Nina Blackburn: So, what's the deal with the hats?
Ice Cold: shiat, the hats're what NWH is all about. See, back in the day when there were slaves and stuff, we was forced to work in the hot sun all day, hatless. I mean, not even a babushka.
Tone Def: Word. Heads totally exposed to the sun.
Ice Cold: So when the slaves got back from the fields, they was too tired to revolt against they masters. So what we're sayin' now is: Yo, we got some hats now, muh-farkas.
Tasty Taste: And we ain't too tired to bust a cap in yo' ass.

What do you call 10,000 lawyers in a hole in the bottom of the ocean? A good start

Get rid of stupid ass lawsuits. Scumbag lawyers lead to this kind of thinking which leads to my doctor doing $1500 worth of tests when I have a slight fever.

They really only do those things when they want to... I heard they can be kind of clique-ish tho - if you don't dance with them they tend not to want to be your friend. Ah well...

I went to school in Australia and it was just around the time schools started introducing "no hat, no play" policies. Basically, if you didn't bring your hat to school you had to sit under a tree for all of lunchtime while the other kids ran around. Some teachers on playground duty didn't care so much and me, being the rebellious type used to often play without a hat. I used to get horribly burnt to the point of peeling, even after an hour in the sun.

Now I have scars all over my nose from having cancers cut out. Don't underestimate the power of the Australian sun. I'm Grateful that hat policies are being more strongly enforced so that more kids don't end up looking like me.

Too hard to enforce... yeah.

Anyone remember his army days? Took even the dumbest people about 5 minutes to learn 'outside equals hat on' - 'inside equals hat off'. Just to avoid more being shouted at in a place where you were being shouted at for basically everything apart from breathing....

On the other hand: Army was also the place where you handed off your brain at the gate on monday morning and got it back when leaving for the weekend - is that what we want for schools? Yes... you back there....with the black shirt, yes... OH, WE DO? Yeah, sorry, I forgot about that training-stupid-but-obidient-citizens thing for a second there, sorry, you're right of course. Yes, we do want that. Heaven beware that kids develop the ability to draw complex conclusions themselves like.... "uh....my head's all burned....uh....I ...um.... might maybe try a letting little LESS FARKING SUN SHINE ON IT"

*shakes head*

FTFA: "We live in an increasingly litigious society and I would not be surprised if a student ends up with skin cancer later in life and decides the school was insufficient in its duty of care and they sue the school or the principal, or both," Mr Ackerman said.

Have fun proving that connection, Tortboy.

Unfortunately young people can't really pull that off without seeming like hipster douchebags. Sadness, but proper hat wear was a really classy thing.

WARNING WARNING WARNING

God designed humans to live under the hot tropical sun. However, not all men have stayed in his grace. It has come to our attention that some of you pale mutant freaks who abandoned the Eden of Africa for the cold Hell of Europe have attempted to come out from under the north temperate cloud layer and return to the ancestral homeland under clear tropical skies. Go home. That sunburn is His gentle reminder. It will become more harsh over time.

Comply promptly. Do not make us use the vegemite.

This is just another reason Oz should never have happened. Let's send the people with the most genetic predisposition to skin cancer to a place with the strongest UV rays.

That said, it maybe more sensible to construct shade safe areas to play instead of forcing the hat issue.

So now what happens when the hats start being used to display gang colours? Will the schools have to issue state-approved hats to every student?

darth_nick23: hats were always banned in my schools.

You're an American like me, right? Hats were 'gang-affiliated', starting in at least the 80s. You couldn't wear hats into schools or into clubs. Then again, some areas were so legitimately bad (or, unfortunately, were so ridiculously paranoid) you couldn't even wear certain colors. And don't let it be a team jacket or jersey. And especially don't let it be a team in California.

So hearing about aussies being forced to wear hats -- even for their own health good -- is tickling to me. Then again, this is America. People fight seatbelt and helmet laws because 'it's my right to kill myself if I want to'.

Sounds like the school needs to get a lawyer with an ounce of brains (i.e. anyone smarter than Lionel Hutz) to explain to the litigious brats that they'd have a case if the school said they were not allowed to wear hats.

Personal Choice: It's all about the consequences

GoldDude: So now what happens when the hats start being used to display gang colours? Will the schools have to issue state-approved hats to every student?

As long as the hats match the state-approved uniforms, it looks like everyone will tolerate it.

It sounds like gand members are peacocks. Gang members will find ways to display their colors, like pomegranate and puce, or beauty and sable, (I'm being a smartarse in the color combinations) no matter what they wear, including lame tattoos. Like painting shoes, wearing ascots, and layered clothes. Man, are these gangs gay or what? And wearing some colorful hat won't improve it?

Let people wear hats! People would prefer hoodies? I hadn't wone a hoodie since I was a baby. Some people never grew out of them, I suppose.

So, not allowing people to wear hats in school (not in the building, of course) is retarded. And the litigious environment we have allowed to happen, is simply retarded.

If we've resigned ourselves to tolerating and accepting the mandates of the retarded, what does that make everyone? Don't follow them! Don't accept what they force upon you.

Stand up people! Don't be led by the state! Don't give in to the lawyers! Find a hat that you like and wear it proudly! Make a bold statement! Enjoy your millinery! Be a hatter! Wouldn't you like to be a hatter too?

/Rabble rousing is fun...
/Perhaps a little silly.

When I was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground, my company had to do post clean-up before being released for the weekend. We were in PT uniform (shorts and t-shirts), and it was a sunny spring day. I told my DS that I either needed to put on a hat or get out of the sun. He asked me why, and I said my head was going to burn. He said "it's not that bad", and I said, "that's because you are black" He told me to STFU and pick up garbage.

Monday morning, I showed up for PT in my BDU's so I could go to sick call. DS started yelling at me because I wasn't wearing a hat. I turned around so he could see the bloody scabby mess that my scalp was. I got the "DAMMMMN... I thought you were bull shiattin the other day"

It has little to do with litigation and a lot to do with the fact that Australia, like Newfoundland and Nova Scotia (and sometimes Maine and Vermont) are under the hole in the ozone layer.

Skin cancer didn't used to kill kids and young adults. Now it does. It's no more a nanny state idea than having stoplights is.

UncleCal, I find you really stupid, and not in a refreshing way, either.
