(Denver Post) Sad You know times are tough when an average guy can't afford to power his 650,000 Xmas lights so he has to sell the original spaceship from Forbidden Planet to pay the bills   (denverpost.com) divider line 63

Whoa, you had 650,000 Christmas lights and tampered with the original packaging?

That was less than mint of you bro, less than mint.

Sorry but you know the Dork Code. Meet us tommorow for your obligatory historically-accurate smiting with foam weaponry in a public place.

This guy is definitely going to excel as a trader.

Should have gone LED. You can power 650K of those babies for only a couple hundred a month in electricity.

/went LED this year.
//if they last ten years, I will make back the cost of the damn lights

There's a house in Austin that sets up a crazy display and you can walk around and look at it all since some of it is in their back yard. Their electric meter spins so fast, that' my favorite part of the whole thing. They have a tip jar not to far from the electric meter.

Seriously. Embrace that dream, man.

You know he's made a couple of kids go "wow... if he can do that, I can make my dreams come true, too!"

Most of those dreams will probably be dumb, but hey, any sort of motivation and hope is good these days.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist, but apparently you have to be smarter than a rocket collector.

Here are some pics of the street that house is on. All the houses do it up big, but the one I mentioned is my favorite each year.

We decided to purchase the annual pass.

Okay, might be tough for those of you who find math hard...

If using old fashioned bulbs cost X on your electricity bill, but using LEDs cost Y, which is less than X, then take the cost of the LED bulbs, divide by the difference in electrical cost, and you will have the number of years which it will take to recoup the original purchase price of the LEDs.

You'd be surprised. A friend of mine in Portland, OR used to clear about 40k doing downtown lights, homes, and the Shilo Inns headquarters. I helped him occasionally. Some damn cold, wet, dirty work but people will pay some bank for someone else to do it.

I saw a house last week that was lit up like the Griswald's and had this thing where it made the lights flash to the music. Only problem was you could not hear the music unless your window was down, and without it, it looked like the lights were just randomly going on and off.

/It was weird.

You wont recoup any money, you still have to pay for the electricity, but you wont pay as much. You will spend less than you would have with normal lights, but you wont make any money back.

Yeah, it's a fairly important movie prop, for science fiction fans; especially since it also appeared in some Twilight Zone episodes. It's seems strange to me that this guy bought it but then just hung it in his garage. I like to think that I would have at least put it in some kind of case or display area, to better protect and preserve it.
