It sounds like she either needs to spread some of the work to deputies or subordinates, or she needs better time management skills. I realize she's a mayor, but there are people out there with more responsibility that manage to get their work finished without staying in the office half the night.

Still, I didn't see any real reason to give her a curfew. What's the deal? Are there specific safety concerns? Is she running up bills? Are they concerned she's using the facilities for non-business? Is she making them look bad?

Honestly, it's not a 24/7 job to run a city of 21,000.

Sounds to me like she has trouble organizing and delegating.

/but, hey, if she wants to work late, WTF not?

It's not that she's not working, she's just working inefficiently. She may be the type of person that doesn't know how to delegate or just doesn't know what technologies are available for her to make her job easier. She almost might just be a farking control freak or an ego maniac that believes everything needs to be done by her since she's the MAYOR!!!

City of 21,000.... might not have deputy mayors and the like for this one to delegate stuff to.

On the other hand how much work can it be to administer a city of 21K?

j3nks: An elected official who is actually working for the public that elected her and you guys still find a reason to bash her.

THIS.

Yeah, she probably should learn to delegate more. And yeah, she probably could use better time management skills. And some of those fancy tehcnomological office machineries could probably help. But here's the thing. She's not complaining about doing the work. Hell, she likes doing the work. So unless she's getting paid by the hour, I don't see what the friggin' deal is. As long as her work is up to par and unaffected by any of these things, what's wrong with it? Hell, let her make copies by hand if she wants, so long as it doesn't affect her performance.

This is one politician that I can hold up to know somewhere in the cockles of my heart that not all politicians - hell, not all people in general - are heartless, arrogant douchebags. She may be only mayor of a very small town, but from what I can tell, she does a good job, she's proud of doing a good job, and she likes doing it. Am I being a bit naïve? Hell yes, but it also restores some of my faith in humanity, so screw all you naysayers.

I can't blame them. This is America. A public official working hard in this country usually indicates that there is some level of corruption going on. If this "Mayor Blanca Figueroa" character was legit, she'd half-ass her job just like any other red-blooded, patriotic American.

Nope...not funny...
People are going to be trying to work it into EVERY thread when it may only fit into 1 article 6 months from now...*sigh*

Anyway, how can you people tell that she's doing a good job and not complaining? Obviously the article doesn't have much in the way of facts and some farker's SOP is to just make shiat up, but really, how do you know? Have none of you met the person in the office that only runs around all day talking about how busy they are when everybody knows it is because the person does everything 'the dumb way'? Hell, when I worked for an ad firm, some people made a career out of drinking coffee and claiming to be 'in the weeds' all day, every day. I'm not willing to pass judgement from such a pathetically lacking article, but maybe this woman could stand to 'Work Smarter, Not Harder'?

The link Truthiness very nicely gave (which, when i clicked, I honestly expected to find a story about her goofing off during the night hours) tel us that. FTLinkedA:

"Do I have a private life? No. Even on Thanksgiving I was here," she said proudly.

Now unless she's psychologically imbalanced, anyone who is proud to have been working on Thanksgiving probably doesn't complain about said work. And yes, she could stand to benefit if she "worked smarter" (oh, how I hate that phrase, even if it is sometimes accurate). The thing is, if she does the same amount of work regardless, bludgeoning her way through things she could have taken care of much easier with the right gadget; the quality of the work does not suffer for it, and she is still able to get everything done, I don't see anything wrong with it. May not be the way I'd do it, but she should damn well be allowed to do it that way if it makers her happy.

Kareeshus 2008-12-14 01:31:44 PM
It might have been a cost issue. In my old hometown of about the same size, they locked up completely every night and the security guard had to be the last to leave and lock up. If your small-town event was using a room in the basement of city hall or whatever, you had to be out by 10pm. If you wanted to stay past 10pm, your group had to pay so much extra per hour for the extra manpower.

Though I can't imagine city council doesn't have bigger fish to fry when it comes to cutting costs.

Asclepius: It sounds like she either needs to spread some of the work to deputies or subordinates, or she needs better time management skills. I realize she's a mayor, but there are people out there with more responsibility that manage to get their work finished without staying in the office half the night.

to a point, however it sounds to me like she wants to actually do something good for the people she represents. She said that by day she is in meetings and at night she is dealing with the letters written to her (not one of her staffers) by the people that elected her. She feels the need to personally respond to those letters rather than delegate them out. Honestly, if this is really what she is doing, then there needs to be more politicians like that, and fewer that just offload or ignore such queries.

She does not get overtime, she is putting in extra time in theory to work for the people she represents, so I would say that she gets what being an elected official means (unless and until there is evidence that she is not doing what she says).

I have to imagine you're right, though I kinda see pandering to the constituency as a cheap cop-out in what should be done, in some cases. But that's a lengthy argument that no one would win for another day, for now, we're both right (getting those technokajiggers could probably help her get more stuff done, thus working smarter AND harder). What matters is, I'm off to beat Endless Setlist on Rock Band 2.Which, of course, is not conducive to political discussions.

If she can't stay past 11:00pm, fine, all she needs to do is leave the building at 10:59pm and then return at 11:01pm and say "I'm coming in to work early." I doubt the city council closed that loophole.

Sounds like a bunch of small town asshats that don't like a mayor with work ethic.
