(Media Matters) Obvious Bill O'Reilly could read the Army Field Manual to learn what's in it. Or he could use his preferred method: making up whatever he wants to make the scary liberals go away. Wonder which one he'll choose?   (mediamatters.org) divider line 95

I believe his response would be something along the lines of :

"Fark it, we'll do it live"

wrong. "zombie hitler" at least implies that at one point hitler was killed. when media matters writes down what someone says, they are worse than if god was made out of 50 hitlers.

I was going to say something about O'Reilly, but then I got distracted by God, Hitler and zombies. Made me think of, "Dead Snow," the next greatest foreign film ever made.

I suspect he will call Media Matters a bunch of "smear merchants" that are a "trillion times worse than Adolf Hitler" and then claim that he was given a copy of the real Field Manual because the Army trusts him because he's just "looking out for the folks".

DamnYankees [TotalFark] 2008-12-10 08:34:47 PM
Bill O'Reilly should volunteer to be waterboarded.

Karey, the girl on Mythbusters, did it for the show - and she couldn't stand it for very long. She was farked up - strange to see on that show.

Bill make stuff up and claim it to be true?

I, for one, am shocked. Shocked AND appalled.

That wasn't waterboarding. It was the Chinese water torture. Waterboarding is way worse, actually.

Watching that still really made me uncomfortable. Even though she knew she could immediately end it, she still suffered a major breakdown...*shudder*.

In fairness to Bill, he's probably just citing the article in The Paris Business Review. It's not Bill's fault if they got their facts wrong.

But apparently it was a purely psychological thing, in large part triggered by the restraints, as opposed to the water itself actually being physically painful.

That was an interesting show.

This, by the way, is what waterboarding is-

A good deal worse than what Kari went through.

You disappoint me. I expected someone to say something like "I'd water her boards!!1"

In any case, I think we can all agree that water-boarding is not cool.

Churchill2004: A good deal worse than what Kari went through.

Where's that?
I saw a former Navy Seal do it for a report on waterboarding, but the guys doing it to him would only hold the wet rag over his nose/mouth for a few seconds at a time and pour some water, then they'd pull the rag away. They just kept doing it and shouting questions at him. This went on for 20 minutes or so. That was very different from the video I saw of Christopher Hitchens being waterboarded. It looked more like your picture. He only lasted 12 seconds.

1. We were attacked by terrorists.
2. Thankfully we didn't have you pussies in charge.
3. We waterboarded and used torture. IT'S A WAR. BAD THINGS HAPPEN IN WARS.
4. Information was successfully obtained.

aaaand....

5. We caught Osama Bin Laden.

So there. How do you argue against that? We caught the guy. End of story. The ends justified the means.

Yup. There's a good description here. Specifically, angling the head so the sinuses/etc. fill with water and coughing only makes things worse is what breaks people so quickly. Like other torture techniques, it's good at getting the victim to say whatever the torturers want them to say, which is different from getting them to tell the truth.

Back in 1968, the United States Army court martialed a soldier for waterboarding a Vietnamese captive. We're morally regressing by not banning this practice entirely.

Yep, we are still waiting for that apology. Of course, he is a lying whackadoodle shill, so don't hold your breath.

The Army Field Manual is just a goddamn peace of paper.

It's the rusted chains that are affixed to a mighty eagle. we should not allow our majestic flight to be weighted down by such archaic quaintness.

Look, we like in a country with walls. And do you know what keeps these wall afloat? Why, it is the moral and ethical obligation of our brave intelligence agencies to go off into foreign countries and torture the living fark out of anyone or everyone that we feel may or may not have the capacity to pose a threat to our vital overseas interests.

We are in a new type of war, fighting a new type of people, civilians.

To defeat evil, you must allow yourself to be evil. We must fight this war from the shadows and do things our grandparents would not condone. The gloves are off and it's U.S. vs. them, which side are YOU on?

Klingon Penis: Believe Me, It's Torture

Good article, but it was a false dichotomy.

For example Christopher Hitchens only went under for a couple of seconds. These farks are tortured for years.

Also, those doing the mock-interrogation have a legal obligation to ensure that Hitchens wouldn't die. Lowever value detainees, not so much.

Plus, I would imagine that the level of treatment is more harsh when the act is executed without the oversight of the press and a camera is not capturing the moment. I notice a distinct lack of nudity, urination and peroneal-strikes in that image.

I agree that water-boarding is torture, but it is only one of the many farked up things we do. The neo-con talking point appears to be that this is the end all bastion of the most violent acts we inflict... in reality it's only a portion of a much larger paradigm.

Where did Hitch allege that his experience was identical to a detainee's?
The fact that he was traumatized after just a few seconds should illustrate to anyone capable of reading between the lines just what prolonged exposure would do.

Media Matters could honestly report what people say and give decent counter points, Or they could use their preferred method: Distorting what people say, using out of context quotes and misrepresenting information in order to promote an agenda.

I agree with his message, but I am irritated by his voice.

He uses the same technique that his opposition uses when they state that they were water-boarded as part of their Special Forces training so it is not "that bad."

They did something at a reduced level to prove that it's effects are such-and-such.

It read more as a publicity stunt than a critical analysis of the process.
