Kanye West does not care about key signatures.

Still not the worst performance on SNL.

I'm looking at you, Jimmy Fallon.

cyberworm [TotalFark] 2008-12-14 02:42:08 PM
I watched SNL on DVR last night. I skipped right over his "performances." I actually used to like his musicoontil it became apparent what a huge douchebag he is. Now I won't even give it a consideration.

He's the Sarah Palin of the music world. Completely and totally convinced of his own intelligence and ability, and completely and totally unaware that he doesn't have what it takes.

I thought it was pretty good. Yeah, the vocals were sketchy but the performance was entertaining and the song was good. That's a whole lot better than I can say for most SNL performances.

I didn't even get where Kanye was going with this. His band was sidelined in back and weren't even visible because of the video. He can't sing because he is primarily a rapper. There was nothing musically interesting about the song. I couldn't see him because of the video contrast in the back. Exactly what in that performance was I supposed to be entertained by?

Wow, Colbert said it, and it became true. Maybe this is an Andy Kaufman/Jerry Lawler type of comedic ruse! Jokes on us!

SNL THREAD!

I thought Hugh did a great job, that second skit (Bronx Beat) was pretty funny, the Weekend Update was good, especially the 'REALLY!?!' section, and the Xmas family gained a chuckle.

That being said, the guy they had doing Blago absolutely sucked as him. It's really a shame considering how great a quality comedian would've been in that role.

Kanye was terrible, both times, and I could not get over his frohawk, 80s jacket, and the fact that all of his supporting people were hidden above and behind him in darkness.

caknuck 2008-12-14 03:50:33 PM
All I could think during the craptasticness was "Didn't he used to rap?"

Any Pie Left 2008-12-14 03:52:11 PM
Fred Armisen should have played Blago, you need a short person with a Napoleonic complex to really portray the man's psychotic self-confidence... still, it was pretty funny all the same, and I thought it a classic moment when Amy Poehler's near-teary farewell got interrupted by Fred at a key point. I suspect that was all rehearsed but it at least felt spontaneous and organic, like the times when the original SNL hit a high note. Some of the sketches even had endings to them for a change. Decent work and amusing.

I hate rap, but in his defense, EVERY band/musician sounds like shiat on SNL. I think their system is rigged to automatically make everyone sound like shiat. I don't think I've ever heard an SNL performance that sounded good.

I tried to watch SNL last night, but I didn't even make it to the first Kanye performance because the show was farking awful.

Most bands that have made it on talent merely sound worse than they normally do. "Artists" that have made it via marketing and digital enhancement, when stripped of the digital enhancement, apparently sound like me at a karaoke bar.

Probably one of, if not the greatest, musical performance on SNL ever. But it WAS nearly 20 years ago, heh.

SNL is a great platform to differentiate between live bands and studio bands. The problem is most popular bands/musicians these days are studio performers and rely on a lot of digital enhancement during their recordings, especially hip-hop/r&b artists. Every once in a while a band comes on SNL and wrecks their set, but most of the people they have on are just crap-pop bands/singers. Not a problem with SNL, it's a problem with popular music.

I couldn't tell if it was a frohawk or an afromullet Kanye had going on. The best part were the Max Headroom shades. Freaking sweet!

I liked the video screens but his overall performance was just shiatty. "I wish I was a reeeeeal boy!!!!" I just stared at my husband and said, "Is he really singing about this?"

the words 'Kanye West' and 'music' should never appear in the same sentence. He is the male Britney Spears, a no-talent pile of marketing at it's worst...

His incredibly poignant songwriting more than makes up for his lack of singing ability. See "Philadelphia." Kanye, not so much.

I think listening to him without Autotune is far better than with that ear-rape of an effect. I would probably really enjoy his new album if it wasn't for that crap. Then again, I'm used to listening to artists who can't sing (the Meat Puppets leap to mind especially).

/Doesn't understand the Kanye West hate (even if he is a douche-mobile)
//Does understand the Neil Young love.

tokeymctoke 2008-12-14 05:38:02 PM
What a complete douchebag.

This reminds me off an amusing story about a sound engineer... the band he was mixing really pissed him off by continuing to play encore after encore even though they were told their set had run over and they needed to stop. As I understand, the engineer was mixing both FOH and monitors, so he slapped pitch shifters on the monitor mix outputs, and left the stereo bus untouched. The result of course was the performers on stage hearing themselves a half-step out of tune, while the audience listened to their hopeless attempts to tune to their perpetually out-of-tune monitors.

Kanye would be more than worthy of a prank like that. Not that he needs help sounding like total crap, but it'd still be just as amusing imho.

Yes my friends, he truly is the "voice of this generation".
