The lavish coronation extravaganza will awe and inspire the poor unemployed masses.

Did subtard even read the article? There's no mention whatsoever about how much is going to be spent, nor any mention of it being "most expensive ever"

Obama is a man of the people, and it's about time the people get to party on some of this government loot

Considering the head of lettuce I bought at the market this morning was the most expensive lettuce I have ever purchased, I'm not surprised.

Tr0mBoNe [TotalFark] 2008-12-07 12:31:54 PM
Since they're going to spend 99% of their budget on security, I'm not surprised. Bush set the bar at $42 million, including security.

sens [TotalFark] 2008-12-07 12:44:00 PM
Hey dumbass subby, since the price of "stuff" has this funny way of going up each year, and since these ceremonies are four or eight years apart, if every president had the exact same ceremony going back 100 years, would they not all be "the most expensive ever?"

It's not like he's going to be wearing a bedazzled gold lamé tuxedo and hired a 1000-man marching band and commissioned a giant 20-story statue of himself made out of cheddar cheese. Although that would be pretty cool.

Tr0mBoNe: Since they're going to spend 99% of their budget on security, I'm not surprised. Bush set the bar at $42 million, including security.

FTFA: President George W. Bush raised $42 million to help finance his second inauguration. Millions more were spent by the government on security.

Not sure if I should go down to DC for the 20th. It'll be an insane zoo, and I'd obviously have a better view on TV, but it'd be something to be there.

This is just step one in jump-starting the economy.

jonasborg: , a precursor to his presidency

FTFA: Unlike in previous years, the inaugural committee said it would not accept contributions from corporations, lobbyists or foreign citizens...

Sounds like a pretty good precursor.

I have a $20 bill that says it isn't. :)

I am HIGHLY concerned about where we're heading. We're already sliding down a slippery slope. Obama has been revered worldwide since his election, and now his own people are creating holidays before he even takes office AND planning the most expensive coronation ever. He is being treated as a savior. If this doesn't reak of the stench of false idolatry, then I don't know what does. We are now indisputably living in the days of Revelation, and the righteous will stand tall through these difficult times as the billions (yes, the billions of world. not just millions) blindly follow this man down his path of false promises as they revoke God and Jesus Christ for him. One day (I predict it should be not long after he solidifies his power with his reelection, so just over 4 years from now, most likely just before the day which we traditionally mark the birth of Christ) that we will see the final battle between us and them, and only those who have stood with the forces of Good will be saved. Consider yourself warned.

Jamespoon: AND planning the most expensive coronation ever

I know you're trolling. Or at least, I hope you're trolling. In any case, this is a completely misleading lie.

First, this Inauguration is expecting the highest turn out ever. That means the government needs to provide facilities to support the expected crowds. Providing those facilities, from bathrooms, to cordons, to security, requires money. The more people you have, the more money it's going to cost. Couple that with the fact that there's been 8 years of inflation since we installed a new President, it's more expensive.

Don't worry! Although your boring suburban life has been uneventful thus far, and your boss is a douche, your wife is a harpy, your kids are good-for-nothing, and the acquisition of material things has left you dead inside, I'm sure God will come down any day now and reveal that YOUR life has cosmic importance.

Because after all, theology is just like the comic books!

/For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, so that 2000 years later he would come back and kill 6 billion unbelievers

Meh. The whole obscene spectacle is really just a reflection of the dangerous concentration of power and influence in the Presidency. When the universe revolves around the Oval Office, like most Americans unfortunately seems to think it does, then it's inevitable that the Inauguration, particularly of a new God-King, will be a ridiculously overblown extravaganza.

"Americans are people who love to indulge, and deep in our hearts want our leaders to be like the king and queen of England - but not too much,"

Was this written by Vampires who haven't left their lair in 50+ years? There hasn't been a King or Queen since then. They must be vampires if they don't remember that a title is capitalised, hence, Senator Obama, Congresswoman Schmidt, and also the Queen of England.

Dupa: Obama is a man of the people, and it's about time the people get to party on some of this government loot

The inauguration, except for security, is funded by private donations. Whether or not it's the most expensive in history depends on how many people donate to it, and how much.

2xhelix: Did subtard even read the article? There's no mention whatsoever about how much is going to be spent, nor any mention of it being "most expensive ever"

THIS. Seriously.

I live in the DC suburbs, and I've been watching this unfold up close. This WILL be the biggest Inauguration in my memory, and the costs for security, crowd management, even cleanup are going to be huge. That's not the same as it being lavish and extravagant. Republicans always get the prize on that one.
