does this mean that those states aren't corrupt, or that the corrupt ones have a tighter control of the legal system?

I saw nothing about Buffalo, NY in there. Which isn't even a state anyway, but a city.

Ok, I call shennanigans. More convictions don't mean more corruption; it just means there was more people getting caught and being prosecuted and found guilty. I refuse to believe NJ wouldn't be at LEAST in the Top 10.

the8re 2008-12-11 03:55:07 PM
OK... so the point is it's based on convictions. So this is really a chart of the state who actually fight corruption.

Surprised that Mass isn't pink perfect since the judges are all pwned.

It shouldn't be based on population of the entire state it should be based on the number of public officials that state has.

SueDisco 2008-12-11 03:56:30 PM
DC would be super high on that list if there were figures available.

Nemo's Brother 2008-12-11 03:57:03 PM
Richmond, Va has to put Virginia in the top 10. I call shenanigans

AR55 2008-12-11 03:57:07 PM
If you look at how they rated the States, the article is pretty much full of fail. Convicting public people isn't a sign of Government corruption.

/bring out the fail pics.

farm machine 2008-12-11 03:57:55 PM
They are considering the total population size of the state and thats a rather poor indicator. How about limiting the bottom side of the equation to the total number of politicians in the state? Come back with those numbers and then lets see where the chips (buffalo or otherwise) fall.

Linux_Yes [TotalFark] 2008-12-11 03:58:03 PM
imagine all the ones who didn't get caught, in the greatest country on earth.

cefm 2008-12-11 03:58:25 PM
Horrible analysis of the data.

They went on convictions for corruption per-capita. That's an incredibly stupid way to treat the data.

North Dakota had something like 50, while FLORIDA was way out in the lead with over 800. Is there really a serious argument to be made that North Dakota is more corrupt than Florida based on that information?

This should have been (as I submitted it) a FLORIDA tag.

NJ is a big bag of corruption. You can't prosecute when the prosecutors on the side of the corrupt.

It's per 100,000 residents. Trust me the libs here in IL are much more corrupt. We also just have a much higher population so it make it look not as bad in comparison to bumbleskunk states with like 12 residents.

Finally, we're getting the recognition we deserve...

but our favorite state Florida leads the way in convictions...812. not even NY or NJ is close to that...

I call baloney on this. Rhode Island and Massachuseets should be in the top spot.

Remeber, people think Billy Bulger made it because of Whitey. Whitey porbably made it because of Billy.

And I agree with SueDisco. When I was in DC the local free rags were discussing people getting tickets when they had money on the meter.

Linux_Yes: too funny. conservative republican dominated states. who'da thunk???? LOL

You snapperhead, most of those states have Democrats at the federal level, especially the Dakotas: Johnson, Dorgan, Conrad; Pennsylvania is thick with Dems at all levels;
Jersey doesn't have a GOPer left in the state;
Ohio has lots of Dems locally and now in the senate and definitely at the Rep level;
West Virginia has never seen a GOPer;
Louisiana has always been solid Dem at the local level, and traditionally at the gubernatorial and senatorial level.

So where do you get this "republican dominated states" talk??

You're too stupid to live. Me thinks you deserve to be liquidated.

North Dakota is not conservative, at least not in a way your knee-jerk partisan mind can comprehend. And considering Blagojevich, shouldn't you kind of keep a low profile?

Here's a hint - when one party controls all the power in any government, corruption is likely to ensue. Democrat/Republican, it makes no difference.

etyer 2008-12-11 04:03:17 PM
It was on a per capita basis. Number of convictions against total population for 1997-2008.

Top 5 Convictions Overall Go:
1. Florida
2. New York
3. Texas
4. California
5. Illinois

Not red state-blue state thing. Just a power thing. Politicians are corrupt no matter where you are. Except for Nebraska. Either their politicians are that clean cut or too stupid to figure out how to be corrupt.

Chimperror2: Look at that. They are all blue states. The bluer the badder too. How apropos.

Jesus. I wish for one second, people would stop treating political parties like their goddamned favorite football team.

Democrats tend to have complete control over most large city government. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Being a democrat has little to do with it.

TheGreatGazoo 2008-12-11 04:05:12 PM
It's not the ones that were convicted that I worry about. It's the ones who aren't convicted.

I would say the states with the most convictions MIGHT be the least corrupt.

If 2 evenly populated states have 500 and 1000 corrupt politicians, and there are 450 and 50 convictions respectively, who is more corrupt?

Switchblades 2008-12-11 04:05:24 PM
Corvus: It shouldn't be based on population of the entire state it should be based on the number of public officials that state has.

THIS.

I think that's why ND ranks so high and Cali ranks so low - ND probably has far more elected officials per capita. (Ditto for states like New Jersey and - yes - Illinois.)

...something tells me that New Hampshire would fare very well in those measures.

I love this. Illinois busts Democratic Governor for corruption: Fark Independents cry "this proves there is a culture of corruption in Illinois, and Obama is clearly tainted!!!"

Bunch of Republican leaning states have high rates of conviction for corrupion: Fark Independents cry "this proves what a fine job Real Americans do fighting corruption!!"

There's really no pwnage like self-pwnage.

And I don't mean black. Cities have bigger governments and more money to skim, and they're immigration destinations so it's easier to manipulate large numbers of naive people.

Yep. It's pretty clear that the Governor of whatever the heck state "AK" is must be pretty farking sleazy--amirite? I mean, we all know that if there's corruption in a state then even Washington-based Senators must know all about it; imagine how closely involved the Governor must be!

Prosecutions of corruption is not a good way to measure corruption. Its possible, perhaps likely, that there would be less prosecutions of corruption in a relatively more corrupt society.
