. i think the stuff hes most famous for by musicians(his first solo records)is(are?) lame. i can kind of see why people like them i guess, but i dont get the fascination. i love tony levin, AND peter gabriel. just not PGs solo stuff.

sonnyboy11: iirc this is not the first time you have been wrong about something around here

hes on everything up til 82(which i was surprised at. i didnt realize that wasnt him on 'masques', thanks wikipedia!).

dmax: Another Green World.

from what i understand, this is the record that sort of was the genesis of brand x. really interesting record, not just because of those guys.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway all takes place in Rael's mind as in a flash, at a pivotal instant in his life, he goes on an allegorical journey and learns the difference between living and merely existing.

/"The Battle of Epping Forest" is the greatest song ever.
