Damnit! Why don't I ever think of these cunning plans? I wouldn't pay for this though, I can "CrapWrap" myself, no need to pay for it.

So we're in a recession and people in Britain have money to throw at other people to badly wrap their Christmas presents?

eh... 2 years ago I asked the wrapping counter at the local mall to wrap my gifts like they would've wrapped them before taking their "gift wrapping seminar" or whatever they do to learn how to wrap.

They didn't want to do it at first, but after I explained that I wanted the gifts to be wrapped like if I had wrapped them myself, and I promised a tip, they humored me and did it.

Thing is that the couple in line behind me liked the idea and asked for the same.

It's been 2 years and they now give the option to "personalize" gifts to every consumers. They even offer some cheap paper to wrap them with these days... Next time I'll ask them to wrap my gifts in newspaper just to see if they will still do it in 2 years :)

Oddly enough, the girlfriend just recently complained that I am far more talented at wrapping presents than she is, specifically that mine come out looking almost professional while hers most assuredly do not. I find this odd, since I'm the kind of guy who doesn't mind presents "wrapped" in brown paper bags with a bit of masking tape holding the top shut.

Honestly, it's really not that hard once you realize that only the outside has to look neat and tidy. Nobody will notice if underneath the folds on the sides there's a mess of haphazard creases and eight times as much tape as is necessary.

I remember wrapping gifts for the kids at work and one of the men I worked with came by and started taking them away to wrap them "properly". So help me, he was probably the neatest gift-wrapper I'd ever seen, and I'm not that bad at it. My husband is the same way. I just leave things in the Amazon wrapping nowadays and leave it laying around where he can look at it every time he sits down for weeks.

That's the entrepreneurial spirit, right there. I wonder what crappily-rendered services I could offer. Perhaps a housecleaning service that steals all your jewelry, smokes all your dope, and leaves the place a wreck with semen stains all over the bedding.

I sense an idea forming.

I Can't Believe It's Not Better 2008-12-14 07:32:32 PM
My ex's idea of "wrapping" was to give me the gift still in the store's bag. He didn't even bother to take the receipt out of the bag. His excuse was that the wrapping was going to come right off anyway, so why bother? At least paying someone else to wrap it poorly would have shown some effort.

/the gift itself was always equally as thought out. Strike two!

That's not an "excuse", it's a perfectly valid point IMO. What is the point in wrapping something in paper that's just going to get torn right back off and thrown away? Is a crappy gift any better if it's in some pointless shiny paper, or a great gift any worse if it isn't?

That said, I usually compromise by using a nice gift bag. It looks as nice as a wrapped box, it actually serves a purpose, and the recipient can re-use it.

Why yes, I am a computer programmer, how did you know? :)

I think I'll start the "Who gives a darn?" Housekeeping service where we'll just do a really superficial job so it looks like the husband has actually made an attempt at doing some housekeeping himself. Includes fixing furniture with duct tape, leaving flecks of food on plates, missing corners when vaccuming and dusting and dressing the baby in unmatched colors.

Call it the difference between a command-line interface and a shiny GUI. Command-line is quite versatile, but the majority of people like things to look good. Even if the wrapping looks like CrapTM, it still looks better than something you grabbed on your way home from work.

Not everyone. I prefer gifts in the realm of the BSD userland instead of the pretty Windows world. Small, utilitarian packages throughout the year are much better than one big shiny package.

This. As an added bonus, oddly-shaped objects pose no wrapping difficulties if you just put them in a gift bag instead.

When our kids go to birthday parties their friend is getting a gift bag rather than wrapping paper. Every time.

I have nothing against homos, and I never said you were one. I never made any threats or engaged in "tough guy" talk so that one doesn't work either. I cant totally understand your attempts to misdirect, I would be tempted to do the same (although I would have done a better job) but if you read your posts and pretend you weren't the one typing them I bet even you would think "That dude has some chick-like qualities".

Laugh about it and say "good one!". Or you can keep digging, either way works for me.

And you are going to have to remake this sandwich, you should know I only like spicy brown mustard, this yellow shiat is redonkulous.

When I was a kid my mom made me wrap all the presents I was giving for Christmas or birthdays myself. As a consequence my gifts look like they were packaged and wrapped by a professional.

One of my fondest Christmas memories is my Mom, Dad, and myself wrapping all our gifts at once in the middle of the living room. I was excited that I got to stay up so late; I saw the famous White Eddie Murphy skit on SNL.

(blup-blip-whoooooooo!)

What seems to be the problem here, boys?
I'm gonna need to see a scan of both of your man cards.
Someone informed me there was some ghey being perpetrated in this quadrant? Have you had any ghey-whey to drink tonight?

As a masculinity calibrator I've never had call to enter a thread about gift wrapping before, but when things come up on my scanner, I have to investigate.
