Not only were most of those kind of cool, none of the comments that the author(s) put in to make fun of them were funny in any way.

I don't listen to Death Cab for Cutie but I like the album cover. The others are pretty terrible. However these days who the hell looks at an album cover when so much music is just digitally obtained?

/spends tedious amounts of time putting album cover on iTunes songs

I like the Meshuggah artwork. Looks like Maynard from Tool. And Septicflesh. And what's wrong with the James Taylor cover?

I like the idea of Pitchfork, but I've read so many well written but horribly uninformed rants on there that I can't take it seriously anymore.

Pitchfork: for people who don't really like music all that much, but who do like to act like an elitist hipster tool.

Kuoxasar 2008-12-11 09:34:09 PM
Pitchfork is full of tools BUT they have pointed me in the direction of some great music before, namely The Dismemberment Plan's "Emergency & I" and Hot Hot Heat's "Make Up the Breakdown." It's pretty evident though that once an artist has a mainstream following they can't evaluate the music for what it is anymore, just who is making it.

I take most of their reviews with a grain of salt. Extremely high rating? Probably not bad, but not really worth the effort to seek out. Anything in the 6.5 - 8.0 range is generally pretty good, though.

And for a site that gets a bad rap for being anti-mainstream, I thought their review of Chinese Democracy (which i can't find) was more than a bit fair, if still leaning more towards negative than positive. Personally, I was just relieved to find I wasn't the only one who thought writing for the album ceased in 1996, as every positive review of the album I've seen seems to come from people who haven't listened to any new music since UYI.

Philbigtime 2008-12-11 09:50:31 PM
I actually liked the Odelay cover, for exactly the reasons that they hated it.

Also, Brad Paisley - Play? C'mon, it's a farking Tele riding on a swing! Has any album ever had more appropriate cover art?

kaldec 2008-12-11 09:53:42 PM
I'm surprised pitchfork can keep kanye's dick out of their mouths long enough to do anything these days.

I like Rise Against and that cover art. I actually like alot of those. Some sucked, but alot of them didn't.

I think they took issue with the typography on that one. It definitely has the "Geocities in 96" vibe they attribute to it.

Elbow the worst? Get to fark, Pitchfork.

Death Cab for Cutie was cool, too.

only a couple of those covers was really 'bad'.

kind of a pathetic attempt at something,
whatever exactly that was.

Glitchwerks 2008-12-11 11:00:50 PM
Considering some of Merzbow's other album art, I would say "Dolphin Sonar" is terrific.

I mean if you really want chopped up body parts like heads and penises photographed and put on the cover, he's got it.

He's also got "Music For Bondage Performance" which came with a bunch of diagrams for various..."positions."

/I prefer Aube and Daniel Menche anyway...

d_the_sandman 2008-12-11 11:15:15 PM
Great. A funny article from a site known for denying any music is good, posted to a site known for denying any articles are funny.

I laughed at the majority of the captions, just like I love so many albums Pitchfork dismisses.

Moral of the story:

[power off]

This. I don't even know why I read Pitchfork anyway; the smugness just makes me stabby.

The Vanilla Ice cover was pretty fark-awful, other than that I didn't really see anything all that bad.

I don't know why, but for some reason I truly hate the cover of Mogwai's new one...love Mogwai, but that art really irritates me.

Pitchfork = for when 4chan has gotten boring

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-12-12 12:45:09 AM
some of those covers were actually pretty cool [IMHO, to my eyes, etc.]

yeah... there IS something weird/strange about that James Taylor cover. looks like it was manipulated / airbrushed[?] somehow....

This is one of the most accurate things I've ever read about Pitchfork.

Their reviews, especially for most well established artists are suspect at best, but their reviews provide a general running list of "shiat that's being released". It's hard to independently keep up with new releases.

Yeah, all those Lil Wayne mixtapes tend to get lost in the shuffle..thank GOD that Pitchfork is there to remind us...over, and over, and over

I would just like to say that while that Septicflesh album cover is kind of dumb, the album itself is pure win.

Posted this in a music thread yesterday, but it fits this one better so what the hell.

Love this cover - no name, no title, because there's really no point when it's just an image file in a music folder.

Had to look it up (snagged the album off emusic, don't have liner notes). Austrian artist named Ralph Manfreda.

Link (new window) (may be NSFW - didn't check everything out).

The band (Hollenthon) and album are fantastic, too, btw. Probably in my top 5 of the year.
