Solid State Vittles 2008-12-10 05:13:43 PM
Sad indeed. I didn't realize what a dearth of good albums came out this year until I saw that list.

harryasaboy 2008-12-10 05:23:07 PM
I didn't realize Lucinda Williams released a new one in 08. Will add it to all her others shortly.

Newsflash: creating good music isn't dependent upon youth.

If you disagree, the ghost of Johnny Cash will shove his rusty cage up your ass.

Fraggler [TotalFark] 2008-12-10 05:27:54 PM
Glaring omissions:

The Mars Volta - The Bedlam In Goliath
Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree
Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - Angles

nice to see No Age and TV on the Radio on there. Considering this was RS, I figured it's top ten would be nothing but hasbeens.

for what it's worth, my list:

1. No Age: Nouns
2. TV on the Radio - Dear Science,
3. Wire - Object 47
4. Auburn Lull: Remain Civil Twilight
5. Darker My Love - 2
6. Primal Scream - Beautiful Future
7. Grails - Doomsayer's Holiday
8. Mogwai - Hawk is Howling
9. Benoit Pioulard - Temper
10. Grails - Take Refuge in Clean Living
11. Portishead - 3
12. Boris: Smile (US version. Japanese version sounds like demos. Though 2 of the tracks in the US version are badly edited)
13. Transitional: Nothing Real Nothing Absent
14. Valet: Naked Acid (nice, weird psychedelic-folk stuff)
15. Retribution Gospel Choir (s/t)
16. Spiritualized: Songs in A&E
17. NIN: Ghosts
18. NIN: The Slip

Why are you going to go out and buy her album if you're just going to throw it in the toilet?

/despises everything she's recorded since "Car Wheels."

uhmmm, not sure about that, as far as rock N roll goes. *THERE IS EXCEPTIONS** but usually a rocker over 30 keeps pumping inferior carbon copies of their earlier good stuff

I dont mean by that that they should stop recording but I havent heard the new metallica, mellencamp, Brian Wilson, G N R or Stephen Malkmus on the list, but im sure my theory applies

irockalot 2008-12-10 05:43:04 PM
The Malkmus album rocks.

/still hates RS lists.

czerno 2008-12-10 05:43:57 PM
The Slip and Ghosts were both amazing. Much better than anything Lil farking Wayne could put out.

seveword 2008-12-10 05:44:55 PM
fark your boring, cliched music by people who are no longer talented and pay the losers at Rolling Stone to put them on their list. fark it, I say.

jasonmicron 2008-12-10 05:47:00 PM
NiN wasn't around in 1988. LOLOLOLOLOL

Ant 2008-12-10 05:47:51 PM
The new Raconteurs CD is the only one on that list that I've even heard. I must be getting really old.

Illidan 2008-12-10 05:48:15 PM
'08 albums I love, in no particular order:

Kalmah: For the Revolution
Communic: Payment of Existence
Manilla Road: Voyager
Torture Squad: Hellbound
Exmortus: In Hatred's Flame
Nine Inch Nails: Ghosts

Yeah, big metal fan (everything but Ghosts counts). Didn't like Death Magnetic (though the Guitar Hero version wasn't as obnoxious as the studio release). Liked some of Vampire Weekend's songs alot, but I have to like 99% of an album to think it great.

busy chillin' 2008-12-10 05:48:15 PM
For what it's worth:

10. Grampall Jookabox
9. Flight of the Conchords
8. Conor Oberst
7. Cold War Kids
6. Mogwai
5. Joe Pug
4. The Black Keys
3. Bob Dylan
2. TV on the Radio
1. Foals

Am I the only one that doesn't get the hype over Vampire Weekend and MGMT?

Not sure if I am too snobby, or not snobby enough to enjoy their sh*t

PerfectlyCromulent 2008-12-10 05:54:31 PM
40 Jonas Brothers - A Little Bit Longer

Just when I though that RS couldn't fail any harder...

