This is a 10-year old list (with the addition of the two at the end) and is apparently only for Congressmen. At the very best this list is cherry-picking. If you want something a little more inclusive and recent, here is a start (new window)

Who cares? Is it acceptable if the other guy is marginally worse?

Ted Stevens, Duke Cunningham, Larry Craig, Mark Foley, Tom DeLay, Robert Ney, and Rick Renzi would like a word. I'm sure there are some recent GOP Congressmen I'm forgetting.

The party with the most power at the time tends to be the most corrupt. Why would I buy influence from someone who doesn't have any? That's like trying to buy a steak at Hardees.

I think it's like golf - as long as your score is lower, you win.

Well, that and Bush spends the entire raid sitting on the mass dispel. Maybe if they could get him on an autopardon mod instead, he'd have tome to do some actual healing.

didn't he say "major offenses"? is there some sort of level above major? because DWIs and Financial disclosure irregularities and Financial disclosure misdemeanors don't sound too Major to me.

This would be interesting to read if it wasn't done by partisan hacks who would willingly omit information to try and paint the opposing party in a negative light.

RemyDuron 2008-12-12 02:46:04 PM
Hmm, 1992-1999, I wonder why they don't cover the last decade (besides 1999). . . I mean, there weren't any major republican scandals in that time, right?

And DUI isn't corruption, it is if he tried to cover it up (which may have happened), but elected officials committing crimes does not equal corruption. Abusing their powers = corruption.

Yeah. Because being a neocon is such a turn-on for female Obama supporters right now. They jump right on that. "Oh, God, I'm so hot! Tell me again how you're responsible for my Dad losing his retirement! yes, yes, Yes, YES..."

# Gerald Kleczka (D-WI). Convicted of DWI, 1987. Arrested for DWI, 1990 and 1995.

So a DWI is corruption? Arrests count too, but only for this guy?

The author then states in his request for a more comprehensive list:

But please, make sure the list is apples-to-apples. The NTU's list, for example, is only among US Congressmen and only for convictions of or guilty pleas to major offenses.

Did he read his list? It mentions two arrests with no mention of convictions for those specific arrests. The guy's first conviction doesn't automatically mean he was convicted for the other arrests. So he's violating his own standards. He also says major offenses but lists DWIs, and fines for disclosure irregularities which are not major corruption offenses. This one too:

# Wes Cooley (R-OR). Lying about war record in official voter pamphlet, 1997.

is hardly a major offense and it's not actually corruption either.

For such a tiny article you'd think it wouldn't be so hard to make it internally consistent.

nicksteel 2008-12-12 02:48:24 PM
It is not that the Democrats are more corrupt, but that the Republicans are better at it and don't get caught as often.

I would argue that both of the factions of the Corporatist-Republicrat Party are corrupt. That's the nature of 'pay to play' politics practiced in the real world. You give people too much power and not enough regulation, and they'll run wild with it. So, either strip the power (libertarians, holla!) or crush the corruption (greens, heyoooo).

Don't just finger point about which 'side' of the make-believe two party system is worse. Because then nothing gets better.
