Not many did. Opening weekend it lost out to The Big Chill and Amityville 3-D (seriously?). Thanksgiving weekend it did hit #1, but then dropped to #2 and then to #6 in the next couple of weeks. Its total box office take ($19M) was less than Return of the Jedi's opening weekend ($23M). My source was Box Office Mojo (pops).

It's just one of those movies whose genius was realized later.

Scut Farkus! What a rotten name! There he stood, between us and the alley. Scut Farkus staring out at us with his yellow eyes. He had yellow eyes! So, help me, God! Yellow eyes!

It's a little known fact that Siskel did not die of cancer as was reported, in reality he died of soap poisoning. The true nature of his death was suppressed to spare his family the shame.

Goddammit I miss Gene Siskel.

Watching this movie is a lot like masturbation: damn near every one does it, and few will freely admit to it.

I've never seen it.

I've seen parts of it, of course, and I know most of the pop culture references to it, but I've never actually watched it all the way through.

I've just never cared enough to seek it out. Or not change the channel.

One of my favorite movies of all time.

And the number two Christmas movie behind It's A Wonderful Life.

One of the greatest nostalgic films of all time. (America 1940s)

Woody Allen's "Radio Days" is very similar.

Only those who are utterly ignorant of American culture would have contempt for either of these magnificent films.

My dad says this movie is so entertaining for him because the writer nailed it.

On an aside, the EXACT thing happened to me the Christmas morning my dad gave me a pellet/bb gun. I shot across the yard at a metal box and the bb came right back and hit me in the glasses. Yes, I can confirm the icicle excuse is a viable one.

Love it as well. And "The Bishop's Wife". Not "The Preacher's Wife", the original. They never show it. Finally bought the DVD, but there's something special about catching an old movie on TV.

I saw The Big Lebowski opening weekend with my parents (I was in high school at the time). We made up half of the audience. I don't think I've heard my parents laugh that much ever before or since. I wanted to see it again, but my friends wouldn't go, they thought it'd be lame.

I like National Lampoons Christmas Vacation better... still a good movie though.

My wife has never seen either, believe it or not... of course she has seen Elf about 100 times.

And yea, that movie sucked donkey balls.

NOT a hater and it would be on my Top 15/20 list of Christmas movies.

I just wish it was a little tighter, it drags in places.

And the stories that Shepard wrote are even funnier than the movie.

Kinda wish Siskel was still around too, he might balance out some of Ebert's more biased tentencies of late.

Now, I had heard that word at least ten times a day from my old man. He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master.
