There's a phenomenon in which "human interest" stories about veterans allow a certain type of Farker to go all maudlin. But the same situation involving a construction worker with four kids and a terminally ill wife would elicit a heartless wise crack.

Fascinating.

Nothing unusual, bomb dogs and handlers are basically joined at the hip anyway by virtue of what they do. Handlers have gone mental over the danger their dogs go through.

I do agree with the point that people can make fun, for some reason, of all sorts of tragedy and carnage but for some reason, certain types of tragedy get a pass.

It's not right. But it is a sign of the human condition, and the human condition is generally sh*tty.

We just feel sorry for them cause the construction worker has the good sense not to let himself get shot at.

The military has improved a great deal in their treatment of retiring K9s. I am glad to see this. Many dogs were simply abandoned after Vietnam.

"I had an open abdomen for about six weeks because it was so distended, they couldn't close it. And in the end, when they did close it about six weeks later, they actually used a titanium mesh that holds my muscles and abdominal wall together," she says. "And then, of course, they wired my sternum back together. So they weren't actually able to repair my pelvis and my spine until the end of August. And when they did that, they put six screws in my pelvis and two pins in my spine."

*dumbfounded*

I listened to that story on NPR this morning. It's very moving. And she and her husband (one of the medics who saved her life) volunteer with their local fire department; he is an E/R nurse; she works as an investigator for her county's child protection services, and she's studying for a masters degree in social work. Quite a strong commitment to service with those two--I'm glad there are people (and dogs) like that in the world.

It's amazing what a person can endure.
And what scars can remain.
But she's managing, day by day.
Life events like that can really put things in perspective.
Hats off to her, her dad, the pup + her hub.
Glad she's back living in a peaceful environment.

To our soldiers in the field + those about to ship out, I wish them brief deployment, a safe return + whatever help they require that we can provide.

"Mike wants to help," she says. "Mike wants to fix it, and there are a lot of things with me that you can't fix. You need to leave me alone. And he doesn't like to do that. He wants to be there. He wants to fix it, and it just makes it worse. So I think it works so well that he works the shift he does because I can come home and be alone while he's at work."

That attitude doesn't sound very healthy.

We should all do something for our veterans. I've given to a few chrities even though I am on disability. Everytime I see one I salute. I couldn't serve when I was younger, was considered 4F. Bleah. I really wanted to serve. I wanted to be a tanker ( tank gunner most of all but anything in a tank, I was tank insane ). Nope. Asthma, mental instability, general mayhem background, nope, 4F.

So I have utmost respect for those that make it into the armed forces and fight and serve. This soldier and her pup, I salute you!

/ brings a tear to my eye as my grandfathers and great uncle served and have been sending me memoribilia that is irreplaceable and totally unique.

For a person of normal life experiences, it wouldn't be. For a person who had gone through what she has, it's a conscious exercise of a defense mechanism that she requires at this time.
She won't be this way forever, but she most likely needs some space and working room - she is trying to reassemble a shattered life. So yeah - for you or me, it would be unhealthy - for her, it's healthy.

There's nothing more heart-warming than a story of a young woman who will live with severe emotional, physical, and mental scars for the rest of her life after getting her guts blown open in a pointless war for a country full of ungrateful assholes.

I hate it when people put sentimental spray paint on this shiatpile of a war.

Man Going His Own Way: What's preventing Selective 'Service' registration for the women?

Fundies and the Disney PrincessTM industry.

It's stupid, especially considering that modern warfare has many many many essential tasks that don't rely on raw brute strength. Drafting the ladies means more raw ogres of brute strength can be sent to jobs where that counts, instead of dispatching, airsupport or network management or even counting toilet paper shipments.

/Would have signed up when I registered to vote, but they don't give that card to girls.

Well, if there weren't already enough military members resentful about women serving, this would certainly add to their ranks. Imagine knowing that your combat tour could be extended more easily, or that your sea/shore rotation could get even worse because women are being steered toward the support/non-combat jobs.

It's happening enough already with the female volunteers. Get pregnant right before your ship deploys? Welcome to a year of shore duty while the rest of your shipmates (male and female) carry the load.

I'm in favor of women serving, and I understand that there will likely always be a few billets that won't be suitable for them, but adding women to the Selective Service rolls with the idea that we can use them for support jobs, freeing up the "ogres" for the grunt work would backfire horribly.
