I know! Nicaragua beat us!

From the Comments:
The list isn't exhaustive; I know for a fact that Kiribati not only stood the Chinese people up twice but also said they looked fat in that dress and never returned any of their calls or texts either. Pretty ballsy for such a microscopic Pacific island nation.

I lolled

Its inflation in the price of indignation. An Olympics boycot just doesn't buy much indignation these days.

You've got an army made up of a few million brainwashed and incredibly expendable conscripts... and you publish a LIST of countries that have offended your country?

Weak sauce, small penis.

Anyone else think it's stupid that a government thinks it is the collective consciousness for a people as far as things that have offended it? Or that they'd make this list in the first place?

Marine1 2008-12-13 11:13:58 AM
Eh. I'm bored. Let's make a list of countries China has offended.

1. USA- Starts in post-WWII period when they dumped Chiang Kai- shek for Mao Zedong. Injury continues when they sent soldiers to back North Korea in Korean War, which resulted directly in the loss of life of American soldiers, Marines, and airmen. They reinforced NVA and Viet Cong forces during the Vietnam War, again causing the loss of life of American soldiers, Marines, airmen, and sailors.

Not enough? In April 2001, the Chinese intercepted a U.S. Navy EP-3E Aries II reconnaissance aircraft 70 miles off of the Chinese island of Hainan over international waters. They took the crew of the aircraft, who was forced to make an emergency landing on the island as a result of damage caused to their aircraft by the Chinese interceptors, prisoner for 11 days and didn't return the aircraft for 3 months following the incident. The black boxes from the plane still have not been returned, and probably never will be. Again, the crew was flying over international waters with no armament on the aircraft.

Enough with the military incidents. Let's take a look at more commercial injuries that China has imparted onto the US.
For years, Chinese citizens have pirated copyrighted material released by artists in the United States. Chinese manufacturers have copied U.S. designs, often without license. The types of products copied ranges includes everything from Fender guitars to the M16 service rifle. These copies have caused millions of dollars of lost revenues for American companies, as well as legal expenses in the effort to protect intellectual property. Recent U.S. government estimates put Chinese industrial espionage as the number one threat to the security of American companies.

China has recently released what amounts to a dizzying list of defective and dangerous products for international markets, including the U.S. The products range from tainted dog food to lead based paints in toys. The Chinese government is also encountering troubles with these products inside the People's Republic, and it has recently come to light that the government there surpressed news about tainted baby formula during the Olympics, which was responsible for the death of what could be thousands of Chinese infants.

I could go on about the shenanigans China pulled during the Olympics with the age of athletes, or tell you about other countries that China has injured, but I think you've read enough.

/China is the spoiled crybaby of the world that blames countries for offending it when it has done things that are MUCH worse to those countries.

jake_lex [TotalFark] 2008-12-13 11:17:15 AM
China demands this double standard: they want to be taken seriously as a Big Player On The World Stage, but you can't dare criticize them.

You can't have it both ways, though. You step outside your borders and start influencing things in other countries (like, for example, their shenanigans in Africa), people will talk about you. Ask America. It's part of the deal.

Mr Logo 2008-12-13 11:19:59 AM
Marine1: Anyone else think it's stupid that a government thinks it is the collective consciousness for a people as far as things that have offended it? Or that they'd make this list in the first place?

The Chinese believe that the country must exist in a confucianist harmony where the whole country must be as one or it will be torn apart.

Of course there is nothing harmonic about this because the country is only kept in this state with an iron fist, and we all know that this harmony is not a prerequisite for national survival because many western countries survive with enormous diversity.

I'm not Chinese, but I live in China. My wife is Chinese. (Day 19 of the marriage.)

My completely unscientific take on it is this:

China has a persecution complex. There seems to be a general feeling that other countries are "picking on" China when they point out the wrongs of China. I'll let some smarter farker than me theorize why.

Also, I just wanted to point out that it is the Japanese that have "issues" with the L and R sounds, not the Chinese. Mandarin Chinese has both of those sounds (although the R is a bit different than the English way of pronunciation.)

Wouldn't this apply to every countries that have strong patriotism? When I used to live in South Korea for my ex-job, many of the American expats I met worried that every countries are picking on America.

Also, I just wanted to point out that it is the Japanese that have "issues" with the L and R sounds, not the Chinese. Mandarin Chinese has both of those sounds (although the R is a bit different than the English way of pronunciation.)

As a non-fluent Japanese speaker, I find this very accurate. Bravo.

Here are some English lessons put together by the People's Liberation Army.

