He makes a logical error by assuming that retreat is not progress. Retreat is as important as playing defense in football. The side that plays defense and offense better will win.

People in a defensive mode do start thinking for a change. Right now, they should be thinking about reducing credit card debt, paying off other bills, moving assets away from higher risk to lower risk, and even getting unique control over assets, where they were willing to have shared control in past.

Good defense means not stupidly trusting the government to watch your back, something they are not good in doing in the best of times. So in bad times, you want insurance from somebody more reliable.

People on defense start to stockpile, and yes, hoard things that might be in shortage. And while they become less social with the government, they become more social with each other. Because when you protect yourself, you are more inclined to protect others as well.

And protecting is generally better than having to defend. Protecting means being proactive, and not waiting until you have to defend.

So yes, when people are afraid, they probably don't think about doing what they normally do. But then again, it doesn't mean that they aren't thinking.

You mean like "ACC is a marxist conspiracy meant to cost the developed world trillions, destroy the global economy and bring the world to a UN-controlled totalitarian state where they make us eat mercury-filled lightbulbs and jail us for not sorting our recyclables."

Was that the kind of fear you meant?

Let's be so afraid of the economy that we hunker down with our families, never going out to eat, never buying anything new, and never spending a single dollar on anything that isn't cricital to our survival.

Let's make sure that we consume so little that the country literally runs out of things to do, and the dollar stalls, then falls.

Let's grow vegetable gardens, learn how to sew, stop using airplanes, and stop driving cars.

Let's start living off the land again, and watch as the cities finally crumble to dust, with the wind blowing through windowless skyscraper shells, and recall a time in history where we knew prosperity...

...a time we were too afraid of to ever return to again.

/happy holidays. Remember, your gift purchase enables a worker to have a job, feed his family, and go to church.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Why do the TSA care about proper I'd for passengers? The 9/11 hijackers were properly documented?

Why do they care about liquids? Two World Wars won last century and we're made to be afraid of too much toothpaste on a plane.

Because when you protect yourself, you are more inclined to protect others as well.

The problem is, at least in this economy in the US, is that people's idea of "protecting" themselves is well intentioned but ultimately pointless, and sadly many are wearing it as a badge of honor. Anecdotal point - I was told by someone recently that they "won't buy microbrews when they go out because they're too expensive, and will buy Pabst instead". The price delta being $1.50 a beer, which isn't much, even for low income individuals. And you know damned well that $1.50 (or $3 or $6 saved) isn't going in to savings of any kind.

I heard similar stories from people during the time gas was >$4 gallon. People would not go to the beach because "they can't afford it any longer". Except the delta between $2/gallon and $4/gallon with a 10MPG vehicle, from here to our coastline, round trip, is a delta of about $15. If you can't afford $15 difference, then you have no business going in the first place. And when I've pointed this out, I get an "I don't care what you say - I'm saving money!" response in return.

People think "I'm saving money", but not "does it matter". Now all of these little things where people are cutting costs on insigificant items ultimately hurt other businesses, it's echoed in the media, people become more like this, etc... vicious cycle. Hoarding is what causes problems, and the general population is too stupid to realize it. Most just want to do something to make it feel like they're doing something.

Obviously the financial situation is a lot more complicated than that, but it's just one narrow aspect I've observed. People just worry about the wrong things.

Why would Piter De Vris be reciting the litany against fear? His schtick (in the movie) was:

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.
It is by the juice of saphoo that thoughts acquire speed,
the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning.
It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

spreading Fear of W is still fearmongering. His whole campaign was built around posting a picture of W over McCain's face.
