We'll murder them all amid laughter and merriment;
except for the few we take home to experiment.

You probably shouldn't eat the poisoned ones from the park.

filth [TotalFark] 2008-12-07 01:58:46 PM
Just think of them as urban dove.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-12-07 02:01:34 PM
Not too many pigeons where I live. I'll have to go with seagull or pelican.

Now we just have to move onto roof rabbit, and we'll be ready for tough economic times...

Ive always wondered why the homeless weren't feasting on pigeon, squirrel, and Canada goose.

Squab is good eatin'.

Now that is just fowl.
Completely unpheasant.

PrincessOfPenguins 2008-12-07 02:55:22 PM
But call it squab and you won't be able to afford it...

Dr.Zom 2008-12-07 02:55:24 PM
I served squab at a barbecue once. Not much meat. People will eat squab if you tell them it's squab.

/tell them it's also called pigeon later

The preferred nomenclature is "Rock Doves."

Or "City Chickens".

Or "Flying Rats".

The small game birds can make a great alternative to turkey at Christmas

Underwear and socks also make a great alternative to a Wii console wrapped up and under the tree.

SumoJeb 2008-12-07 02:57:07 PM
I think I will stick to grouse, duck and goose.

NutWrench 2008-12-07 03:00:24 PM
"Don't you know what squab is?"
"Of course, mother. It's a bird . . . it's a fowl of some kind."
"It's a pigeon."
"Wait a minute, mother. Are you trying to tell me that I just ate a goddamn flying RAT with tarragon cream sauce? A gutter eagle, a farking SEWER FALCON with hearts of artichoke?"

WFern 2008-12-07 03:02:45 PM
Regardless of how well cooked they are, I'd be a little too concerned about the plethora of diseases, sometimes crippling or fatal, that they can carry in numbers.

TheChemist 2008-12-07 03:02:52 PM
Pigeon is okay. My experience with was a rather bland, dry bird. Not a lot of meat. It's not going to induce vomiting unless you're particularly sensitive to the the fact that, "ZOMG! Is not CHIKEN!"

Iron Chef Scottish 2008-12-07 03:04:19 PM
Wood pigeon is delicious. That is all.

CrispFlows 2008-12-07 03:04:35 PM
I much prefer the rock cornish hen, also known as "Poussin"

Occasionally, I make a joke to my wife I feel like having some poussin!

2 pounds of cute tasty goodness.

RaynDrahps 2008-12-07 03:05:10 PM
Didn't the great depression almost wipe out the carrier pigeon because it became a primary food source where the joke was that you just had to simply aim your gun in the air when they flew over and you'd get 2 or 3 for dinner?

Fano 2008-12-07 03:06:02 PM
They can be a bit tricky to catch though:

media.bigoo.ws

Yeah I know, but Sylvester calls him a squab all the time.

Brave Sir Robin 2008-12-07 03:06:19 PM
you take a sparrow and stuff it inside a rat and stuff that inside a pigeon

wrap in as large a piece of foil as you can scavenge and cook over an barrel fire for a half-hour per pound...so around 15 minutes, and voila, delicious and economical sparatgeon!

Iron Chef Scottish 2008-12-07 03:06:31 PM
WFern Nobody is suggesting that the urban species is fit for the dinner table. Wood pigeon is the subject of TFA.

neenerist 2008-12-07 03:07:01 PM
Blackbirds: mummsie would cook them by the pot when I was a sprog. Tasty.

Fano 2008-12-07 03:07:52 PM
They don't go down easy, either:

The Latin name for that species is "Columba Steve Martinus".

clownyclownzomby 2008-12-07 03:16:37 PM
Fano: There was a legendary thread once concerning that photo. I'll try to find it when I get to my office. I think the term used to describe the pigeon's condition was "reverse-stevemartinization."

You know, the reason that there are pigeons in the US is because they were brought over for food and some escaped.

Pigeons are just free-range squab. It's all about the packaging.

I'm getting a kick out of these replies....
Seriously, just shot 2 morning doves apx. 2 min ago (not as much meat as wood pigeons, but I'll take what I can get) and yes I will eat them.

ironic_followup 2008-12-07 03:37:45 PM
Pigeons are actually pretty tasty. They have more flavor than chicken turkey, although perhaps a bit more game-y. Sort of similar to comparing venison to roast beef.

I'd stay away from the flying rats of the city though...

Calvin Coolidge 2008-12-07 03:43:48 PM
Caller: Hell, ya ought to try it sometime, I tell ya man, it's good eating. Possum, raccoon, even zebra meat, cooks up pretty good.

Lazlow:
Er, do you have anything else to say, or...

Caller: Pigeons. Pigeons are good too. Sometimes, they come with notes attached, it's like...a fortune cookie with wings. Squirrels...squirrels is not so good, they...taste like goldfish, meat's real stringy...ya know what I mean?

Angry Inch 2008-12-07 03:45:19 PM
I started hunting when I was stationed in Idaho. Hunting dove one morning and my hunting buddy takes a rock pigeon. Being a city boy I always thought of pigeon as cigarette butt eating vermin so I was pretty grossed out when my buddy said it was going to be dinner. I had to admit the bird seemed healthy and the stomach contents were nothing but grain. We took a few more birds and sure enough had pigeon stew for dinner. Very tasty.

People who will eat a hot dog but not a pigeon are confused.

mmm.. pigeon.. very rich taste and it sure as hell isn't farking cheap when you get it in a restaurant.

Mouser 2008-12-07 03:54:49 PM
Two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree sounds like good Christmas eats.
Like anyone can afford French hens these days...
