What you say sounds nice if you look at the situation emotionally, but not if you look at it logically. This stuff might make you feel better about yourself but it won't actually do any good.

- Increasing the punishment for sexual offenders won't have as much of a deterring affect as it would have on crimes like fraud, because rapist genrally don't clamly analyse the risk and rewards of their actions.

- Giving a mandatory death penalty for anything short of murder means that there is little reason for them not to kill their victims as killing them won't make things worse for them.

- Appeals and due process exist for a reason. They are supposed to prevent us from punishing the wrong people. Considering how much uncertinity there can be in those cases and how high the penalties that you propose are it would be a good idea that you are extremly sure you got the right person before you pull the switch. It just might be your life that is on the line some day.

- Any measures such as tracking barcklest and sex offender registries aimed at preventing repeat offenses are misaimed if they are not accompanied by some sort of therapy. Just putting them in prison for a few years won't somehow 'cure' them.

-Your concern about the evil strangers preying on our children are fine but unfortunately woefully misplaced. These cases do exist and they get a lot of media exposure when they are discovered, but the sad truth is that chidren are generally far more at risk of being abused from their own relatives, close friends of the family or trusted authority figures than from total strangers. Also far more children are killed by drunk drivers than by sexual predators each year.

There are no easy solutions just ones that sound easy and help you feel better about yourself. You might derive comfort from seeing the world in black and white but that doesn't really help anyone least of all the children.

This is retarded. No amount of good parenting is going to keep a child with psychological issues from acting like a child with psychological issues.

Most of our character traits and aspects of our personalities are determined by genetics before we even leave the womb. Parents have become the new scapegoat for idiots who need something or someone to blame whenever something bad happens.

I can't fully agree with the second half of this post, but a lot of people seem to be forgetting the huge influence of genetics when it comes to severe personality defects. It shouldn't be an excuse for parents to neglect to raise their children properly, but it's simply not true that parents can be expected to effectively alter the way their child is wired. Don't get me wrong, I think it's unfortunate, and as a parent it scares the hell out of me that something could turn out wrong with my children and I won't necessarily be able to help them with it. This particular article doesn't provide enough details about the case for anyone to make a judgement for or against these parents just by reading it. You can't assume there were any indications that would lead them to think their kid would do this, either.

If this only happened once a year, because despite the consequences you list it is still going to happen, you would still hear about it for months. There are so many more horrible things that happen and are more of a real danger to children than rape and murder, but the media likes rape and murder, they will report on it until they have talked to every single insignificant person they can find who has the slightest connection to the people involved.
