Wow. You might want to see a gynecologist; you appear to have a near-terminal case of vaginal silicoidosis. I answered you literally. I wasn't telling you, "Worship the bailout or GTFO." So we gave a bunch of money to the auto industry. That's going to make the American people start buying cars from companies that they weren't buying from before the recession got this bad. Right?

Right?

Well, when no one seems to want to exercise option #1 (let 'em fail, preferably in a controlled manner) and option #2 has proven itself untenable (continue with the status quo), what's left but option #3 (nationalization)?

Well, other than the bank bailout method, IE "give away enormous sums of cash, plug your ears, close your eyes, and pretend everything will turn out a-ok".

tillerman35 2008-12-10 11:12:27 PM
They should have given everybody of "driving age" in the US a $800 credit towards the purchase of car made by the big 3. That way, they could make everybody feel good, and it wouldn't cost them a dime since nobody would use them anyway.

godofusa.com 2008-12-10 11:12:39 PM
This money is going to be pissed away. Let them file chapter 11, which would actually help the future of the companies.

whidbey [TotalFark] 2008-12-10 11:13:58 PM
This is horsesh*t.

Do we need any more proof that we're big business's b*tch

We bent over in 2008, all right.

First for the oil companies, then the banks, now the failing auto market. Nevermind that we should be making LESS cars, not more.

Let the fatcats take it for once. And the shareholders. Aren't they supposed to be the ones supporting the company financially?

I've been wondering that lately: Who the fark is buying a new car right now?

Yeah, yeah, I know the majority of farkers here are rolling in superfluous coin, but personally, they couldn't give me discount enough to take a car payment on right now.

And don't the new improved (invisible) buisness plans involve selling more cars?

I'm totally confused. I thought Republicans were pro-business? I mean they were with all these huge no bid contracts involving the invasion. But they're not big on government handouts to the American auto industry?

And I understand that Democrats tend to be pro-Union but aren't they also pro capitalist and pro global market and trade?

I mean if you can't survive making a quality product, and fair prices which people want to purchase or consume, then you eventually will fail. Isn't that what capitalism is about?

//Someone enlighten me

sarcastrophe 2008-12-10 11:16:44 PM
wiredmaverick: I dunno. I doubt anyone stupid enough to buy into this socialism shtick will even understand what nationalism entails

Why not? Nationalism is the pre-cursor to socialism as far as I can tell. If you're going to do it all in baby steps, that seems the most logical method.

saintstryfe 2008-12-10 11:16:56 PM
Seems reasonable. We can't have 3 million jobs evaporating. Even the possibility needs to be stopped. It's relatively small, considering what they were begging for. Let's see what happens before we all assume the worst.

sarcastrophe 2008-12-10 11:17:30 PM
Fart_Machine: Nationalization would actually be cheaper.

No shiat. Last I looked, the market cap is less than $2B for GM

Hiro's Protagonist 2008-12-10 11:17:49 PM
The money was pissed away a long time ago. Now to avoid deflation someone has to eat the losses quick. The government has chosen to eat them

Citigroup alone has half a trillion. ($150bn post-Lehman, $25bn free money, $300bn recent rescue, god knows how much from the Fed's facilities)

the Big 3 make the exact cars America wants, that's why they have the sales. Since gas has dropped large SUV sales are up 50% and Prius sales are down 50%. Stop blaming a company for your own choices

Falcc 2008-12-10 11:19:59 PM
Why don't they try nationalizing A car company? Pick whichever one is most likely to fail and buy it up. Keep the employees employed, institute higher fuel and safety standards, try out new fuel technologies, and once it's capable of running on it's own sell it to a private corporation at the higher going rate to recoop tax money.

If it's still going to colapse once the government has it they let it go for no more spending than they'd have had bailing it out, if it succeeds they recoop their loses. I admit the idea is farfetched and probably not feasible/legal, but you wouldn't have to look far for worse ideas.

Occam's Chainsaw [TotalFark] 2008-12-10 11:20:07 PM
saintstryfe: We can't have 3 million jobs evaporating.

So 1 million in every field is perfectly acceptable, but a 3 million chicken little worst case in one field is madness?

saintstryfe: Seems reasonable. We can't have 3 million jobs evaporating. Even the possibility needs to be stopped. It's relatively small, considering what they were begging for. Let's see what happens before we all assume the worst.

That's just it. It's too small. It can't possibly save them, at least not GM and Chrysler.

I don't think we can give them enough money to save them.
