czmilosz: Eric Johnson?

Yup. I'm not even aware of a cover by Satriani or anything.

Ya, um, Satriani didn't do Cliffs of Dover, Eric Johnson did.

Frankly, I don't think the melody is terribly original so I could understand if it really was just an accident, which Coldplay is saying.

that said, it wouldn't be the first time Coldplay was accused of heisting other people's shiat:

COLDPLAY frontman CHRIS MARTIN has admitted the song FIX YOU on the group's new album is a copy of ELBOW's track GRACE UNDER PRESSURE. (new window)

COLDPLAY - COLDPLAY: 'WE STOLE ELBOW'S SOUND'

COLDPLAY frontman CHRIS MARTIN has admitted the song FIX YOU on the group's new album is a copy of ELBOW's track GRACE UNDER PRESSURE.

The CLOCKS group has already confessed their new disc X+Y is heavily influenced by electronic stars KRAFTWERK, with guitarist JONNY BUCKLAND saying, "We've never so directly stolen off anyone before. We've never paid for our plagiarism."

Martin has warned fans Fix You will sound very similar to those who have listened to British band Elbow's 2003 album CAST OF THOUSANDS.

He says, "Fix You" came directly from Elbow's Grace Under Pressure.

"I think their Cast Of Thousands album is one of the very few albums over the past five years that I have played in its entirety many times."

I dunno...they played clips of both Cold Play and Satriani on "Bob & Tom" this morning, and they sounded pretty damn close.

Then they played them AT THE SAME TIME and you'd swear Satriani was IN Cold Play!!

MaxxLarge: This pretty much sums it up. (w/video)

Wow, that last bit is pretty cut and dried. When you can play the original (Satriani) over the copy (Coldplay) and it sounds identical I think Satriani has a case.

czmilosz: Eric Johnson?

I came in here to same that...

paulseta [TotalFark] 2008-12-09 05:09:50 PM
It is a rip-off, Coldplay will lose the case.

It's not just that they have a history of ripping off many, many other artists. It's not just that you can actually overlay the two songs in question and have them basically fit.

It's not just that the chords, melody, tempo and general feel are basically the same.

It's that Coldplay have said again and again in print that they rip-off other artists. It's a common thing for UK bands to do, and to brag about it. Satch, on the other hand, is an American, and they take a dim view of someone nicking their inspiration and subsequent monetary rewards.

It will be interesting to see if other bands that Coldplay have ripped off decide to sue as well. My Bloody Valentine, Bowie etc have all had substantial portions of their songs lifted for Coldplay songs (*)

(*) Don't bother mentioning Kraftwerk - that was one of the rare cases where permission was sought and attained from the band.

Satriani's a good guy and very talented. See him live if you haven't.

Coldpay are a bunch of unoriginal hacks. I'm willing to bet they lifted the song hoping no one would notice.

Hell, when they play the two together, it actually sounds better IMO than when they play separately. Pretty funny if you ask me.

zvoidx 2008-12-09 06:50:29 PM
FTA (Coldplay): "If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him...."

It's not about intent. If you are a musician and are exposed to music that you are not necessarily paying attention to and your subconscious absorbs it and you later process it as your own work...it's still infringement.

The Dover biatch

So there stood Matthew Arnold and this girl
With the cliffs of England crumbling away behind them,
And he said to her, 'Try to be true to me,
And I'll do the same for you, for things are bad
All over, etc., etc.'
Well now, I knew this girl. It's true she had read
Sophocles in a fairly good translation
And caught that bitter allusion to the sea,
But all the time he was talking she had in mind
The notion of what his whiskers would feel like
On the back of her neck. She told me later on
That after a while she got to looking out
At the lights across the channel, and really felt sad,
Thinking of all the wine and enormous beds
And blandishments in French and the perfumes.
And then she got really angry. To have been brought
All the way down from London, and then be addressed
As a sort of mournful cosmic last resort
Is really tough on a girl, and she was pretty.
Anyway, she watched him pace the room
And finger his watch-chain and seem to sweat a bit,
And then she said one or two unprintable things.
But you mustn't judge her by that. What I mean to say is,
She's really all right. I still see her once in a while
And she always treats me right. We have a drink
And I give her a good time, and perhaps it's a year
Before I see her again, but there she is,
Running to fat, but dependable as they come.
And sometimes I bring her a bottle of Nuit d' Amour.

I just lost complete respect for Satriani. I just did. All music eventually starts to sound the same.
Katy Perry sounds like Missing Persons or the Go Go's. She doesn't kiss girls but Sobule does.
She Wants Revenge sounds like Joy Division.
Madonna She's not be has the same beat as Donna Summers Bad Girl the beginning anyway.
I mean really it could be because I am just older...But..there does come a time when it all starts to sound the same.

That was Samuel Morse, and the song is now used as the theme music to Top Gear.
