(Newsreview) Interesting Trent Reznor on the music industry: "They don't care if it's timeless art that's being put out, as long as they sell that disc-even if it means you wearing your pants backward or whatever"   (newsreview.com) divider line 42

I never really got into NiN, but I'm glad Reznor consistently speaks out against the corrupt and downright evil RIAA.

I have friends who make music; a couple are successful, but a couple others who should be, aren't. These non-succeeding friends are so much better than the ones who've succeeded they're in a different league--making really, truly, great music, as opposed to some pretty okay stuff along with a "here ya go!" hit or two--and we all know it. If any of them read this and remember my Fark handle, I hope all are grown up enough to see and accept the truth in what I'm saying.

The difference between these folks is that two are success-motivated, and two are music-motivated. The success-motivated pair by no means sold out to make it, but I'm pretty darn sure they wrote some stuff tailored to "make it."

I don't see much harm in that, but it disappoints me that the people making decisions about who gets to eat free forever, as opposed to those who will get to hand their children a stack of brilliant-but-unsold CDs, need to be fed that kind of stuff, and often don't have an ear skilled enough to know the great stuff. The music industry, in my wildest dream, will sign and promote those who are the best, as opposed to those who are most willing to spoon-feed the public's flavor-of-the-month taste, or willfully make something at least palatable for them.

I could go on and on, but in the end I'm just bummed that money is so, so important to industry. I'm a huge fan of capitalism, but when quality work is dismissed in favor of schlock and cheap gimmicks, something is wrong, especially when we're considering artistic work.

This is an incomplete rant, and I don't want to argue about it, I just hope the basics of my point are clear. And yes, Trent is pretty much on it.

Fans don't listen to his image, you know. Well some do, but they're adolescent and haven't learned certain things yet.

When is Closure coming out on DVD?

Never!

What?!

You can ask Universal, because they're idiots, and they're afraid to put it out.

People are dying for that.

Yes, but ... there is a silver lining.

I'm listening.

A couple of years ago around this time of year, somebody must have broken into my personal files and uploaded onto a torrent site the entire DVD of Closure.

Oh darn.

Yeah, I don't know who could have done that.

Hmm.

So, that basically means that it doesn't need to come out on DVD anymore.

Sorry Trent, I'm going to have to steal a copy.

C'mon, you know that's not the right thing to do.

Epic win!

Saw them at Arco tonight. I'm am not a fanboy at all, but the show was really quite impressive, musically and visually. They put a lot of work into creating the experience, and it really paid off.

They didn't play "Down In It," though. Everything has to have a blemish, I guess.

I really like the NIN stuff that I've heard, and that interview makes me want to hear more of it. Trent's got my respect. He comes off as a pretty smart guy & decent sort of chap.

rogue49 2008-12-13 10:03:53 AM
...and you're just figuring this out?

Hey, good things can come from bad...I'll take this.

Its not that there's any integrity or anything,
but "pure" artists don't tend to get their music out to the masses.

So play a little with the system,
and more will get to hear you and for longer.
The execs will be in their graves, your music may live on...

I read an interview with Trent about three or four years ago. They asked him why he didn't play Down In It anymore. He talked about how it's a song that doesn't mean anything to him anymore, and that it's so meaningless that he doesn't like to play it. I personally liked Sin and Ringfinger off of Pretty Hate Machine, so I figure I'll never get to hear my favorite tracks off of that album live anyway.

No, no it's not.

Bach, Mahler, Mozart=timeless art

Anything with a drum machine=not timeless art.

Don't believe me...but in, say, 200 years, guess who will be long forgotten.

you're a drummer, aren't you?

I wouldn't go so far as to say NIN is timeless (hell, PHM is ridiculously dated), but I've never quite understood the hate for drum machines. yes, the 80s shlock that used drum machines to sound like "real drums" just to save some cash sounds awful, but drum machines do have a fairly distinctive sound that lend to a band's overall sound.

I just came here to say that I saw Nine Inch Nails at lollapalooza in like... 1991. They played at four in the afternoon in August in broad damn daylight. Yet they had their sort of club show with the smoke machines and the strobe lights. It looked like they were having a cookout up on the stage. Ive been laughing at them ever since.
ymmv.

I think you're all forgetting some of Bach's lesser known works. Namely "The Well Tempered Drum-Machine" and "Toccata and Synth-Pop in D minor".

Are those still in print? I've been looking for them for ages but cant seem to find them for sale anywhere.

//But really folks, lets applaud Trent Reznor for his "stick it to the evil record labels" marketing campaign and the upcoming line of Reznor approved tight black jeans and pre-torn tops at Hot Topic.
