Niiice. Old school Pantera.

I was listening to FBD the other day and was thinking how much I missed them =(

smokozziben [TotalFark] 2008-12-14 11:14:13 AM
So I had tickets to a show at Rosemont. I get there and the place is farking empty. Apparently Phil had a sore throat and cancelled the show. They announced it on the radio, because all Pantera fans listen to Q101 all day, right?

So a few months later they played a makeup show at NIU. It was the saddest thing....NO BEER ALLOWED!! There was no energy from the crowd, everyone was just stoned off their ass and zoning out. Phil starts screaming at people to get up and move, and I think someone cleared their throat. farking ridiculous.

phark Phil is right

There is a pretty decent audio bootleg torrent of their Power Metal show from The Basement in Dallas, sometime around 12/89, that aired on Z-Rock. Dime was amazing. We first heard Power Metal in 90 and were blown away by his guitar shredding, although we thought they sounded like a Priest ripoff at the time. But then CFH came along and that changed everything.

Saw them three times. Everytime they kicked ass. RIP Dimebag

I am still pissed that we couldn't get a Dimebag video greenlit on the 8th, when it meant something... Farking Beatle lovers...

/submitted 3 different links on Dec 8th
//listened to DamagePlan and Pantera all day anyway...

My favorite Pantera memory was watching them come down the street during the 1999 Cup parade in Dallas.

Nobody will ever accuse them of having great lyrics. But hot damn that got me wired.

I was at a Down show that got cancelled because Phil hurt his eye on a microphone somehow

Mine was hanging out with them after the first game of the cup playoffs in 2001 in the VIP tent. Star beat the Oilers 1-0. Me and my friend rooted for Edmington while wearing Bruins and Patriots jerseys in a sea of Stars fans. Fun night.

Saw these guys back in the day when they opened for Skid Row. Awesome show, Pantera was great.

speaking of pantera/skid row...

http://www.sebastianbach.com/archives/dimebag.html

if you want to read a very heartfelt and entertaining as shiat story about (more) life with Dimebag, then click this link. I'm not a fan of skid row or sabastian, but this is a terrific read and if you're a brutal metal heartless good like me you'll be surprised when the tears come. either tears or a great big smile, so be prepared for either.

Dimebag was a decent guitarist, but good God that is the WORST recorded guitar tone I've ever heard in my life. Sounds like he was playing a Peavey practice amp he found at a pawn shop. Solid state amps=no. Just no.

wow, i always thought sebastian was a douchebag of epic proportions, but that was a great read.

also-dimebags tone got WAY better after the first record. it already rules by the 2nd one.

I never saw Pantera, but I did get a chance to see Damageplan. Zakk Wylde was there and did a solo off with Dimes. It was amazing.

FlyingPig [TotalFark] 2008-12-14 04:02:04 PM
Dime was an awesome guy.

Phil was a macho, sexist, racist, homophobic, loudmouthed douchebag, and a lot of (not all) Pantera fans are macho, sexist, racist, homophobic, loudmouthed douchebags like him.

I like a lot of Pantera's stuff. I wouldn't call myself a fan.

i never had a problem with his tone, but for me, Randy Rhodes' tone was just... too dry for words.

FlyingPig [TotalFark] 2008-12-14 04:03:57 PM
Also, while I am a Megadeth fan, I have to admit it sounds pretty likely Dave copped the "Train of Consequences" riff from this song.

FlyingPig: Also, while I am a Megadeth fan, I have to admit it sounds pretty likely Dave copped the "Train of Consequences" riff from this song.

Why? Because of a syncopated palm muted riff? Jesus, how many of those exist in metal?

His tone worked perfectly for this band, one of the few heavy bands where you can actually hear the bass guitar stand a bit on its own. (truckloads of bands in their genre probably dont even need a bassist).

Also one of the few bands that got more intense with each album, to a point. I though that TGST was over the top to the point of being stupid, despite a few good tracks. (13 Steps is just killer).

Saw them live 4x over the years, each show not quite as good as the last. Still, they were, to me, by far the best and most influential metal act going during their prime. They had vibe like very few others.

RIP indeed.

Pretty sure he used those on purpose to get a harsh tone. I'm not usually a fan of them, but I feel like it fit well with what they were doing.

You mean Dimebag didn't personally call you at home to tell you the show was cancelled? What a prick.

StinkyFiddlewinks 2008-12-14 10:46:16 PM
Saw them after Exodus and before Suicidal Tendencies at The Ritz in NYC. Pantera wore everyone out, there was nothing for ST to work with. People were slumped up against walls, sitting down on the floor in the bar upstairs. It was incredible.

FBD was the last CD from them I liked.

kab: I though that TGST was over the top to the point of being stupid, despite a few good tracks. (13 Steps is just killer).

alot of people say this, but i think the last 2 are the best ones.

jhva3: Pretty sure he used those on purpose to get a harsh tone. I'm not usually a fan of them, but I feel like it fit well with what they were doing.

no, he just had a shiatty tone on the first album like most metal guys at the time.

StinkyFiddlewinks: FBD was the last CD from them I liked.

weird, its ok but the only one i think thats more lame than good.

0/10. Nice try, though.

As a non-musician, I admire Dimebag most for the way he turned rock star life into fun for everyone around him and made sure nobody ever had an empty cup. MTV (of all places) had a great archive of all these Ozzfest bands best Dimebag stories.

chuck norris taught dimbag how to play guitar.

/has it not been long enough to make that joke yet?

//he's better on it anyway
/DOWN ftw

Pantera was groundbreaking. I think as far as groundbreaking metal bands, there are four: Black Sabbath (who invented it), Judas Priest (took it in a new direction, which was copied by many), Metallica (changed metal again), and then Pantera (who added serious groove and soul to metal, and till this day, laid the framework for every metal band currently out these days).

Some of my favorite Anthrax songs have leads by Dimebag. (and i hate leads but liked his style)

I got to see Pantera twice and both times Phil was the weakest link.