Solid State Vittles 2008-12-10 06:04:56 PM
busy chillin': 4. The Black Keys

I love the Black Keys, but I'd say their latest is probably their worst album to date.

420greg 2008-12-10 06:05:26 PM
10.Alterbridge
9. The Mars Volta
8. FloBots
7. Pennywise
6. Judas Priest
5. Offspring
4. Seether
3. Buck Cherry
2. Theory of a Deadman
1. Shinedown

Kublai Khan [TotalFark] 2008-12-10 06:09:54 PM
If I made a list of the top 50 music magazines in 2008, RS wouldn't be on it.

Architecture Of Aggression 2008-12-10 06:10:28 PM
Opeth - Watershed
Children of Bodom - Blooddrunk (not that great, but their best in a while)
Trivium - Shogun
Supercontinent - Vaalbara
Meshuggah - Obzen
Bloodbath - Ublessing the Purity
Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery
Gojira - The Way of All Flesh

harryasaboy: I didn't realize Lucinda Williams released a new one in 08. Will add it to all her others shortly.

It's a good album. I also recommend Susan Tedeschi's 'Back to the River' if you haven't heard it.

Kliffoth [TotalFark] 2008-12-10 06:13:54 PM
Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God

Opeth - Watershed

Kalmah - For the Revolution

DeathByGeekSquad 2008-12-10 06:14:49 PM
For what it's worth:

10. Faith +1
9. Blur
8. Iron Maiden
7. Rolling Stones
6. Pearl Jam
5. My Chemical Romance
4. Fallout Boy
3. Beck
2. Coldplay
1. Creed

harryasaboy 2008-12-10 06:15:04 PM
Uzzah: Why are you going to go out and buy her album if you're just going to throw it in the toilet?

Because I won't. Car Wheels is her best, but I don't share your dislike of her newer stuff.

Also glad to see Ryan Adams made the list with the Cardinals. Have it already. But like all those songs better live.

I'd never heard a Lil Wayne song till all these 'best of' lists started coming out, so thought I'd check one out - Lollipop.

WTF? Is this really what Americans are buying these days? It's barely even music - and I don't say that as hip-hop hater, I'm not going to justify anything, but come on? This is what people like? Serious, actual music critics included? I think the hipster 'it's cool to like shiat music' thing is getting out of hand.

Every generation has tone-deaf mouth-breathers who pretend to be experts on music and/or entertainment.

Slim Whitman sold a lot of that yodelling crap.

Tell me about it. I did some casual proofing work for a pretty major (by NZ standards) music magazine last year/earlier this year, and I couldn't believe the crap the permanent staff would put on. When the graphic designer kept playing Britney's Blackout album over and over, loudly, on her earbuds, I'd had enough.

TV on the Radio - Halfway Home. one of my favorite tracks of the year, though not entirely indicative of the album's sound.

I'm honestly surprised they're not bigger than they are.

Gunny Highway 2008-12-10 07:32:34 PM
Children of Bodom - Blood Drunk
Scars on Broadway - Self Titled
Mudvayne - The New Game

Been thinking about my top 2008 albums recently so it seems a good opportunity to share.

Coldplay: Viva La Vida

Destroyer: Trouble In Dreams
[for those who don't know Destroyer, think:
Vocals: David Bowie plus Bob Dylan
lyrics: almost stream of consciousness, lots of cool one-liners
Music: indie pop/rock]

Fleet Foxes: Fleet Foxes [vinyl LP + EP]
[for those who don't know Fleet Foxes, think:
Vocals: very similar to Jim James of My Morning Jacket, but different [more pure, less throaty]
Lyrics: (sorry, hard to describe)
Music: Indie, somewhat oldschool [i mean like old old folk blues], folky / pop-rock, great vocal harmonies

Gratch 2008-12-10 08:05:42 PM
Doubt I even bought 10 albums in 2008. A couple brilliant ones I did get that weren't on the list:

- Opeth's Watershed
- Ohgr's Devil In My Details

List reminds me I still need to pick up that TVotR disc.
