We lucked out where we are. Power was only out for about 3 hours, but I bought a genny after the last big power outage. And before anyone says tfa numbers don't match the headline, CMP doesn't serve the whole state.

Western New Yorker here. I don't mean to laugh at the misfortunes of others, but the news last night had some video of NH and Maine soccer moms complaining about how they were without power for hours/days and couldn't handle it.

My response? WTH? These people live in New Hampshire or Maine and they don't have a generator, a backup plan, or emergency winter clothing to wear around the house? It's a two day power outtage for farks sake, not an apocalypse.

If only there were some way to train all these men to be able to survive in harsh climates?

I'm driving to New Hampshire next weekend for the holiday. Hopefully it'll be cleared up before we make it. I just called my folks up there; thankfully they're OK.

Subby, I think it's usually "1000+" without the space after the number. Your headline confused me.

"The number 100,000 AND multiple Mainers are without power? That's a shame! But 100,000 was always so hard-headed about buying a generator."

swiller [TotalFark] 2008-12-14 10:05:45 AM
good headline subby

Molavian 2008-12-14 10:07:38 AM
Maybe you should update your damn pitiful infrastructure.

Then the power wouldn't die every time the wind blows.

Fookin 2008-12-14 10:10:29 AM
I'm in Auburn and we didn't lose power. I was at Slainte in Portland the other night and the only problems I saw on the drive down there were some traffic lights that were out in Portland. Last year we lost power for 3 days, bought a $600 generator on the 3rd day and of course, the power came back within 3 hours of us getting the generator hooked up.

There are over 300,000 without power in New Hampshire.

Maine is where people from Nova Scotia go on vacation. It's like Canada but all the stuff in the stores looks strange and unfamiliar. There are some nice places on the coast. Very chill.

Outlet Stores FTW!

Late last night and the night before,
Tommyknockers, Tommyknockers, knocking at the door.
I want to go out, don't know if I can,
'Cause I'm so afraid of the Tommyknocker man.

Real Mainers have generators, warm clothes, etc. The soccer moms probably moved here from Connecticut or New York.

SaintAnky: My response? WTH? These people live in New Hampshire or Maine and they don't have a generator, a backup plan, or emergency winter clothing to wear around the house? It's a two day power outtage for farks sake, not an apocalypse.

The issue with a lot of the houses in New England are:
They are old. While updated electrical often happens, usually the circuits cannot handle a generator.

Most of them also run on oil heat. If furnces do not have electric, they do not run.

The temps were in the teens to 20's yesterday. No amount of winter clothing is going to keep you sustainably warm for a lengthy period of time.

Every time that I mention the fact that the majority of the homes in the Northeast rely of oil heat, most people are shocked. Most of the homes are so old and tiny that they sell split box spring sets up here. Basically, one box spring, broken into to halfs. That way, we can lood them through the tiny hallways and tight corners.

schattenteufel: People still live in Maine?!

Not only that, but people willingly move there.
My girlfriend just flew up there over the weekend.
She was visiting one of her childhood friends that moved there.

does this thread negate all the ones with headlines about the northeast laughing at people in New Orleans, etc, who were having trouble with winter weather?

Because it seems like people in the northeast are complaining now too.

Meanwhile, here in RI, it's vacillating between highs in the 30's to the 60's. This is not normal.

It put it to you this way: WTF???

I guess I lucked out up in Bangor. I wasn't even aware the storm was that bad until I read FARK.

These people should know better than to live in a blizzard zone.

Asclepius [TotalFark] 2008-12-14 10:53:18 AM
Lewiston/Auburn here. Not even a flicker.

I do remember 1998 when we went 14 days without power, however. Good times, good times.

Dick Schittlippz 2008-12-14 10:55:36 AM
Yesterday, driving from Bangor to Portland was rather spectacular. All the trees from Newport/Pittsfield* south looked to be encased in glass.

The ice storm of 1998 was far, far worse than this. That beast lasted for 3 days. I remember listening to the sounds of exploding transformers and trees that quite literally shattered under the weight of all that ice. It affected much of New England as well as Quebec and the Maritime Provinces.

I installed a pellet stove this fall in anticipation of high oil prices and to have a secondary heat source in case of disasters like an ice storm or blizzard. It has a battery back-up kit for power failures.

I wonder if the Maine weather pendulum is swinging back toward harsher winters with heavier snowfall. Last year, we had a lot more snow than in previous years. Made the skiing and snowshoeing that much more fun.

*(30 miles south of Bangor for you flatlanders, ayuh)
