I'm sure a reliable informant told them that nuns all have habits.

Whoever thinks the Catholics are non-violent, doesn't know squat about history. Worst terrorists and rip-off artists the world has ever known!

Brisco: Whoever thinks the Catholics are non-violent, doesn't know squat about history. Worst terrorists and rip-off artists the world has ever known!

Pay attention:

"Among those labeled as terrorists: two Catholic nuns, a former Democratic congressional candidate, a lifelong pacifist and a registered lobbyist. One suspect's file warned that she was "involved in puppet making and allows anarchists to utilize her property for meetings."

I know you really want to hate Catholics and all, but try not to let your bigotry get in the way here. This is COINTELPRO dressed up in a new suit and given cell phones. it was wrong then, it's wrong now and if you can't see that, then STFU because you aren't helping.

TFA: Among those labeled as terrorists: ... a former Democratic congressional candidate ... and a registered lobbyist.

So half of the target groups deserved to be spied on.

submitter: Maryland police admit that they bugged a silent vigil held by a group of Catholic nun

The article seems to be saying that the federal government spied on silent vigils while Maryland spied on unspecified nun-related activity.

Federal government gets the fail for listening to the moment of silence. State government gets the fail for having its spy constantly typing reports while everybody else is trying to conduct business.

if the government (state or federal) is going to spy on us, let's hope they keep sending out stupid people to do the spying.

COINTELPRO.

that's a wikipedia link to get you started, in case anyone was wondering what the hell I was talking about.

Now - is that program making a come back with the 'war on terror'? I have no idea. However....cases like this one give me reason for concern. i'm just saying that if you get involved in any sort of community organizing, look around and pay attention to the crowd.

I wasn't so amused by the Catholic aspect as I was about the fact that they were bugging a silent vigil. Maybe they hoped to catch someone breaking wind.

A government program used to counter intelligence? It appears to be working as promised.

Any kid that was ever in a class with a nun for a teacher can tell you lots of stories about being terrorized by a nun.

Don't you know? Pacifists are dangerous! They might write a really stiff letter and start yelling in the streets! We can't allow that.

\Pacifist terrorists. Seriously, what's next? Arresting an "anarchist leader"? A gay man's girlfriend?

maxheck 2008-12-07 03:12:39 PM
If you want to kick the absurdity up a notch, consider that the Erlich administration was also spying on Quaker anti-death-penalty groups. (sorry for the crappy link, baltimoresun.com changed their site around and their search engine sucks.)

Quakers. Anti-death-penalty quakers no less.

Next month revelations will come out about their spying on Jainists suspected of terrorism.

schattenteufel [TotalFark] 2008-12-07 03:13:26 PM
Pacifists are such troublemakers.

Dwight_Yeast 2008-12-07 03:13:44 PM
Spying on Quakers? That's farking low.

And really, all you have to do is ask them and they'll tell you what they're up to.

/It's not that Quakers don't lie; they're just not very good at it.

That_Dude 2008-12-07 03:15:59 PM
I am concerned about why they are spying on nuns, but you have to admit one thing: Any group dumb enough to bug a silent vigil is probably too incompetent to do anything too destructive.

Mouser 2008-12-07 03:16:25 PM
Nadine Bloch, 47, runs workshops for protest groups that seek corporate responsibility and builds huge papier-mache puppets often used in street marches. Her terrorism file indicates she participated in a Taking Action for Animals conference in Washington on July 16-18, 2005.

You gotta keep an eye on those giant puppet-head people, you know. Almost as dangerous as fursuiters.

/Almost.

Quakers would be the second to last group that any govt. body should worry about. Any group that forgives an arsehole who killed their children are not trouble makers.

Lacerated Spleen 2008-12-07 03:17:17 PM
I can see the Democratic Congressman as a terrorist, but Catholic nuns? Come on! Of course there was Sister Hilda in the seventh grade. She terrorized the hell out of me.

That_Dude: I am concerned about why they are spying on nuns, but you have to admit one thing: Any group dumb enough to bug a silent vigil is probably too incompetent to do anything too destructive.

Before the silence begins, somebody always stands up to tell the group why they are there. It is supposed to help the participants focus their thoughts.

that being said, bugging nuns (talking or not) is a stupid idea. Nuns can be mean and nasty, but not a threat to the govt.

You're thinking of the Amish, but close enough.

Quakers don't wear funny clothes or avoid modern technology.

They are almost militantly pacifist though. There is no situation in which a Quaker would advocate a violent response. So looking for terrorists among them is like looking for good BQ pork in Mecca.

Who the fark spies on Quakers? They're like one of the most harmless, benevolent groups out there. Oh, that's right, the perpetually paranoid American government. Sheesh.

Nixon was an Evangelical Quaker, a sub-sect that goes against pretty much all the teaching of the faith. They have preachers and actively try to win converts, which if you know anything about Quakerism are both really bizarre.

since you obviously did not read the article, it was a state agency in Maryland that spied on Quakers, not the US Government. Your rant was wasted.

Kevin72 2008-12-07 03:32:37 PM

They bugged a silent vigil? "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you!"

This reminds me of the time on Reno911 that they busted the mime and said "You have the right to remain silent", and the mime just looked at them.

Bestbank Tiger: Crap like this is why people don't trust the government to use surveillance powers in an intelligent and responsible manner.

Rule: Every power that is granted to the government is abused.

You can call civil rights protections, coddling criminals and enabling terrorism all you want, but in the bigger picture the greater crime is that the police and security services when granted extra powers shamelessly abuse them. So whose fault is that?