Example:
104. Do you know our lenient policy towards POWs?
你知道我们宽待俘虏 30340;政策吗?
105. The chief criminals shall be punished without fail.
首恶必办。
106. Those who are accomplice under duress shall go unpunished.
胁从不问。
107. Those who perform deeds of merit shall be rewarded.
立功受奖。
108. Be lenient towards those who confess their crimes.
坦白从宽。
109. Severely punish those who refuse to do so.
抗拒从严。

This always kills me when China says that. Grow up. It's a big, bad world out there. Your feelings hurt? Really? Are you going to cry?

Part of being a major power in the world (which China is becoming)is having people talk about you endlessly and criticize what they don't agree with. Could you imagine if the president of the US went around talking about people around the world "hurting Americans' feelings" by being critical of something the US has done or not done? The president would never have time to do anything else.

I would say it that it is a cultural thing. Chinese people don't just point out the faults of other people publicly (but they are quite open/biatchy with critisism and gossip in private, fun is having lunch with a bunch of old chinese biddies). It would just be rude. The idea that China is being picked on by other conuntries is more understandable form that perspective. That and news of the US/EU/UN discussing other contries in the same manner just doesn;t make it into China, so there is no sense that this is normal par for course for superpowers to be so heavily critized (as they should be).

Instead, when pointing out personal problems, the Chinese use creative euphemisms (i.e. "He can't pay his rent because he has a massive gambling problem" might translate into "He can't pay his rent because has some investment problems" when explaining the situation to someone that isn't in your immediate circle of framiliarity). Doing so results in less loss of face for the person.

On a national level, I suppose the Chinese would consider other countries pointing out their (in personal opinion, massive) problems to be rude based on an extension of that. It causes China (and the people therof) to lose face.

That said, it is important to get the message to the people so to speak, and to do so without immediately pissing them off.

I would recommend more that when critizing the political actions of China, refer specifically to just the Party and not just "China". That would probably be better recieved on the street as it is less peronal. China refers to all Chinese.

I wouldn't consider that to be kow towing to the yellow peril (and btw, FARK YOU Jakevol2), and more international co-operation/getting the ball rolling. China and the Western world will probably both have to make accomodations for each other's culture and the ball has to start somewhere. Without free speech and media, I am afraid it will be more difficult for the Chinese to get that message though.

More on this when I'm back in Canada.

No, I don't think you are a kind of a person who cannot be a racist. You can always hate China while trying not to become an anti-Chinese racist like me. You don't even deserve to criticize China with this attitude. It's people with the attitude like you who are demoralizing the already-dysfunctional-and-unrecoverable Free Tibet movement.

Seconded. Well put.

For the record, I am Chinese Canadian. Born in HK, raised in Canada since I was 6. If my posts seem to be a little too pro Chinese it is because I am currently posting from Hong Kong and don't know what the limits of the Great Firewall are. I too, have been exposed to the same media and cultural attiudes as you have (hence, my paranoia about posting critisim against the Chinese).

That said...notice how I managed to make a point without invoking any offensive racial sterotypes.

And I quote you:

That's what makes you an asshole and makes people ignore your very vaild viewpoint of "Free Tibet".

The scary thing to me is that more and more people are doing this. Dehumanizing the "enemy". It has been getting easier to hate China these days. Hate never ends well.

Bombs fly when diplomacy ends. We are still in the diplomacy stage.

And now, just to prove that I am Canadian and not some kind of secret Chinese propaganda agent:

*ahem*

"I hereby swear my allegiance to the Great White North where the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, was gifted to the world. I swear my undying fealty to Tim Hortons; may thine crack-laced coffeepot never be empty. May the Canadian Army ignore my pleas of help the next time snow falls and maple syrup/poutine/Apple Fritter Timbits taste as ashes in my mouth if I should ever break this oath. From now to the day the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup. Amen"

who are you to decide whom I deserve to criticize? China's record of human rights violations, enviromental obliteration, underhanded international policy, their despicable policies about Darfur, their win at all costs crap at the Olympics (those girls were barely twelve if that). Their slow motion take over of the United States and yes my initial cause of concern Tibet and their pogrom of eliminating the native Tibetans and relpacemetn of Han Chinese. China biatches and moans about "hurt feelings" when in fact they are the most egregious offenders in the world. When they have total internet freedom, when they have complete freedom of the press and freedom of speech, when they stop goose stepping around Tienamen Square like a stick is up their ass then you can tell me if I am qualified to criticize them.

I want China's feelings to get hurt and as long as they continue to practice the international and domestic policies they practice I will never respect them.
