Probably a good thing, being in the heart of UAW country and all.

Maybe, but he made a good decision to vote against the deal.

I don't know if there is any more we can do to strengthen the Great Lakes Water Protection Act, but f*ck any of those states that need our help on that.

I think it's nice the future of the country is being destroyed by a few Senators who take money from overseas companies and demand that American workers be paid less.

So you have no problem with the future of the country being wrecked because Republicans wouldn't compromise on 3 little words when the Democrats have done nothing but step back for Republican concerns?

The UAW is a stooge union related to the AFL-CIO, which was created to divide the IWW and move unions closer to the center right.

Dear Mr. Bunning,
Keep your ass dowin in Kentucky. We have plenty of large SUVs with which we can pull a hit and run. Also we have a lot of laid off UAW workers with a lot of time on their hands.

You will when the TARP money comes out to the big 3 next week.

But don't worry, the south will rise AGAIN!!!

In the mean time, with the notable exception of Texas, the blue states will keep them afloat with our tax money. Like a half-retarded cousin who can't pay his own bills.

Well I am glad the republicans killed the bill but I wish they didn't water down their argument by blaming the UAW and worker compensation.

Now I think it is perfectly reasonable for a senator to say "I'm not going to vote to bailout a company whose workers get such and such pay and benefits"...but nevertheless when the UAW finally concedes then the republicans will not be able to say no and we will have yet another bailout.

The fact is that these car companies signed a contract with the union so blaming the union is ridiculous. GM and Chrystler and possibly Ford need to all get together and talk about merging which will allow them to sell off a lot of real estate, eleminate overlapping brands, paperwork and management. Of course a lot of workers will go too but that is better than all of these companies going bankrupt. They can also renegotiate with the UAW and they might be able to pull it off if the alternative is bankruptcy and failure for all of them.

Anyways foreign car companies employ an awful lot of Americans and build quite a few cars here. Meanwhile the big 3 are making their shiatty cars in Mexico. I do not accept the premise that these companies are too important to fail.

Vagpuncher: As I mentioned in the McConnell thread yesterday, Kentucky has a Ford plant in Louisville and the Corvette plant in Bowling Green.

And if something were to happen to those plants I think McConnell might have some 'splainin' to do.

Really, this whole situation sucks. It seems in the bank bailout that money with oversight made sense, and no money made sense, but instead of compromising with less money with oversight, they went with money with no oversight. The case here is slightly different. Here it seems the Democrats are doing the wrong things for the right reasons, and the Republicans are doing the right things for the wrong reasons.

GAT_00: So you have no problem with the future of the country being wrecked because Republicans wouldn't compromise on 3 little words when the Democrats have done nothing but step back for Republican concerns?

Oh, I see. The "future of the country" will be "wrecked" if we don't whole-heartedly embrace what is basically Corporate Communism. Right. Getcha.

Personally, I'm a free-market Capitalist. Therefore, I tend to believe that businesses should either succeed or fail on their own merits. If NONE of the Big 3 Auto Makers are financially viable, then maybe it's time for one of them to go out of business, thus allowing the other two to split the resulting buyer-base between them.

The best part is, I can actually prove it with numbers and you know it. The south doesn't pay its share of federal dollars. They take in more than they pay. Deal with it.

What a bunch of patriotic Americans many of you are turning out to be - putting the interests of foreign corporations before American companies and workers.

I'm not surprised in the least, after years of listening to Republicans and Fark Independents shill for Israel, China and Saudi Arabia, why wouldn't they pull their pants down for Toyota when their puppetmasters tell them to?

Fark you, you don't deserve to call yourself American.

It was interesting watching the coverage of this issue on the news today.

On the North American manufacturer's lines we see three guys standing around a car. One has his hands on his hips, one is on a cell phone, the other is screwing on part of the exhaust system. They are wearing shorts, crocs, jeans, whatever.

Switch to the Asian manufacturer, but a plant in North America, and everyone is wearing coveralls and they look busy.

The Gibraltar Trade Center has canceled an appearance by former Detroit Tigers pitcher Jim Bunning at a weekend sports card show after the Kentucky congressman voted against the loan giveaway package Thursday night to help funnel taxpayer money to Detroit's auto companies the United Auto Workers.

FTFY.

Real mature. So all Asians are really industrious and hard working? What's next, footage of Mexicans being lazy?

If those guys aren't garunteed their next pay check they aren't gonna do a bunch of free labor on cars nobody'll buy. It's the 'Murican way.

Wow, the Gibraltar Trade Center makes national news.

That place is the nexus of the universe for poor white trash.

Well...the US auto companies build crap. If they built a better product we would not be discussing anything.

What is your point? Why do they build crap? They have access to the all of the best materials and engineers...where is the weakest link in the profit ladder?

Prosperity is largely a matter of personal habit. You can't really pay trailer trash enough to make it prosperous. It would require an infinite amount of money, and money, by definition, isn't infinite.

Let's not jump to party conclusions here. 10 Republicans did vote for the deal, the Democrats had some people defect, otherwise they had the votes for it to pass.

Democrats have as much blame in this as Republicans - it wasn't a straight party vote.

2.5 hours from the Border San Antonio?

Right smack in the middle of 'Thembeanerstookourjeorbs', TX?

I am not complaining about it. I am for it. I find the hypocrisy of those who complain about welfare while not complaining about federal funding welfare amusing. It is exactly the same thing; funds coming from the haves to the have-nots.
